Interesting talk with Tech insider
Met an old HS buddy last night who is in the La Tech sports HOF, and plugged into the school. He told me there are discussions at the top of the university about giving up sports because they do not see a path to any kind of success with the economics of college sports today.
Obviously, they could drop out of the FBS and D1 category and still keep sports, which he said is also being discussed. He gave it a less than 50% chance that they will be D1 in 5-10 years.

The fact those discussions are even happening at a Div 1 school says a lot about the status of collegiate athletics.

I couldn’t agree more.

…….Please some from our “herd” (pun intended) join in…..seems it has been discussed and even acted upon about the Lake Charles area (Texas line to Crowley and the Gulf to DeRidder) having unreal growth with the liquid Natural gas construction and future use……maybe thought to be in the top 10 functions in the world…… how on the money is this and what are the future effects on Louisiana athletics and McNeese? No clue about this but would love to know!

2 years in a row a good # of returning LTURd starters portaled out ....if all you do is develop players for P4 without ability to retain at minimum a core base. Game over..
We lost 2 to P4 last year.....both started season as bench warmers at UH. ZC started last 6 games & finished season with 7 passing TDs against 14 turnovers. 11 Interceptions and 3 lost fumbles. UH will be shopping bigly for a starting portal QB.
To compare.....Ben and Chandler combined over all 12 games, 24 TDs with 6 Int with just 1 lost fumble

Tech has multiple hurdles. They have one whale donor. He’s getting old, his spawn may not feel the same towards Tech over the years. And of course, I’m sure Tech is like UL, they will fish the pond dry before working to get new donors.
And they’re in Ruston. Ruston is getting a Buc-ee’s. I use to joke Ruston was the best place on I20 between Jackson and Shreveport to make a “pit stop”. Now it Will certainly be true. Meanwhile,
Monroe is supposedly getting a META data center. And ULM thanks the Lord they sold their soul to UL to get in the SBC, and not fighting for relevance in the league where program death could come in many forms.

What exactly does he mean by success? As much as we hate to admit it, for G5 schools success is not defined by how you compete nationally. It’s about how you compete with your peers. La Tech doesn’t have to come up with a $20,000,000 NIL budget to compete with SEC schools for NIL deals. They just have to have enough to compete with schools like us, ULM, and their (mostly crappy) conference mates. They aren’t so far behind these peer schools that they can’t compete and find success.
With that said, some of this panic may be driven by the $250 million in budget cuts coming to Louisiana higher ed this year. And with the recent tax reform legislation, there will probably be more next year.
A lot of state universities are going to suffer.

Times like that, those who moan about UL only using 2% instead of 3% of the budget for athletics, the rest of the ULS programs use the 3%. They’ll have to cut where UL might be ok.

We were better off this year at QB with Ben and Chandler. Zeon would be nice to have next year but if Howard comes, that may be moot.
Gant only had 7 tackles for UH this year. I’m not sure if he was hurt. He could have helped our defense.

This. Cajun quarterbacks were light years better than the Cougars this year. Chriss has unbelievable talent but is brutal at reading defenses. Fields ability to throw receivers open is underrated. He really throws a beautiful ball. Congratulations to Ben and Chandler and bring home a conference ring and a bowl game victory.

According to him, they are non-existent in the NIL space, well below $1M and have multiple facility needs that they don't have the funds for or the donors to step up. In addition, each school will need to come up with $$$$ for the NCAA settlement next year and they haven't a clue how they are going to come up with it.
He has played and lived in Ruston for 40+ years and been an ardent donor and supporter. The situation is very bleak, according to him.
Re: Interesting talk with Tech insider
Well, Tech is keeping their coach, for amongst other reasons, fiduciary responsibility. AKA can’t afford to buy him out.
http://www.latechbbb.com/forum/showt...mbie-staying!&
The NCAA settlement will rear its head here eventually, that can HAS to be kicked down the road until stadium is done if possible. Just another way the A4 will cripple the rest of FBS. Can’t afford to pay it, yet can’t afford to leave FBS.
And found this on SBC board. Last sentence, it’s not just aUL observation. The fallout of Tommy Mac’s pie hole blunder.

I think we should rescue WKU. Liberty can run roughshod over a bunch of FCS and get no credit, and we would have an insanely strong G5 conference.
WKU in the West
East Carolina in the East
We run this G5 biatch
The only desirable schools left are ECU and Memphis. No to the rest. UAB and Tulane are about to slide back to the norm as losing programs for the next 20 years. LT is dead...might as well be FCS now.

Would love for the Turds to drop athletics and focus on being the Harvard of South Arkansas, but I know it would never happen. It would ruin them. They are in a shrinking part of the state and haven't had real growth in decades. Even dropping out of D1 and there would be no real reason for kids in South Louisiana to spend 4/5 years of their lives up there when there are community colleges cheaper and closer to home. My gut says this is more a cry for more funding; either from their legislators or whatever alumni they have left.
If this state was really serious about fixing Higher Ed then they need to merge LaTech with Monroe (LaT@M). The buildings that aren't crumbling should be transferred to Grambling. The faculty and students would be split mostly between Northwestern and Monroe with rest going to one of System schools.

I don't know if those NIL numbers are true. I don't know how accurate nil-ncaa.org is, but they claim Tech has about $900k in NIL funding. That puts them at the top of C-USA, and about mid pack in the Sun Belt. For comparison, we have $1.3 million, and ULM has $300k.
Also from nil-ncaa.org, they estimate that the NCAA settlement will have a $4.1 million impact on Tech's budget. That's a significant amount of money to have to deal with, but not "shut the program down" significant. And every G5 school will be dealing with this as well. They won't fall behind because every G5 school will be falling with them.
Don't get me wrong. He would know Tech's finances better than me, and I'm not doubting that things look dire up in Ruston. But things are going to look pretty damn dire for everyone.

Agreed, G5’s are all going to be in a bind. He is just very pessimistic that they can find the donor base to survive, even CUSA.
The truth is probably some where in between his pessimism and they will be as fine as peer schools. Unlike Lafayette, Ruston ain’t growing.

I liked the one where one whale put up 750k to get rid of the coach and nobody put up the rest. Looks like going to the well too many times is coming home to roost.
And the McNeese/NWST remark is so true.
Also, speaking of true, all the things people say bad about Tech and their holier than thou selves, the bit about leaving the ULS (and the LSUS attempted coup) and having their own system is all you need to know.
I’ll call this now…as the state budget gets chopped, look for LSUS to get jettisoned to the ULS, much like UNO in a budget squeeze years ago. They’ll carve out the medical school part.
