Eventually, moral victories will start converting into victories for the Ragin’ Cajun basketball team. The Cajuns had a second upset bid in four days pulled from under them in the closing seconds Friday night, this one even more disappointing than the first.
Tuesday, it was a late shot in regulation that helped Oral Roberts survive 54-51. Friday, it was even closer, with Cal State Fullerton getting a basket from guard Bobby Brown with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to hand the Cajuns a 91-89 setback.
The Cajuns are 1-3 and could easily be 3-1.
“I told them after the game there’s no magic words to make them feel any better,” said UL coach Robert Lee. “We just have to stay the course, and if we do we’ll get rewarded.”
That course was definitely off-kilter in Friday’s first 10 minutes, when the talented and athletic Titans ran their way to a 29-11 lead. And did we mention deep? Fullerton got 19 of those first 29 points from players who hadn’t set foot on the floor this year ... a group under NCAA suspension for the first three games for illegal use of book vouchers.

LOUISIANA La. — The University of Louisiana and the University of Tennessee are in similar positions when the teams tip off at 7:05 p.m. today at the Cajundome.
Each team will attempt to eradicate losing streaks.
The contest, the first of three straight home games for ULL this week, is scheduled to be broadcast by FSN.
For Tennessee, ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press poll, a win over the Cajuns would soften the visit to New York’s Madison Square Garden where the Volunteers lost two games in a NIT preseason tournament.
UL (1-3) lost two close games last week, which followed another loss Nov. 14 at Ole Miss.
“I told my team at the start of the season this would not be an easy pre-conference schedule and as it’s turned out, we’ve played some top-quality teams in close games which we could have won,” ULL men’s basketball coach Robert Lee said.

Long-time Ragin' Cajun basketball fans have reason to hold a grudge against Tennessee's Volunteers.
Three times since 1982, the Volunteers have eliminated UL from postseason play, and all three were nail-biters.
UT won an NCAA first-round game 61-57 in Indianapolis in 1982, and three years later UL blew a five-point lead in the final 30 seconds as Tennessee took a 73-72 second-round NIT win in Knoxville.
Even the shorter-memoried remember the 2000 NCAA first-round game in Birmingham, when a phantom foul call on UL's Brett Smith in the closing seconds negated a potential winning Cajun possession and a one-point game became a 63-58 Volunteer win.
The stakes aren't as high tonight, but that doesn't mean the Cajuns won't be desperate for a win when they welcome the Vols at 7:05 p.m. for a first-ever visit to the Cajundome.
