Basketball Season’s on deck
I know that we’re in the home stretch in football. Just wondering from ‘people in the know’ what can we expect this season. Starting lineup, players to watch, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Chancellor White
Chancellor White won’t be available till sometime in January if at all this year.
I won’t get too deep into it cause I don’t want to steal from Mike’s thunder, but this will be a very different team from last year. They will be very guard heavy and play more up tempo. I think we are gonna give up some points but also have the potential to score a whole lot of points.

I don't think he plays this year. Ratliff I think will be the breakout player that is the under the radar right now

Small definitely… Shooters gotta really be on to score lots of points… We lost around 40 points and 20 rebs in the paint from last year … NOV 6, we gonna have a good idea of what’s to come…

Coach Marlin has spoken about Chancellor White in recent radio interviews with Kevin Foote and Jay Walker. He also spoke about it in his podcast interview with Jay. Therefore there is nothing confidential about this at this time. Chancellor suffered a knee injury in the late spring. In early June he underwent successful surgery. His rehab has gone very well and he is ahead of the recovery schedule. He could possibly play when conference play begins. However, at this point trainers are recommending he sit out the entire season with a medical redshirt. He would have 3 years remaining to play starting next season if that were the route followed. Come late December, trainers/doctors may clear him to play if his rehab continues to go well. At that point a decision will have to be made on whether to play him this season or go the redshirt route. This is not football. You play one minute in a regular game and you have used your eligibility for that season.

The guy wasn't ready last year when they burned the redshirt. He's not ready for D1 basketball, wise move would be to sit out whole year. London Fields is ready right now to play big minutes for us.

I agree that White is likely to sit out the season. The reason he played last season was due to Kobe Julien not being ready to play until conference play began. When cleared to play this season, he can benefit from extra practice time like all players.

There is also an exhibition game at the Dome on Monday Oct. 30 vs UT-Tyler. That is a week from yesterday. Not sure how much you will be able to gain from that contest. I think the major reason for this game is that we have a tough opening night opponent on Nov. 6 in Youngstown State. I imagine the staff wanted a dress rehearsal prior to the regular season kicking off.

Did we (or will we) have any of those super secret scrimmages this year?

There was one on Sunday.
By the way UT Tyler lost to Arkansas in an exhibition 92-39.

Geezus, I was really looking forward to seeing the step White would take from freshman year to sophomore year.
In looking at this roster we are vertically challenged to say the least.

As Mullet said there was a "secret" scrimmage on Sunday. Note the word secret is there for a reason. Coach Marlin did mention a couple of things about it in his recent interviews. We may touch on those comments in the upcoming podcast (next Wednesday likely) to the extent we are able to. You will not hear who the opponent was, the score, or game flow however. Honoring an NCAA rule here on what is allowed.

Vinny will never play a meaningful role here.

Re: Basketball Season’s on deck
I, unfortunately, was unable to make it out to the Swamp Slam last night, does anyone have any update on how it went?
I spoke with Coach Marlin Tuesday about the team and about the event and he seemed very excited about it.
Through my involvement with the Krewe Allons, I have had the chance to get to know some of the players, coaches and Coach Marlin and I will say this, whatever you think of the team and the players and the coaches and the results, these are about as good of people as you will ever meet. Coach Marlin loves it here, he has very good expectations for this season. I have spent some time speaking with Coach Hardin, Coach Murphy and our newest assistant Coach Shumpart (he is from NC A&T in Greensboro, he is a great dude, spoke to him for about 30 minutes at the Krewe Allons event) and most of the players, these are great people with only the best intentions for this team and this university.
I never have and I never will cheer against these guys, I hope Coach Marlin and his staff are here for a long time and take us to SBC Championships for years to come and get us to a sweet 16 or beyond.

he is young and never got a chance to prove himself. Marlin recruited him for a reason.

I would never say that. There are tons of players that go to colleges with very low expectations of them, that end up being huge contributors and then there are cases where kids go to schools with high expectations and end up not panning out.
Vinnie is young and will have a chance to work himself into a place on the team. I would never say never with him or anyone on this roster. If he is on the roster, he has a chance to contribute. Will it be hard for him, absolutely, will it be impossible, no way. Just the fact that Chancellor White is probably unavailable for part if not most of this season, has moved him up the food chain already.

Re: Basketball Season’s on deck
Fun evening. Surprised so many students showed up.
Got to talk to some of the new guys. Fine young men. Hope springs eternal that they are also fine bball players. Our new asst coach seems to love it here. Hosanna had class so he wasn’t there. Players told me he is load inside. Hope he can play defense, fill the inside, rebound or at least not foul out.
Hope is my byword for the year.

Yeah, Coach Marlin told me that Coach Shumpart is going to be a great addition to the team and he really wants to be here. He is very excited about this opportunity. Someone and I laughed the other day, because Coach Shumpart is a big dude, I mean a really big dude that when he tells the boys to rebound, I bet the listen.
