Lee must Go !

There was a time when UL Basketball was respected aand feared by all D-1 teams. I remember great games against Marquette, The shootout with Houston when the twin towers were there, the upset over Georgia.
Now, not only has our ability to aim high gone out of the window, we are no longer a threat to any decent Mid-Major team. Nor can we beat an average
D-2 team. And to top it off, we have sunk to the level of losing to D-3 schools. There is no more thought process needed, the time for Lee to be sent packing. We didn't really want him originally. There must have been a reason for that. This program has sunk to new levels, and something must be done this week.. Not next year, this Week.

Most of us have been saying that since last year!

Many of us have been saying that since the day he was hired.

We still can't fire him mid-season. If we fire him I am pretty sure it screws up our APR. We will have to endure this bad season but I have no doubt that his contract will not be renewed.

Next year will be a new start. New coach and I'm guessing a new energy. We will still have a good team next year, but hopefully we will have someone who can coach that good team.

I will continue to go to the games this season to support our team. It's not all the players fault that we have a very poor gameplan.

APR has nothing to do with who the coach is except whoever the coach is he or she must make sure their players attend class and set up road trips that are conducive to studying.

The excuse last year about retaining a coach for APR purposes was like selling beach front property in Arizona.

Wasn't it sad how the media never questioned that load of crap excuse, I haven’t been able to read the DA sports section since.

Can anyone give us the home attendance per game this year?

Yeah, all the DA did was an expansive multi-story look last spring at how the APR issue in men's basketball could have crippled the entire athletic program by falling short of the NCAA's standards this year and what led to the downfall. Tough questions were asked, but you can't control the answers given.

As I stated last spring, it was a lose-lose situation for the school concerning Lee. In my opinion, I felt that best possible move was made to protect all of the university's athletic teams for this upcoming year. Get through this year and then look for another coach.

Wonder how many of you would have felt if the administration had gotten rid of Lee and then every Cajun athletic team was put on probation and softball couldn't go to the College World Series?

Josh you did a fine job of explaining APR earlier this year, especially with the info you had you did a fine job.

The missing link was how a coach (any coach) could magically keep a kid or kids at UL and conversely how an administration could exercise a lack of institutional control so as to let a (unnamed) student or group of students hold a schools overall athletic program hostage.

All the administration would have had to do to retain the students was show them how few of players who left the program (before last year) had ever bounced an NCAA ball again. No one would have left.

Turbine it is a good bet that we would have lost players. That is just normal. Anytime a coach leaves you always tend to lose some players. My point is that saying no one would have left is highly speculative because the statistics prove otherwise. On the other hand I don't think we would have seen a mass exodus either. If I remember correctly though it would not have taken much to put us over the cliff.

I also thought Josh did a great job on the APR issues. It was explained in detail and not everyone has to agree with retaining the coach but at least we all know how the APR game is played.

I would like to see Josh do some follow ups. One - Will the current volleyball issues negatively impact our APR to any significant extent? What is the real impact of schools like Troy & ULM getting a free pass on the APR?

Fair enough, my thinking was with so many finishing their junior year, time was the key factor. With the proper coaching hire they could easily have been talked into staying. Who in their right mind would leave to sit out a year to perhaps play a single year?

Well Jeremy Barr, Emmanuel Adeife, Phillip Jones, David Tanner, Sutton Yanosky did leave, so I don't know. Of course most weren't on scholarship and some never even hit the court.

If you aren't going to go public with what athlete(s) was holding the school hostage then it shouldn't even be brought up as an excuse for retaining the coach.

First, the administration, coaches, players and fans were all given a voice in those stories. My job is to present the facts and allow the public to make up their own mind.

No, keeping Lee hasn't "saved" the athletic program from probation. But the academic structure put in place in recent years has resulted in improved APR scores for men's basketball, and his departure might have resulted in player transfers, which influence APR scores.

The basketball team needed to meet APR standards in both 2008-09 and 2009-10 to move out of the historical-penalty structure.

If Lee and LeBato had been let go, there would have been at least two underclassmen who would have transferred in addition to Barr. I know of one that was good as gone. Losing more than two guys would have resulted in an APR score below 925 and "occasion three" penalties, which would have included a ban from postseason play.

Don't think the NCAA means business? The Centenary men's basketball team and Chattanooga's football team were served with "occasion three" penalties. That means no postseason this year.

If it happens again this year all of athletic teams at Centenary and Chattanooga would face a postseason ban.

No major BCS type school will ever HAVE such a problem; they'll find a way to get themselves declared 'resource limited' and get exempt from the APR penalties. Or, they'd just pay off profs to alter grades... oh wait! one already did that!

Neither is great but I have a point. What's worse?

A) Allowing a student athlete to hold an entire Athletic Department hostage.

B) Getting the players input on what kind of coach they like to play for, what kind of offense are they most comfortable in . .

I am constantly reading people's post that say "we must fire Lee after this performance," "the administration must not care because Lee is still our coach," "I don't understand why lee hasn't been fired," etc., etc. Am I wrongly informed that Lee's status as HC does affect our APR. I'm pretty sure we can't fire him. I have been posting this after every "fire Lee now" post I see yet the same people keep suggesting it. I think we just need to and have to suffer through the season. There are 2 scholarships on the line. Hold off your judgments on the administration's commitment to win until they are able to make a hire after the season. I will be sayin the same thing if we fail to make an impressive hire.

If I am wrong about the APR thing please let me know so I can start calling for Lee's head too.

The Cajuns will be fine once the low score drops off the multi-year average after this season.

Let's see, we had thousands of people in the dome when Orien Greene was there (when we "cheated") and made the NCAA tournament...
At the moment we have 142 people in the dome a night and have a realistic chance of going 5-25 this season.

I'm down with cheating at this point if it puts as##s in the seats, but that just might be me. Let's go out and buy another player, this losing ______ is getting old.

I think it has something to do with the coach being held responsible for the kids maintaining their grades. I know that may sound a bit ridiculous, but I think that's how the NCAA sees it, since we're talking about players on scholarship. To me, it's the player's responsibility, PERIOD. He fails a class, he loses his scholly and he's off the team. Then the scholly's available for someone else. .~..~..~.

The APR's a stupid system. What do all these 4 scenarios have in common?

a) a one year player who leaves for a $30 mil contract
b) a player who transfers and then finishes his degree elsewhere
c) a player who changes his major and supercedes the number of credits needed for graduation, but fails to meet degree requirements
d) a player who graduates in 6 years and a day


....they all have the same impact on a school's APR as failing out.
