The Nickname/Mascot problem ....

What problem? Well, it's like this. Whenever your nickname is a group of people, any mascot representation for those people must be a physical representation of said people, a background figure that further defines the school or who these people are or something that makes no sense whatsoever. sometimes, it is nearly impossible to have a physical representation. These schools have that problem...



Notre Dame Irish
- Irish Terrier(background) until the 60's. Then, it became the Leprechaun(background).

Oklahoma Sooners
- Bulldog(no connection) until the 60's. Then it became a Wagon(background) and Horse.

Tennessee Volunteers
- Coon Hound(background)

Texas A&M Aggies
- Collie(no connection)

Virginia Tech Hokies
- Turkey(no connection)

WKU Hilltoppers
- The Blood Clot(no connection)

Louisiana Cajuns
- Bulldog(no connection). Then Cayenne(background). Then ?


The Bulldog and Cayenne are the only official mascots we've ever had. Whatever we do, we need something that helps us brand ourselves as Louisiana Cajuns. Something SPECIFIC to our state and our people.


To me, the top 3 things that we can do are the Catahoula, the Rougarou or bring back Cayenne. If we want something outside of this, bringing back the Bulldog would be best. At least we know people like it.


Many of us are overthinking this. There is no salvation through mascot. Martin Hall just needs to pick one and start selling the stuffed toys.

Wouldn't be bad. Cajuns love to hunt.

That guy that yells into the microphone during the game. Just give him overalls, white rubber boots, a straw hat, and a cast net around his neck. Call it a day.

Not sure if this has an impact or not, but Vic’s dog has actually been posting on this site for years. His handle is RougaWhite&Blue.

Live dogs are high, high, HIGH maintenance and will never work long term. It works, for police dogs because they are a full time partner of their care takers. They've also been trained to the tune of $12,000 dollars.

The only people that knew cayenne was a cayenne were people from here. Everyone else in the world thought it was a chili pepper which is Mexican.

Our university will never have as a mascot
a) a mascot where the face of the person wearing a Cajun costume is visible and
b) a live mascot. Book it.

The longer this goes on, the more MH kicks the can down the road.

Roxy had 22 months or training when I purchased her at 2 1/2 for $5,000 . . . for purposes of being a mascot, all one would need is about 6 mo obedience training on a lab so the above costs would not be involved . . . labs usually live 10 to 13 years so the changeout would be roughly every 10 years . . . it would work . . .
