It was at a youth football all-star game six years ago. McGuire, the quarterback, tossed three touchdowns to Baldwin, the receiver.

The two would hook up for four more years in Gulf Breeze uniforms. Now, the pair are hooking up in what could be a Dolphins' first, becoming the first duo from the same class to commit to Division-I schools.

Baldwin, who caught 32 passes for 469 yards and six touchdowns this season, verbally committed to Stanford last month. McGuire, who threw for 1,558 yards and 13 touchdowns, made his pledge to Louisiana-Lafayette this past weekend.

"Louisiana-Lafayette was looking for a guy that possesses the ability to throw, but at the same time provide an extra running threat. They were excited when they saw Brad," Dolphins coach Chris Nemith said. "In (Stanford's) eyes, they're looking for Doug to make an impact early."

Baldwin chose Stanford rather than offers from ULL and North Carolina State because of the Cardinals' loyalty despite postseason surgery on his right shoulder.

His reaffirmed his decision during his official visit to the campus this past weekend, despite coach Walt Harris being fired after a 1-11 season -- the program's worst mark in four decades.

"I had an idea that everybody had their noses in books and that's all they did," said Baldwin, who boasts a 3.95 grade point average. "When I got there it was friendly. People were down to earth. The football players were always together. It was pretty much like a family. That's exactly what I was looking for because that's exactly what we had at Gulf Breeze."

McGuire, who turned down an offer from Florida International, enjoyed a similar experience to the college town in the heart of Louisiana's friendly Acadiana region.

It didn't hurt that the Ragin' Cajuns are coached by Ricky Bustle, Michael Vick's offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech.

"It fit me well. They told me I'd be competing coming in," said McGuire, the Dolphins four-year starter who will be given a shot to replace another four-year quarterback in ULL's Jerry Babb. "You can tell when something's right."

Guess that answers the question about what position Desormeaux is going to be playing next year. Looking forward to seeing DES used as a Reggie Bush type player. Should be exciting!!

Um I don't read "competing coming in" as a guarantee.

But he is right, there will be a new starter at the helm so this is a super opportunity.

The important tidbit I read here is that McGuire chose UL over another Sun Belt team (FIU). Out-recruiting other SBC schools is good news.

No, the good news is that on the other committment [if indeed he committed], Jaron Odom, we out-recruited Auburn, Boston College and Memphis.

If Jaron Odom did commit, that's a HUGE pick up for the O-Line. God knows we need someone to replace BIG COX on the line. Now, Best Case scenario would be to pick up Jaron's fellow teammate Brandon Curry. Talk about we would have some SERIOUS BEEF on the line then. Starting to get excited about next season with all this recruting news...O.. ..O.. ..O.. ..O.. ..O.. ..O.. ..O..

Padrick playing for FIU was a darn good quarterback. Perhaps we won out because Strock agreed to resign at the end of the season.

I agree that having big quality lineman on both sides of the ball can make quarterbacks and running backs a lot better.

I firmly believe that back to back top 10 finishes in Rushing Offense led to this high level of intrest by quality linemen. Them big uglies LOVE to run block.

Although FIU was the only other school to offer McGuire, WVU and Florida showed interest. I know this as one of my coworkers is a West Virginia grad and showed me a site where they were listed as showing interest.

For McGuire, a four-year starting quarterback at Gulf Breeze High in Florida, that remained the University of Louisiana at Lafayette — issuing the Ragin’ Cajuns a commitment — despite the recent firing of their offensive coordinator.

“I was definitely worried when I heard,” McGuire said. “But coach (UL-Lafayette head coach Ricky) Bustle called and assured me the offense wasn’t going to change much.”

McGuire, a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder, provides UL-Lafayette with its sixth commitment and second from a quarterback — joining Chris Masson of Miami, Fla. McGuire opted for the Cajuns over Sun Belt Conference foe Florida International.

“It’s four hours from home and that’s something I was looking for,” said McGuire, who is qualified academically. “They started recruiting me last year. Coach (UL-Lafayette assistant Shawn) Quinn was here and I met coach Bustle in the spring. We talked and communicated ever since.”

McGuire expressed an initial concern over the direction of UL-Lafayette’s offense — a run-pass system that best suited his talent whether the quarterback lined up in the shotgun or under center.

“He said it was his offense and that he wasn’t going to change up the style,” McGuire said of Bustle. “That was good to hear. I’ve run both offenses (switching from being under center to the shotgun midway through his senior season), so whichever one they go with I’ll have experience running it.”

Gulf Breeze football coach Chris Nemith said McGuire commands a certain respect from those around him.

“The big intangible with him is that he’s very humble,” Nemith said. “He’s what you want in a quarterback. When he says something people listen.”

McGuire took every snap during his 41-game career — guiding Gulf Breeze to three straight winning seasons and a playoff appearance as a freshman.

McGuire accounted for 6,705 total yards in his career and 62 touchdowns — passing for 5,278 yards and 43 touchdowns, while rushing for another 1,427 yards and 19 TDs. During his senior season, he passed for 1,558 yards and 13 TDs, earning first team All-District 1-3A honors.

McGuire, the two-time team offensive MVP, also took part in the Pensacola Sports Association All-Star game on Friday. He made an official visit to UL-Lafayette last weekend, an experience that finalized his decision.

“Coach said he wanted me to come in and compete and help bring them get to the next level,” said McGuire, also a baseball standout at catcher and shortstop.

“So that’s my goal — to come in there, to win a few conference championships and maybe a few bowl games.”

Brad McGuire, a four-year starter at Gulf Breeze (Fla.) High, became the seventh pledge to Ragin' Cajun coach Rickey Bustle's 2007 high school recruiting class after a 41-game career for the Gulf Breeze squad of head coach Chris Nemith.

"I'd met Coach Bustle during my junior year, and I liked him and all the coaching staff since that time," he said.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder had a 4.59 40-yard dash clocking this year, and Nemith said he was equally adept at running what started as a triple-option in his freshman year and morphed into a combination zone option and throwing attack similar to what the Cajuns have run for two years.

"I knew he was special at the end of his first year," Nemith said. "He got hurt in our last game, and we were told he wasn't going to be able to play in a shoot-out (tiebreaker) to see who went to the playoffs."
