Hudspeth deals with rumors
No wonder UL head coach Mark Hudspeth's name keeps popping up in places. It did earlier this season, when Arizona — the Ragin' Cajuns' opponent Saturday — fired coach Mike Stoops after a 1-5 start. And it is again lately, especially on fan ...
Re: Hudspeth deals with rumors
Message boards may be Buckley's source, but scapegoat aside (at least in this case) the rumor mill was spun on a Mississippi radio station.

Re: Hudspeth deals with rumors
All of this talk will forever be coach speak. We should expect nothing different. I wish the media wouldn't ask the question because at some point you're forcing the coach to lie. Make no mistake: if he's pushed on it and he is in fact looking at other offers, he will lie about it! Just as any of us would!
It's a big pet peeve of mine when fans get upset with a coach for "deceiving the media" about a coaching job before eventually accepting that opening.
Re: Hudspeth deals with rumors
I agree.... S'not what I intended when I posted.
It shouldn't be an article in our paper. He shouldn't be pushed on the topic.

Wasn't directed at you at all.
As I'm sure you know, we've never had to deal with the pain of losing a football coach to another school! Uncharted territory...
Re: Hudspeth deals with rumors
Indeed.. coach speak isn't so much a sports cliche as it is a part of sports. They have certain things they have to say even if they are lying... (Sup Saban?)
That said IF Hud wants the Ole Miss job and gets it good for him. We will move on. If he wants the Southern Miss job and gets it.. good for him.. we move on.
Word is that Hud is getting a raise and at some point you have to feel like its not just about the money. How much better is the Southern Miss job? Meh... While Ole Miss is the SEC.. its he 13 best job out of 14. Its clear that 7-4 and 8-5 isn't good enough for them. Can you do better? Maybe. If you don't.. enjoy your four years there.
Here in Lafayette 7-5 and 8-4 is perfect. Can you do better? Absolutely. Look at the level of players that are coming in. Imagine in two or three years... Hud knows better than I do what his best choice is... See you guys in New Orleans!!!!

Our admin just needs to make sure we do not "USL" this deal. They need to live up to their promises made to him when he hired on. And if there are any of the "old guard" still in place spouting the tired old "thats not how we do it around here" or cautioning theat we "have to tread lightly so as not to upset supporters of other schools in the state" then they need to be shown the door. We have a chance at a new day here at UL. Hud has shown us a glimpse of what can be, anyone who is not on board with the new vision and the new way of doing things needs to turn in their retirement papers. If they want to live in the past let them go get a job at BBU, slu, nicholls, etc.

There is nothing more one could add here. Perfection.

If Hud stays for a few years, I'll tell you exactly where we are heading.
The year is 2015.
It is a Thursday night.
The Cajuns are having a game.
It is on TV.
It is sold out....., and Herbstriet is in the booth going on and on at how impressed he is with our facilities and the job Mark Hudspeth has done building the UL program into a Top-25 program.
Re: Hudspeth deals with rumors
Our secret weapon is our town and university not Hud. Hud to his credit has been the first coach to recognize it.

Great post. Its a new day.. a new admin and a new coaching staff.... Great things can be accomplished if we all pull on the rope (to use that often stated phrase).... We need to somehow reward Hud. Now before some of the old apologists jump on me, tear up his contract and give the man a raise. No I don't know how all of that works but other schools do it and the math works... He has increased revenue by at least $12 million over last year (15k increase per game times $16 per ticket times 5 games)... It should not be hard to justify another $100k per year or so

That would be 1.2 mil not 12 mil. 100K isn't keeping him. When he leaves it will be for a job that probably pays three to four times what he is making right now.

Uh, I believe that would be 1.2 million, not 12 million. I do not think the increased attendence was more than 12,000 per game either, because I think we averaged about 17K last year. Having said that, I expect donations have increased a lot.

Both were Delta State grads, too.

Let's face facts, the Southern Miss job is a much, much better job than UL right now. They have been doing it the right way for years while we have been floundering. They pay Fedora $850K per year, and have better facilities and is in Mississippi, I am much more worried about HUD to USM than I am Ole Miss. You better believe that HUD is #1 on their list if Fedora was ever to leave.
