Last week, Travis Bureau soaked up the Florida sun in Panama City Beach during spring break along with UL basketball teammates La'Ryan Gary, Raymone Andrews and Phillip Jones. That fun is now a distant memory. The Ragin' Cajuns went back to work on ...

Fundamentals are the last thing you learn on the playground. But i understand what you're saying.. At any level of organized basketball, fundamentals should be a primary focus.

Agreed! That statement from Coach Marlin tells me one thing. We will be an improved basketball team next year. A little fundamentals goes a long way.

When I said playground basketball, I meant things like biddy basketball. I am not a basketball expert by any means but I used to coach some at the playground we lived in when my kids were younger. Even a novice like I tried to teach moving your feet on defense and how to pass the ball.

Re: Marlin era officially underway
The footwork phrase makes a lot of sense as we saw guys out of position defensively the last couple of years and unable to make up for that causing fouls and we've also seen lots of travels and turnovers on the offensive side of the ball.
-
Re: Marlin era officially underway
I agree but also note that the kids he was working with. LaRyan has not played in over a year and we are not sure of if he will play. Travis and Chris are our big guards and it was my understanding they were working on some 3-4 type moves vs what they have done over the last few years..... Just shoot the "3" baby.
Later in the day I understand that Andrews and Diagle went and worked out with Coach Rich. Each were a little rusty in the begining but from what I heard by the end they were working really well and can't wait to go back today. \
Any word on possible additions to the squad. Signing day is tomorrow and someone posted Coach Marlin was out recruiting last week. Parrot anything on the kids from Florida? They still coming?

Re: Marlin era officially underway
No expected signings on Wednesday for men's basketball. McDougald was released Monday. Reese still coming as of Monday. Still time. Signing period goes until May 19.

Bob Marlin Names First Two Assistants
Quote:
Ragin' Cajuns head men's basketball coach Bob Marlin announced the first two members of his coaching staff on Tuesday, as Nikita Johnson and Darby Rich were named assistant coaches.

Re: Parrott Blog: Marlin announces two assistants
Also, just heard that Marlin will throw out the first pitch for tonight's baseball game against Houston Baptist.
Interesting fact: Marlin was an assistant at Houston Baptist from 1983-89.

I thought the staff was higher on McDougald? Kept in contact and what not...or was that Reese?

Re: Marlin era officially underway
McDougald requested his release. The school granted it.

They were higher on Macdougald. However, he apparently wanted his release and was granted. Maybe Josh can comment on what the coaches think about Reese because it was considered a possibility that they wouldn't want him.

Re: Marlin era officially underway
Z, I posted earlier today exactly what you posted. McDougald wanted out and got his wish. Happens all the time after a coaching change. He really liked Lee and Dixon and now those guys are gone. Plus, he is still working to get eligible and will likely end up at a prep school.
As for Reese, that situation isn't done yet. It will be Marlin's call because Reese is locked in with the Cajuns unless he is released. I wouldn't be surprised either way with Reese, who is more talented than his sophomore stats would indicate.

Josh, Do you know if practices will be open to the public at any point? Thanks

Re: Marlin era officially underway
If I remember correctly, Marlin told me that practices would be closed. But that doesn't mean there could be an open practice for the public at some point.
I'm very interested to see whether the program holds a Midnight Madness practice this year. That would likely depend on the timing given that the Cajundome would need to be available. There's no doubt that there would be plenty of buzz.

In the event the Dome is not availabe when fall basketball practice begins, they should hold some type of event at Earl K. Long. It could be a joint function with the women's team. Not as nice as the Dome but better than no season beginning celebration at all. Actually Saturday morning scrimmages in October and November were often well attended at Blackham Coliseum by the die hard fans. No reason not to have those at Earl K. Long.

While I was a student here Midnight Madness was held at Blackham and it was always well attended and loud. featured both the men and women.

I agree. But, it ought to be worked out with the Cajundome... for both teams. It's a marketing thing for UL and with it being the introduction to the Marlin era. I think the Cajundome is the place.

Re: Marlin era officially underway
I'd go to Midnight Madness.
