MBB Podcast Notes

Craig and I decided not to record a podcast this week as there was little pertinent analysis to provide. Shown below are comments I would make in regards to last week's game and tomorrow's contest

Ark State Game Notes
1) Nelson dominated game from start to finish. Cajuns could not stop him driving to rim, keep him off the glass, or attack the basket without him protecting it. He had 21 rebounds to Cajuns 24 overall. Also, 30 pts/2 blocks
2) Kobe Julien had poor game, perhaps due to nerves. His tough night had little impact on out come.
3) Officials lost control of game. Coach Z felt we were disrespected and was tossed. Mo had decent offensive game for us.

USA Game
1) Cajuns could not solve Jags zone. Hit a few threes but after being down 16 to 2, game never in doubt
2) Turned it over a few times trying to get it in middle of zone. Tried to get it too close to basket. Needed to get ball near free throw line more frequently. White scored in that scenario.
3) Did OK stopping 3’s but poor at defending rim. Jags hit
18 of 27 2 point shots. Ormiston and Dunning had good games for Jags as predicted

ULM Game
Contest is tomorrow night at 7:30. A victory allows Cajuns to play ODU Wednesday night at 7:30. Malik Willis, (No. 13) is the top inside guy and Tyrese Watson (No. 10) is their best guard. They have a limited bench and rarely play more than 7 guys. Their advantage against the Cajuns the first 2 games was their inside play. Rebounding may be key to game. Cajuns 3 guard offense with Thomas, Wright, and Garnett starting is something which may be new for the Warhawks to see.

Hopefully the season continues after tomorrow night. We all recognize the tough task beyond that. We also recognize the focus is moving to speculation on who our new head coach will be. In the event, we hire an assistant from a major program, an announcement could occur withing days after our season ends.

Curious who you think wins this tournament. Know there isn’t a clear favorite, but have to believe USA and JMU have the advantage w/ the extra bye.

I still think ASU is the “best” team, but the whole league’s inconsistency seems to make it a coin flip.

I pick Troy simply because when I look at the contenders they have been slightly better on the road

I have heard some names but I don't know how accurate the information is. In deference to the process and Dr. Maggard, I will not share them. Others can provide any information they have in this regard.

I am taking Arkansas State. I think they can handle three games vs the two games the two top seeds have. I think the Red Wolves have the best team therefore they are my choice.

Only 4 SBC teams had winning records on the road. South Alabama, Arkansas State, Troy, and…your Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

I think Troy or JMU will win. After that Arkansas state.

Major kudos to y'all sticking with MBB talk throughout this season.

Due to circumstances, pulling for Troy. JMU is one of two SBC programs that have Rustonian type fan bases. Arkansas State, Kobi is finishing his career as a Dead Wolf. They spent good money getting players, hope they crash and burn.

Kobe finished last season in a slump here. Similar to what happened to him this year. Red Wolves may have overspent in getting him to Jonesboro. Note, Arkansas State coach is listed as a candidate for the Florida State job.

20 of 32 conferences last year were irrelevant. From what I recall, only 12 leagues received more than 1 bid. I may be off by one or two but I am close with that stat. That is also typical. Some years there are 10 or less leagues that get more than 1 bid. Last year our tournament champion won a game in the NCAA tournament. Few one bid league teams had their champion do that. I agree the league is down overall this year. That is somewhat due to several of the top players from last year moving on due to portal money. Overall however, the league is not nearly as bad as some people who don't realize there are over 30 D1 conferences.

I think the disappointing part is, among the FBS conferences, the Sun Belt and MAC are at the bottom of the pack in basketball. And it’s not even close.

Sun Belt basketball has to get better if it wants to be taken seriously as a league. League has said it has to be fixed. At least they recognize it’s a problem.

Just my opinion, but Kobe seems to have lost a step. Even with his 7 year adult body size compared to some of the freshmen we were playing against him, it seemed like he was getting beat often. I hate to see it happen to him—I don’t think he’s a bad guy. At the end of the day, it was probably a financial decision for him, as this was his last chance to make a little cash playing basketball. I just hope he was at least able to earn a few degrees during his time in school.

As for that Arkansas State coach, he’s someone I would never want associated with our program. He has that Will Wade demeanor, constantly complaining to the refs at every timeout. Even while the game was going on he was in the refs ear, he was continuously cursing at his players and at one point even told the refs that he was going to have his players go in hard against ours when a foul wasn’t called in his favor. This happened a little while later in the game. The guy is a pure joke, and that is not someone I would ever want around our program.

Kobi needs to come to terms he’s in the 99+% the NCAA speaks about every year.

Three ACL surgeries have taken a toll on the young man. I wish him the best and he uses that UL degree for his betterment.

AFA the SBC being committed to MBB, thought that was the main reason Gill was hired.
