PONTIAC MODEL: In today's first game, 14th-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette plays No. 3 seed North Carolina State, with the winner advancing to Sunday's game against the winner of the Western Michigan-Vanderbilt game. Lafayette is coached by 1968 Pontiac Central grad Jesse Evans.
"I played there right before Campy Russell," said Evans, who also played at Eastern Michigan. "I played with Campy's brother Frank. Let's say I passed to Frank. Pontiac had a lot of legends, but Campy was the best."
Evans is something of a legend in Louisiana, or at least in Lafayette. In his seventh season, Evans has a 132-80 record and has moved into second place in the Sun Belt Conference coaching record book with 70 league wins. The Ragin' Cajuns have 20 wins in each of the last three seasons, and this is their second NCAA appearance under Evans.

The rest of the story

HOME COOKING: Louisiana-Lafayette junior guard Orien Greene, a heralded player out of Gainesville who transferred from the University of Florida, said his mother planned to cook dinner for his teammates on Thursday.
"I don't know what she's going to do," he said earlier in the day. "Maybe pork chops and rice and gravy and some Kool-Aid."

The rest of the story

Difference in diagnosis: Injured North Carolina State guard Scooter Sherrill sounded like someone who expects to play in today's opener against Louisiana-Lafayette in Orlando, Fla. His coach, Herb Sendek, sounded just the opposite.
"Scooter has been very optimistic," Sendek said Thursday, "but he isn't anywhere near where he left off."
Technically, Sherrill, who suffered a torn muscle in his left ankle on Feb. 29, has been cleared to play, Sendek said. But even Sherrill admits his ankle is no better than 80 percent healthy.
"There's a lot of pain," he said. "There's no denying that."
Sherrill ran in five-on-five drills for about 15 minutes Wednesday, the first full-speed work he's done since the injury. However, his foot was extremely sore Thursday and, essentially, sidelined him again.
He said he believes he can play today, but the decision isn't his to make. "I can say whatever, but if (Sendek) doesn't see it, he's not going to play me," Sherrill said.

The rest of the story

Louisiana-Lafayette (20-9) kept it interesting, cutting its biggest deficit -- 11 points -- to seven on Antoine Landry's 3-pointer with just under three minutes to go. North Carolina State put the game away by going 6-for-6 from the foul line the rest of the way.
Landry led Louisiana-Lafayette with 16 points, but the Ragin' Cajuns shot just 32.7 percent from the field, including 5-for-22 on 3-point attempts, and were held to their second-lowest point total of the season.
The key was a field-goal drought of nearly 12 minutes that spanned the last 9:15 of the first half and the first 2:40 of the second.

The rest of the story

Raging through the Pages of the Web

On the nuances of March Madness
March Madness' most famous characteristic is the idea of the upset. Annually, a handful of underdog teams pull off shocking wins over the favorites, and this year's tournament has already proved no different. Two No. 1 seeds were knocked out in the second round, along with a number of other top teams.
Underdogs can emerge among the fans as well. Those who know absolutely squat about the teams or about basketball are not only able to enjoy the games as much as those who do, but they can also succeed in the pools because of the tournament's unpredictability. They may pick teams like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette because its nickname is the Ragin' Cajuns. They may pick teams simply because they have players with cool names such as Zakee Wadood of East Tennessee State. Any strategy is valid.

The rest of the story

"Everybody loves the wild iris."
One look explains why. The stunning flower of the species most common locally -- the Louisiana "blue" iris that most people call "purple" -- has gracefully drooping petals painted with a deep, blue/purple, giving way to a bright lane of yellow near the stem. The colors would stand out anywhere, but are especially eye-catching in the evergreen of local wetlands.
The effect was not meant to attract human tourists.
"The yellow stripe acts as a landing strip to attract (pollinators)," said Susan Mopper, Ph.D., a University of Louisiana-Lafayette professor and researcher specializing in the wild iris.

The rest of the story

BRIDGE CITY - Even when she was a freshman, everyone just kinda knew that Jessica Lemoine was going to be something special, especially the ones that follow the Bridge City Lady Cardinals softball program.
A little less than a year from now the community of Lafayette, La. will likely have that same feeling as the senior catcher for the Lady Cardinals will be honing her talents at the University of Louisiana for the Lady Ragin' Cajuns. . .
The backstop is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to play for one of the best softball programs in the NCAA next season. Former Southeast Texas standouts - Vidor's Heather Bobbitt and Kirbyville's Holly Tankersly - are both participating at the school already as freshmen this year. Tankersly led Kirbyville to the 3A state crown last year while Bobbitt helped Vidor reach the 4A state semifinals.
"I can't wait to August," said Lemoine. "They went to the College World Series last year and they're ranked No. 7 in the country in the ESPN poll. I've played with five of the girls during the summer and I know them all by name basis. It's a great atmosphere there and I'm so looking forward to the next level. Bears first round pick Tommie Harris won't meet most of his new teammates until this weekend's minicamp, he already has been welcomed into the Bears' family by Tillman, a fellow Texan. "Peanut" was a one-man welcome wagon on draft day.
"I know Peanut," Harris said. "We played against each other in high school. My high school always dominated his. Peanut is a great guy. He came over to the house and fit right in with the family. When he first saw me, he gave me a hug.
"We never talked like that before, but he just greeted me and called me 'teammate' and all the other stuff. So I'm looking forward to being out there with him on the field, going to battle with him.
"Peanut lit up my whole house with his personality. He stayed for hours just talking to everybody and having everybody laugh, so my mom feels real comfortable about him."
Thanks to Tillman's enthusiasm and energy, Harris is eagerly awaiting the challenge of contributing to a new team and fitting into a new environment.
"Charles told me it's a great city," Harris said. "He said it loves football. He told me that everybody I meet, just say, 'Beat the Packers,' and they're supposed to go wild or something. So I found a way to greet people." LINK

Keary Colbert, the team's second-round pick, (WR) could contribute more as a rookie than Gamble. Bill Alvaro said he was first noticed by pro scouts playing in an American Legion game as a junior. The pro scouts came to see Will Vespe. They left liking the former Gloucester Catholic ace, but they also left liking Alvaro, too. "This is great for our kids," Alvaro said. "You don't have to be the kid being looked at to be seen."

The rest of the story<?center>

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Center Treynell Clavelle and guard Amber Long will be transferred from LSU, coach Pokey Chatman announced Thursday.
Clavelle averaged 3.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10 minutes per game. She scored a career-high 11 points in LSU's victory over No. 1 seed Texas in the NCAA regional semifinal and contributed a career-best nine rebounds in the SEC tournament second-round victory over Ole Miss.
"It is difficult to part ways with a player the caliber of Treynell," Chatman said. "She made significant contributions when called upon. Her performance in the Sweet 16 against Texas comes to mind. Anytime you have someone that can score 11 points off the bench on that stage, you hate to lose them."

The rest of the story

Taylor's defensive playbook wasn't dictionary-thick at Lafayette. He played cornerback for one season opposite Charles Tillman, who, like Taylor, was a 2003 draft pick. With Taylor and Tillman -- the Bears' second-round selection -- on the corners, Lafayette kept it simple.
"The playbook was probably a couple of pages," Taylor said. "We played a couple of half-field (coverages), a little Cover 2.
