With Coutts at Cal, Cajuns adding grad-transfer punter from Cincinnati
Sam Geraci started three years for his hometown Bearcats.

Going live in California and play in the PAC 12 immediately? Sounds like a no brainer, he didn't transfer to grambling. Mich better shot at the NFL where he is and better weather. I bet 90% of the players in the G5 would do that.

Well so much for wanting to get closer to home and not playing football any longer. The truth is he was leaving either way because he didn't want to play at UL this season. Cal worked out for him after spring football. His roommate stuck it out to finish at UL.

No dude, all the stuff about players leaving was all personal. After all, it was Hud that told the media he wanted to get closer to home and wasn't playing football anymore.

Maybe he didn't get to punt enough... just wanted more opportunities to kick...
er... Maybe not. LOL.

A lot of players would take that deal disgruntled or not...pretty good deal.

Sure, but the deal wasn't done when he made his decision to leave the program. He refused to return phone calls from the local media that tried to contact him. Now, I would at least expect something along the lines that he loved his time here in Lafayette, enjoyed the people and his teammates. I interviewed him twice, never had a bad word to say. But not a word, just refused to return request for interviews. This was a kid that said he loved it here in Lafayette during fall practice before the 2016 season.

Looks like the kid from Cincinnati is pretty good. Maybe he hasn't heard about the locker room here yet. Let's get him accepted into grad school before he finds out.

Sucks to lose Coutts who was likely the best player on the team last year (for his position)
But I can see why Hud likes the new guy

Between him and Artigue we will have a jacked set of kickers

Nice sophomore stats. Slipped a bit last year with injuries. "Geraci posted a career-high punting average of 46.3 yards as a sophomore in 2015"

Hopefully we don't need him as much as we needed Coutts last season.

Re: With Coutts at Cal, Cajuns adding grad-transfer punter from Cincinnati
You guys are summing this up nicely. Geraci (and/or another punter candidate challenging for the job) is a good punter. The issue was never that we lost the anchor to our team and we might not find a replacement. It was the circumstance leading up to losing Coutts. We would, otherwise, never be discussing our punter.
Like Cajunrunner mentions... I don't want to have to rely on a punter as often as we did Coutts. The reality of it is... our issues have 99.9% not to do with punting.

Dead on sir! I look forward to watching the new guys compete, but Coutts departure could have been avoided.

I'm thinking we'll need him 7 or 8 times in Game 1, but will only need him an average of twice a game the rest of the season.

Wow. I hope you're right - in the most positive sense. Getting into FG range and/or scoring TDs avoids punting. But turnovers also reduce the need for punting. I hope you mean that our offense is going to be highly effective at moving into the red zone. I'm not sure where you derive the optimism that our offense (and defense) will be phenomenally effective, in every game, after game 1.

No disrespect to SLU, however if we punt several times against the Lions, we will be punting a lot throughout the season. I think people are missing a key point here. We are bringing in a guy who can help us win games. The guy had great stats at Cincinnatti. Hopefully he can duplicate those here. Let's focus on the guys on the team now.

Re: With Coutts at Cal, Cajuns adding grad-transfer punter from Cincinnati
Sticking with special teams, Sterling Miller was a deep snapper that got suspended right after the Trump video last year and doesn't appear on this years roster. He was not visible in the video so when you put 1 and 1 together, you come up with he may have been on the other side of the cell phone camera. Is he gonna be reinstated or will he be the only participant not allowed back on the team?
