Louisiana's Push for Tier One status
Can someone explain how LA Tech is Tier 1 and we are not? I seem to remember a comparison of our universities and UL was way ahead of Tech in all or most major categories and we dwarfed them in research and endowment. I don't think they offer more PhDs than we do. So, how is this possible? What is UL doing to match them at Tier 1? Can some post the comparison?
Is it really that great to be a Tier I University?
The author of this article argues that universities may be chasing the wrong goals to become a Tier I University by increasing costs without corresponding improvements in knowledge and learning.
Could Tier I be just a marketing campaign for universities to raise more funds?
Interesting discussion.

Same argument can be made for building a major college athletic program. You are competing for attention and support so that your university can grow. If you don't impress the impressionable, someone else will. I'm sure there are intermediate steps that don't directly translate to a better classroom experience, but in the long run more money creates more opportunities that will make a real difference.

Re: Is it really that great to be a Tier I University?
This article is completely accurate. It is impossible to numerically "rank" a University and believe that system to be accurate. Yet fans and Conferences pay attention to the rankings published by a bankrupt weekly that is no longer in print. USN&WR procedures and measures are highly subjective. The classification or "rating" procedures used by Carnegie are the most accurate. But the game is played by everyone so we must also play.

And how about Tulane sending in amended data to off set the lies about their MBA program---they literally just sent in bogus data!!! Or how about UL reporting the wrong amount of our endowment by about 100 million dollars!!!

I believe that UL sent in its total annual research dollars instead of Foundation dollars....shortchanged ourselves about 85 million...paging Moe, Larry and Curly....again

Also, pay particular attention to #4...it amounts to around 25% of your score that is used to rank a University....
Tier 1 Status and Doctoral 1 Status Updates/Requirements?
Anyone, up on the status of either, Tier 1 and/or Doctoral 1 for UL? I know that we were a several years behind La Tech in the implementation of certain admissions criteria and they are now Tier 1, when does Louisiana become Tier 1. Also, Doctoral 1 status is something else UL has been working on for some time now, where do we stand?
Being Tier 1 Doctoral 1 would help Louisiana get into another conference sooner rather than later, what is the latest? As far as University Presidents are concerned they look for other university with like or similar scholastic status, thus the need for Tier 1 and Doctoral 1 status!

Re: Tier 1 Status and Doctoral 1 Status Updates/Requirements?
I'm have no idea. I do know there is a huge effort to upgrade all masters programs. Not sure how that helps with regards to your question. Just thought I'd add that tidbit.

That's awesome! I had heard that we were just a handful of Doctoral degrees each year away from obtaining Doctoral I status, and maybe a year or so from Tier 1 status. I at least am hoping that achieving these and any other academic status as a University will at the very least get the University of Louisiana in the early conversations among other university presidents when discussing conference realignment.
Re: Tier 1 Status and Doctoral 1 Status Updates/Requirements?
Tier 1 status according to who?
The reason I ask is because as far as I can tell there are at least 4 institutions that declare a school to be "Tier 1," and the only one we have a reasonable shot at is the US News and World Report one. And from what I understand most experts and college presidents think USN&WR's methodology is complete bull****. Many colleges refuse to even participate in it. So at the end of the day I don't know how much it helps us with college presidents.
