When does Spring Football begin? Any one have an idea of the position battles that will be taking place? Also, is there any new recruits who have enrolled early and will be participating in spring drills? Thanks in advance guys, looking forward to a big 2007 season!
Spring football begins on March 7 with the Spring Game on March 31. I believe a DE who originally signed with UAB but never enrolled is here now. I can't recall his name. QB will have quite a bit of attention in spring drills. Desormeaux is the guy who will be No. 1 going into spring. Unfortunately the two high school signees won' be here until after school ends.Quote:

Guys, I get goosebumps thinking about 2007 Cajun football. It's gonna be sweet and not because of the Fall sugar cane harvest either.

Just curious what you mean by the "short" passing game? 5-15 yds.?? I personally think we have to take shots downfield and be successful in doing so. Completeting passes that are in the 20+ yd. range will loosen up defenses and keep them honest, giving Fenroy a better chance to break big runs. While we did have some success in passing, a better passing game will help our running game. I feel our receivers should play better this year as they will have more experience. I feel if we get creative with our play calling, 2007 could be a special season for Cajun football.Quote:

JMO. The majority up to 12-15 yards off MikeD scrambling around (he is no pocket passer) and dumping off to RBs, TEs and any of out WRs who work to get open and hold onto the ball when it hits them in the hands. I don't see MikeD throwing the ball downfield with a lot of success unless he develops it between now and September.Quote:

I totally agree. If we can just get some underneath routes that result in a catch... and then maybe a few YACs, that is all this offense needs to really get rolling, coupled with what I suspect is going to be an awesome running game next year.Quote:

I guess the two florida teams will head to the Swamp and the we have Middle and ARK ST away. Who knows about NT with Dodge ball coming.. he recruited like 4 receivers over 6'. I think we have a great group of guys who will play hard, but i have no idea who will actually come out on top. I look forward to Clutch's Spring assesment. I have a feeling we will see a lot of new faces out there.

The high school signees are still in school until May and do not start with the team until August reporting time. They do not participate in Spring ball even though I know they would probably give anything to be there. They must provide final grades and proof of high school graduation to the NCAA to play on any collegiate team and then receive their eligibility for the Fall.Quote:

Remember, there are TWO ways to stretch the field. You can stretch it vertically, like USC, or you can stretch it from sideline to sideline, like Texas Tech [in the passing game] and Air Force [running the ball]. We are blessed with two outstanding tailbacks who are both also excellent catching the ball out of the backfield. We have at least two WR's who are explosively fast. We have one of the best option QB's in the country. We have some holes to fill up front, but we just signed one of the best recruiting classes of OL's in the history of the school. Over all, things look rosy on that side of the ball.
Having seen the schemes run by FIU, I also expect our 'D' to be improved. ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK. We'll get burned for a few big plays, but we'll create enough havoc and turnovers to make up for that. We'll have MUCH more speed up front [front 7] than last year; look for Lamar Morgan to move to OLB, and Dylan McCoy at SS. We signed two JUCO guys who should be lockdown corners. And the few defensive freshmen we signed are all hosses: a lockdown corner, a pair of studly DE's, a MLB who will be a terror, and an 'athlete' that I think will end up at FS.
That being said, EVERY other team in the SBC will also be improved. I like the way this conference is shaping up. Look for 3 or more bowl games for SBC teams in the near future; the conference as a whole is starting to mature, and is planted smack on top of the hottest recruiting grounds in the country. Do not be surprised to see the SBC pass up CUSA and/or the MAC in football. Sooner or later the F_U's are going to play at the level of their budgets, Troy ain't going away, UNT will rebound, MTU will continue to improve, as will ASU. WKU is coming aboard, and has the budget to be instantly credible. We have to do something about our budget to keep up.
The bad thing about being in an improving conference is that you have to get better just to stay even. It's a challenge that I'm sure we are up to.

I like your assessment of how the latest coaching changes and players may impact us next year. I hope you are right. I agree that the other SBC programs are not hanging around waiting for UL to get it going. I hate to add pressure to Bustle and staff, but 2007 cannot be a rebuilding year. They have to find a way to succeed. I've heard many a suggestion on how to increase funding for UL athletics, and the only means I am left with, is to have football crank it up. I just don't see any large, additional infusion of money coming in unless we provide a product that either a huge collective group of fans start pouring money into the chest, or a major money man steps up and kicks the funding up a notch. My personal preference would be to see a couple of sugar daddy moneymen show off a little bit, and I think the rest will follow. And again, for everyone going back to just an "all call" for fans... that is happening and always will, and it will always be the same.
