That may be the most common reference but it is not totally uncommon for some states to reference two or more public universities in a certain system as flagships.

Truth be told there is no definitive definition constituting what a "flagship" university is, should, or can be.

Actually if you live in Louisiana it is. You don't have to like it...but it is what it is...The Flagship of this state, and the only tier 1 university in this state. _
You could search the entire country and you would not find a bigger bunch of losers than are found at ULM. Their fan base, all 500 of them, is pitiful. They all suck up to LSU but to no avail. LSU people still think the same thing of ULM as the rest of the people in this state do. ULM is ahead of only Grambling as the worst school in the U of L system and everyone knows it.

And... by the way, several degrees from UL are in fact superior to such a degree from LSU. In the area that LSU has no competition... medical and law... which do you think the average person would more respect... such a degree from the above mentioned schools or... haha... LSU. Be real. _
You need to be real, LSU is superior to UL in just about every area, business, sciences, engineering, humanities.

You need to quit listening to Cajunfun and wake up. Leave the South and UL is nonexistent, at LSU is known as a sports school.

AAAAHHH. I didn't realize it until now. Welcome aboard Chancellor Wharton.

I guess you'll be lecturing us about mission creep next.

And yet, he's not even a Hoax fan. He's a techie (well, in degree only, truth in fact, he's a stater). He deliberately chose his screen name to try to get under our skin.

Perhaps if we had a basketball team (men's or women's) worth talking about this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion right now!

Get ready for a real p*ssing contest if this ever happens:

    Higher ed consolidation wins support

LSU and Southern University could lose their management boards in the coming years, based on recommendations approved Monday and Tuesday by a state higher education streamlining commission.

Gov. Bobby Jindal said Tuesday he is in favor of consolidating into single higher education management board overseeing the state’s 14 public universities, nine community colleges and 40 technical college campuses.

“I’m certainly in favor of a single board,” Jindal said in a phone interview Tuesday after another meeting of the Louisiana Postsecondary Education Review Commission.

Jindal said one board offers better efficiency and coordination.

This article is full of fail.

    Consider the following:

However, the commission, which will finish its deliberations next month, has refused to vote on the most controversial measures, such as college closures and mergers to save funds. A pending proposal to merge the University of New Orleans with Southern University at New Orleans, for instance, and others were never taken up for consideration.

Abject failure by the "Mission Creep" Commission to tackle the HUGE elephant in the room. There's no need for a chicken in every pot and a university in every city.

The most heated debate Tuesday focused on whether LSU — or LSU and other research universities — should keep its own management board separate from other universities.

yet another problem from State U.'s perspective, how does State keep its influence from being watered down once you add UL and Tech to the board?

“You have a chance to make Louisiana State University into a world-class research university,” commission member David Longanecker, of Colorado, said, arguing that will not happen if LSU is lumped into the same management system as every other university.

AND THERE IT IS-- We're all lumps according to this ""Mission Creep Comission" Member

“You have one research university; you don’t have five,” said Longanecker, who is the president of the Western Interstate Commission of Higher Education.

Apparently someone forgot how to count...

Southern, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana Tech University and the University of New Orleans also are technically listed as research universities.

I love the use of the word "technically" here as if its in name only.

No, there's nothing going on at the LITE Center or the Wetlands Research Center or....

In summary, friends, be afraid. BE VERY AFRAID. This ain't over yet.
