In talking to Mike Dez after he got back from a training camp----he mentioned a great improvement in his speed and strength and other various testing areas---I asked him why our coaches didn't use the same techs to improve---He said he was getting ready for some tests and our coaches were getting ready to play football games--pretty interesting!!!!
Boomer, doesn't that statement make a statement? In the combines they are measuring certain things, specific tests, in order to grade out a player. However, to maximize those (or minimize as the case may be) those measurements, a player is hampering his "football playing" skills.
That could be one reason why so many high draft choices are out of football in a few years.
That is why I was disappointed when the "minor" football leagues such as the USFL and NFL Europe were disbanded. Those leagues gave players who didn't pass muster on the "measurables" a chance to show what they coudl actually do. If not for those leagues NFL fans may never have know who guys such as Sam Mills, Kurt Warner and Jake Delhomme, among others, were.
You dont need an invitation to the combine to enter the NFL. Pro Day is another venue. Some players are training with Coach Whitt and other trainers specifically for speed.
