Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
Quote:
Louisiana Legislative Act 45 (Senate Bill 843)
Senators: Cecil J. Picard and Armand J. Brinkhaus
Representatives: McDonald, McFerren, Montgomery, and Thompson
D. All uses of the name "University of Louisiana" must be followed by the word "at" and the institution's geographic location. No typographic variations within the name are permitted. The word "at" must be no less than 50% and the geographic location must not exceed 100% nor be less than 80% of the University of Louisiana name. Any institutional use of "University of Louisiana" without the "at" and geographic location is prohibited.
The highly defined cans and cannots of "at" made it the most important aspect of the law.
"No typographic variations" of "at" made hyphens illegal.

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
All that states is if the "word" Louisiana is used all that other crap has to be done a certain way. It doesn't mention the use of letters for abbreviated purposes. Am I missing something here?
So where does it prohibit the school's athletic program from using UL, or La, Or LA, or calling the athletic teams Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns? I would like to see a legislator have the balls to stand in a public forum & say that cajuns don't represent Louisiana. He'd just as soon punch a baby, or a dog. BTW, what is a warhawk anyway? Do they even have such things in Louisiana?

----So T-Bine as you get rid of the hyphens you also add another important part of the law to the mixture---it states that the word "AT" MUST follow Louisiana---Now it is used all the time as Louisiana Lafayette but there is no "University of Louisiana" before it only Louisiana---wonder if this could be interpreted as a problem that at should be used all the time and possibly further the cause to just use Louisiana instead of the at!!! But I think you have hit this in the head!!!

I can only assume their non specific intent but I believe that when they forbid all typographic variations of "at" they had @ in mind. However since they were not specific they also outlawed hyphens as a variation.

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
This is nothing but a Jim Crow style law used to attempt to keep UL down. Why do you guys give this garbage any respect? Let's see them stand up and say that we are not Louisiana. And to the Cajun legislators who supported this. What pieces of trash they were! Selling out to people that have hated Cajuns for so long!

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
This legislation only addresses one thing. The "University of Louisiana" in proper wording on all "official" stationary & letterheads. It in no way dictates that the school cannot refer to their teams as the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. It does not specifically prohibit the use of UL, La, LA, or LU as the monicker to identify with it's athletic programs. It does specifically state that when anyone "from the university or it's support groups refer to themselves, and they specifically refer to "University" they must then use the muckity muck to go with it. It in no way prohibits the use of Louisiana alone in any naming of athletic program team or for branding purposes. That's the way I read it. Someone who sees something else & really sees it & isn't infering it, can tell me I'm wrong. But make certain it specifically states when the school MUST use at Lafayette.

The legacy of Huey Long still runs deep. Understand thy enemy. Remember Tech tried a takeover of LSUS a few years back and got swatted like a fly? If the flagship feels threatened (which doesn’t take much), they will use their minions. Why do you think they’ll never be a non LSU med or law school funded with public money? Bought allegiance.
I understand wanting to take this on legislatively, but us older guys know how it will end. Epic egg on the face of UL.
Continue grass roots, that cannot be stopped.
Has nothing to do with being scared or beholden. It has everything to do with history.
It’s a long fight. Ask Nevada. They still get “Reno”. And never doubt flagships and their insecurities. Like THE Ohio State University.

WW II era fighter aircraft. Flown in various theaters in WW II, but best known as the aircraft flown by the American Volunteer Group in China for the Sino-Japanese War and WW II, That group was later called the "Flying Tigers" and was commanded by Gen. Claire Chennault, a native of Richland or Tensas Parish and a resident of Monroe.

The university doesn't even follow the law academically by not using "at Lafayette". See the official logo. Any wonder people still refer to us as Louisiana Lafayette? Yet, look at the university e-News logo. This is the closest thing to what I am suggesting in the logos we should use exclusively.
We are our own worse enemy regarding our name. No consistency, no real guidance. There is no reason to use LOUISIANA athletically only. We can use it academically as well. Just modify our official logos. We still reflect the required legal use of "at Lafayette", but the emphasis is on LOUISIANA, similar to what TEXAS does with their official log. It would be our most effective, consistent branding. We are now the leading university in the UL System with an R1 Carnegie ranking. Let's now take a bold step in the right direction. I am going to send this to T-Joe with my recommendation.

If you dare go to Tigerdroppings and read that 10+ page thread about us the other day, one of their goofy posters admitted that our Louisiana brand can create "an environment in which the potential for damage to LSU by association is a possibility." These people actually believe that. So, they'll call us a "directional school" while simultaneously claim that our brand can damage them. It's hilarious watching their pretzel twisting and justification for seeing us try to brand ourselves a certain way.

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
No Hyphen in this story...is this the "Legal" way to refer to the university? I can understand UL Lafayette or the full name in the first paragraph, then refered to in the body of the article as Louisiana or UL. Am I wrong to assume that would be correct?

The pertinent part of the law is "All uses of the name "University of Louisiana" must be followed by the word "at" and the institution's geographic location. No typographic variations within the name are permitted."
Leaving it blank between UL and Lafayette is a disqualification.
Better for all second references to just say "Louisiana" be legal and be done with it.

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
It's not posted, but there was a clarification insert in part of the law that I found really humorous and ironical. Especially considering the focus of the law.
In the law they found it cumbersome to repeat "University of Louisiana System."
So embedded in the law that is asking for full name and added location in every utterence it stated (paraphrase) <b><i>All future references to "University of Louisiana System." will referenced as "<u>SYSTEM</u>"</i></b>

Interesting and great catch….. so our problem isnt that in their eyes we have tried to shorten it with use of just one word, it is that they prefer use of the last word.

Nice post.
And the bad part of that is there are actual politicians that think that way. Some of the younger guys amongst us were not around for the name fight, or forget their hiring of the NASA director as their president to get big IT donors to leave UL to LSU.
The name game is being won by the fans and supporters. Stay consistent. ____ing contests just result with everyone smelling like urine.
Our administration walks a tight rope from time to time over it. They can’t just say f it and go all in. But they surely get consistent with canning the extra L and Lafayette with incoming orientation for starters. They should come up with a plan. Oh wait…

Some of our politicians definitely think that way. I know one who did. The second he started to actually lobby with UL on certain issues, he saw the value of our university and guess what? He calls us UL now. That’s part of the problem. These people live in that purple and gold bubble that they can’t see the forest beyond the trees. And they also don’t realize that these ridiculous efforts to thwart progress with other schools not named Louisiana State U actually HURT the state more than help it.

And here is cranial rectalitis on our part…shaping our “Lafayette” future.
It’s simple…use the University of Louisiana at Lafayette all over the OFFICIAL editorial credit page of publications…and don’t use it again.

Re: Here is why the Hyphen is illegal
Wouldnt worry about potential damage to their brand contradict their claim that they dont care about us?

I talked to a guy once who used my name in almost every sentence. That's what this reminds me of, how often can we insert this combo. keep using it before we forget.

Similar to the biblical passage regarding a “log” in one’s own eye. Kind of hard to justify calling someone out when our own publications have a history of zero attempts to get it “right”.
Complicity, non confrontational, or just scared?
Wouldn’t be an issue if the foundation was autonomous. What a novel idea.
