Re: Good Bye Student Union
Gonna miss that place. The amount of terrible meals I had in the cafeteria, the amount of scantrons I bought at the bookstore, the job fairs in the ballroom. A little piece of all us dies with this place. Though, that's prolly for the best.

That place had the oddest smell. Not found anywhere else on campus. Weird.
I'll never forget the old Bulldog on the wall near the side entrance. Wish I could have gotten e momento off of that.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
Damn, I didn't know they were tearing it completely down. I thought they were just giving it a huge face-lift. I would have went all Google maps on the inside of the old one if I would have known that. I'll miss ya ole yella.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
There is no way they trashed that old bulldog by the bookstore...im pretty sure they would have kept something like that...future auction maybe?
Re: Good Bye Student Union
I too picked up a many of text books and scantrons in my years. I remember calling my parents after I picked up my graduation cap and gown. Still one of my finest moments at the university.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
I met my wife in that building. She worked at the Info Desk as a student worker. We spent a many hours together in their while she was working.
LOTS of memories!!!

And I worked as a student worker for Career Services. I worked every single one of those career days.... :D
Re: Good Bye Student Union
I remember the smell of the oil on the bowling lanes. I bowled on the USL team and I remember a friend bowling a 300 game there. Sometimes the lanes had so little oil, sparks would fly off of the bowling ball because of the heat from the friction.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
hawk I gotta disagree with one thing. I for one did not mind the food. Not saying it was the best, but I enjoyed the chicken finger place and the cafe was pretty good. The food by Follett's was definitely way better.
Does anyone know what food places will be in the new union?
Re: Good Bye Student Union
I can tell you the food was better in the union than it was in the old Martin Dinning Hall next McCullough, Roy and Caffery.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
Met my wife of 8 years in the Cafeteria(1999). Many good memories there.

So you don't like The UNITED States of America?

Dang! I didn't know it was on the chopping block. I kind of hate to see it go. I'm glad I got this shot this fall before a game. What will the new one look like?

Yeah, but making breakfast was way easier at Martin Dining Hall when you had an 8 am class! I was more for quantity over quality back then!
Re: Good Bye Student Union
Thought they were saving the ballroom and the bk store??? Can't really tell from the photo if that part is still there or not!!!

I think that's the bookstore in the background of the photo. The theater would be out of the photo.
You can follow the Helmut thread linked below. He's been updating photos (although not as often as the dorms which were across the street :D).

Re: Good Bye Student Union
I wonder if there was a student fee fails option, and a student fee passes option?
(on how extensive the remodel/rebuild would be)

Bookstore and ball room will stay but will be extremely renovated.
Re: Good Bye Student Union
The area of the student union being demolished will be rebuilt but shifted to McKinley Street. Leaving a fairly large area between cypress lake, the ballroom and the bookstore for an open air plaza. the big concrete canopy will remain. The area between the bookstore and Guillory hall (the old bowling alley and original student union) will be a new wing off of the bookstore for food service. The eyesore buildings and Guillory Hall will be demolished after the renovations to the student union are completed. A plaza area will be built where Guillory Hall is now for use of the students living in the residence halls. The area where the eysore buildings are will be landscaped.
I was going to post photos of the demolition this weekend. I usually do a weekly update on Sunday evening. I missed the weekend of the 22 of December because I went to the New Orleans bowl and was pressed for time.

I hope this will suffice. I took it last year before the White-out game.
