Sprinters Jarvis Murchison and Kade Slaughter both qualified for the 60-meter dash finals and matched each other with a finals time of 6.93 to finish tied for fourth overall. Slaughter also placed second in the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 22.35 seconds.

Louisiana finishes 2nd Lance Veazey named Coach of the Year

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns exceeded expectations at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend, and coach Lance Veazey was named Men’s Coach of the Year in recognition of that performance.
Veazey’s Cajuns were picked to finish fourth in men’s competition in Murfreesboro, Tenn., but they took that two steps higher with a runner-up spot behind four-time champion and host Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders totalled 124 points, wrapping it up with a victorious 3:10.15 time in the concluding 4x400 relay, while the Cajuns scored 112.
“It was a shock to be named coach of the year, it really was,” Veazey said. “Usually, the winning coach always wins that honor.
“I think we got everything we could out of them. We got their best effort in every event. They gave us everything they had, and I couldn’t have asked for more.”
UL’s showing was led by Outstanding Field Performer Lawrence Willis, who won the long jump on Saturday and came back with a triumphant 53-5.75 in capturing the triple jump on Sunday.
Willis led a 1-2-5, 22-point effort in that one event, as teammate Lawrence Leben was second (49-5.75) and Kenny Minton came in fifth with a 47-0.75 best jump.
“Lawrence had a tremendous meet for us,” Veazey said. “We figured those guys would score points for us in the triple. Leben is a hurdler, and we knew he could jump.”
Other keys for the Cajuns were Scott Lowry’s surprising second-place 14-5.25 in the pole vault, trailing only South Alabama’s Brandon Oliver (14-11), as well as Jon-Erik Shanklin’s runner-up, indoor personal-best 47.71 in the 400, beaten only by the 47.25 of MT’s Sean Waller.
“Scott got us big points in the pole vault, a couple more than we expected,” Veazey said. “And Greg Hensgens was fourth in the weight throw. We had 70 points in the field before we got on the track.
“And Walter Whitfield (3rd in the 5,000, 15:22.99) ran well. He had a big meet.”
Also for the Cajun men, Kade Slaughter was fourth in the 200 (21.70), the 4x400 relay was fourth (3:19.13), Leben was fifth in the 55 hurdles (7.50) and sixth-place finishes came from Moses Rugu (mile) and Justin Lemaire (5,000).
Cajun women placed seventh in the meet, won by Middle Tennessee with 114 points, but Natalie Gillis ran second in Sunday’s 5,000 (18:04.37) to go with Saturday’s fourth place in the 3,000.
Gillis also had an indoor personal-best 5:11.41 for fourth in the mile.
“Natalie was kind of wasted after the mile,” Veazey said. “She was in the fast heat of the 5,000, and the girl who won (Jessica Schmidt of North Texas, 17:25.91) was in the slow heat because she didn’t have a previous time in the event. Natalie had a great meet.”
UL got a fifth-place 2:19.96 in the 800 from Stacey Young and sixth places from Jennifer Gautreaux (mile) and Kim Octave (55 hurdles).

“We didn’t really rest through the week, so our performances were about what I expected. I know we can do better this week.
“We’ve heard some good things about their track, so we’re going to go over there and see how we’ll do.”

Cajuns succeed in jumping events

BATON ROUGE — The jumping events were good ones for Louisiana’s men’s track and field squad Saturday at the annual LSU Alumni Gold meet — especially those on the track.
The Cajun men took first places in both of the barrier events, with Lawrence Leben grabbing top honors in the 110-meter hurdles and Walter Whitfield leading a quartet of Cajun place winners in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Whitfield bettered his own season best and Sun Belt Conference best time by nearly 13 seconds in winning the steeplechase with a 9:12.53 time, winning by almost 25 seconds over Asbel Ngetich of Southeastern Louisiana.
His time was just over four seconds off the NCAA Regional qualifying mark (9:08.15).
Teammates Ryan Dupree (10:08.90), D.J. Hebert (10:13.84) and Ben Schexnayder (10:27.68) were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively to give the Cajuns four of the top eight finishers in the event.
Leben bettered his season best with his winning 14.05 time in the 110-meter event, finishing in a dead heat with Houston’s Andrew Carruthers and improving on his NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
The jumps were also good in the field for the men’s squad, with Lawrence Willis finishing second in the triple jump (52-4 1/2) and ninth in the long jump (24-3 1/2), the latter of which was good enough to rank him second in the Sun Belt this season. Leben (47-11) and Kenny Minton (47-6 1/2) were sixth and seventh in the triple jump.

Other men’s finishers included Jon-Erik Shanklin’s fourth in the 400-meter in a season-best 47.48, the second best mark in the Sun Belt this season; Jeremy Hebert’s tie for fourth in the high jump (6-5), Justin Lemaire’s seventh in the 5000-meter (15:39.24) and a fourth and a fifth from the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams respectively (3:12.49, 41.63).
A limited women’s squad was paced by Natalie Gillis, who finished fifth in the 1500-meter with a 4:37.07 time. She holds the Sun Belt’s best mark in the event (4:36.65). Analise Zaunbrecher (4:40.18) was sixth in the same event and Amanda Caffey took a fifth in the javelin (135-6) as the other top women’s performances.
The Cajun squad will next take part in the UL Monroe Invitational on Saturday.

Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana in third-place

Willis, Whitfield propel Cajun men to third-place standing
DENTON, Texas — Lawrence Willis finished off the toughest part of his long jump-triple jump double here Saturday, and he and Walter Whitfield helped boost Louisiana into third place in the men’s division of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Willis captured the men’s long jump with a season-best 25-1 3/4 effort, a mark good enough to qualify him for the NCAA Regional Championships and give him a narrow win over Arkansas-Little Rock’s James Lundberg (24-10 1/2). His jump was the best in the Sun Belt this season and easily topped the NCAA regional qualifying mark of 24-1.
Willis is a prohibitive favorite to claim the triple jump in today’s final day of the league meet, matching the double he posted in the Sun Belt indoor meet in March. He has a best of 55-1 in the triple jump, the nation’s second-best mark and six feet ahead of his nearest conference competitor.
“My coaches helped me get motivated today,” Willis said. “I’ve been working mostly on the triple this year, but I got a lot of support from them and my teammates today.”
Willis wasn’t the only Cajun winner on Saturday, with Walter Whitfield running away in the final lap to claim the 3000-meter steeplechase title with a 9:25.20 time. His mark was over nine seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Roberts of Western Kentucky.
“The whole season led up to this,” Whitfield said. “This has been my goal since I came into the conference. There were a lot of great competitors out there, and that helps you push it.”

The rest of the story<!--
Whitfield entered the meet with the league’s best time in the steeplechase at 9:12.53, and teammate Ben Schexnayder also took an eighth place finish in the event in 10:08.50.
Whitfield’s win continued a strong performance in the distance events by the Cajun men. Late Friday night, UL Lafayette had three finishers in the top eight in the 10,000-meter run led by a third-place finish by Moses Rugu (32:37.83) in the grueling event. Justin Lemaire (32:48.37) was sixth and Chad Campbell (33:46.69) was eighth.
Thanks mostly to those efforts, the Cajuns have 33 points after the first two days of competition. Arkansas State leads the men’s standings with 63 points, just ahead of Western Kentucky’s 57-point total. Trailing the Cajuns are North Texas with 27, UALR and Middle Tennessee with 20, South Alabama with six and New Orleans and Florida International with four each.
The Cajun women are in 10th place entering the final day with only four points, those coming from a fifth-place finish Friday by Desi Chatman in the discus with a season-best 141-4 throw. Her previous best mark this year was 120-6.
Defending champion and meet host North Texas leads the women’s standings with 76 points, but the Mean Green are only one point ahead of New Mexico State with 75. Western Kentucky is third with 41 followed by FIU with 32, Middle Tennessee with 15, UNO with 10, UALR with 8, USA with 7 and ASU with five.
Saturday’s schedule was made up mostly of preliminary running events. Most of the running event finals and the nine remaining field event finals are scheduled for today at North Texas’ Fouts Field, beginning with the women’s pole vault and the men’s hammer at 10 a.m. running events begin at 6 p.m.

Louisiana will send five representatives to LSU's Bernie Moore Track Stadium
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field teams are preparing for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet May 28-29 being held here at LSU's Bernie Moore Track Stadium. UL Lafayette will have five athletes competing in five different events for a berth in the NCAA Championships.
Lawrence Leben and Jarvis Murchison will open the Cajuns competition on Friday. Leben will compete in the 110-meter hurdles at 5:15 p.m. followed by Murchison taking part in the 100-meter dash at 6:15 p.m.
Leben is the lone Cajun who will be participating in two events as he joins fellow senior Lawrence Willis in the triple jump at 6 p.m. Saturday
Willis, a fourth-place finisher at the NCAA National Championships last year, is coming off a spectacular finish at the Sun Belt Conference championships. He picked up his third consecutive Sun Belt outdoor triple jump title with a mark of 53-06.50 that won the event by over three feet.
Earlier in the season, Willis set his personal best distance of 55-01.00 to place second overall in the triple jump competition at the Texas Relays. The mark ranks as the second longest triple jump recorded in school history trailing only Ndabe Mdhlongwa's distance of 55-09.25 set in 1996 and qualified him for this weekend's meet.
Leben finished runner-up to Willis in the triple jump at the SBC meet, second in the 110-meter hurdles, and third in the 400-meter hurdles. Leben recorded personal best marks of 49-11 in the triple and 13.93 in the 110-meter hurdles.
Walter Whitfield rounds out the Cajuns entries on the men's side as he competes in the steeplechase at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Whitfield captured both the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:25.20 and the 5,000-meter in 15:29.13 to give the Cajuns two titles in the distance races at the Sun Belt meet.
The Louisiana women will be represented by senior Amanda Caffey. Caffey, the 2004 Sun Belt Conference javelin champion, will be throwing at 3 p.m. Saturday. Caffey gave the women's team its first event individual title at a Sun Belt meet in three years with a first place mark of 145-8 in the javelin competition.
The top five individuals and top three relay teams in the events will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held June 9-12 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Live updates will be available on-line at www.lsusports.net and a full recap with results will be available after each day is complete.
Tickets can be purchased online, in person, or on the phone at 225-578-2184 or toll free at 1-800-960-8587. Two-day reserved seating is $20 while one-day general admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.
