My Grandpa was the Captain of LSU in 1902. I have a book that has an article about the year. It shows their having beaten SLI in that year by a score of 42-0 to start the year. They won all their games except Vandy. His grandson will be pulling big time for the Cajuns in 2002. 100 years and it flys by.

    FOOTBALL AT THE UNIVERSITY

Prof. Harris, manager of the athletic association of the State University states that all of the dates for this session’s engagements have been arranged. Early in the session there was some correspondence with Tulane, looking to contests with that college, but details could not be arranged mutually satisfactory and the whole subject was dropped. Possibly it is best that the(r)e should be no contests between L.S.U. and Tulane. Regretful as it may be, the fact remains that the cordial fraternal feeling that should exist between these two great State colleges is wanting. They have had many spats, some of them very disagreeable, all of them profitless. It would be a bootless task to undertake to locate the blame. The fact remains that, from present outlook, there will be no athletic contests on the gridiron, between them, this session.

The State University played the (University of Louisiana) on Friday with a score of 42-0 in favor of the former. They play the University of Texas . . .

    L.S.U. vs. INSTITUTE

A Large Crowd Witness a Game of Football on Institute Campus

The football team of the Louisiana State University, who were on their way to Austin to play the Texas University, stopped here last Thursday and gave the Institute boys a game of the great college sport. Of course the game could result only one way. The L.S.U. team scored 42 and completely shut out the Institute. Considering the superiority of the visiting eleven, the game was very interesting, several of the Institute boys showing decided skill and making some really clever plays.

Quite a large crowd of people witnessed the game and seemed to enjoy it.

Before the game the L.S.U. boys were treated to a lunch by the young ladies of the Miss Mayfield's cooking class. At night they were given a reception in the parlors of the dormitory.

    First intercollegiate game.

If you say first collegiate game you would also have to say they played their first pro game two games later, when they played the New Orleans Athletic Club.

In the fledgling day of the game of football, opponents were hard to come by . . . in 1902 UL played a semi-pro team, an intercollegiate game, and a high school team.

I get a kick out of the writing style back then. I find it extremely interesting.
