Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
Tom Benson, the NFL's New Orleans Saints owner, has agreed to purchase the Hornets from the league for $338 million, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports on Friday. The league had purchased the Hornets from George Shinn for $318 million in December 2010 because of that owner's financial problems.

Good to see all the survival money from the state put to good use.

One thing Benson has learned is that a winner makes the owner more money than a loser. I like this if it is true. He is 84 and counting but his grandaughter is a smart young women who has a lot to do with the Saints success. Look for him to hire a greaat business manager to be president and gm, and that guy in turn a great coach. Actually I think we currently have a gerat coach who could do a lot with some first line NBA players.

Good news for the Bees/Whatever-name-might-be-changed-to. Could use some good news after seeing my Magic get killed by Atlanta.
Re: Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
He spends $338 million on a basketball team then turns around and tells a top 3 qb in the league he can't afford 10 million more to sign him.

It ain't a cash issue, it is a "team" issue. There is no coincidence that the top three paid quarterbacks teams have sucking defenses, all of them pay one position too much, of course without that position the others matter very little. It is a balancing act.
Benson by league contract with the player association haas to almost maximize the salary cap every year. Let's not make it a Benson is a tightwad, he never was. He just plain threw money into the wrong oil wells for decades, and if he fails to land Brees he will have throw money down a bad well.
It is a game of chicken, Brees will sign he cannot ever get what a year without pay back, the Saints have no other options. The important thing is neither can afford him not going to practice, especially without Payton.

:ms11:
Yeah let's gut the entire team to pay 1 player 5 million more per year than the next highest paid player in the league.....
Re: Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
hey maybe they can make a trade with Utah for the name Jazz. Utah Jazz sounds stupid
Re: Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
I just thought it was ironic. I know there is a salary cap.

Their current GM has done a very good job so far.

Agree 100%. By the looks of the personnel he's brought in, I think Demps has done a pretty good job. As of last week the Hornets led the NBA in the number of starting lineups at 23. Injuries have really killed them this year. I think most this year were expecting them to be as bad as the Wizards and Bobcats have been but that hasn't been the case, and I think that is a big reflection on both Demps and Monty. Benson better keep both.
Re: Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
Watched the press conference today on CST. Plenty of praise was lavished on everybody all the way down to the peanut vendor.
The sale will be finalized upon the state following through and that is expected.
Stern pretty much cut of questions about two things. The first being name change. He said that could be broached when the deal is final. The other was a question about Drew Brees. He told the ESPN reporter the question was off base for this press conference. Also did not close the door getting back Jazz name. He said each owner owns their own names, but can get creative.
Upon final sale New Orleans set to get 2014 All Star game. Mitch also made pitch for 2018 because that is the 300th birthday of the city.

I'd be willing to bet they have more bobcats in Utah.
1. THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ (Bring the name back where it BELONGS.)
2. The CHARLOTTE Hornets (Same as above)
3. The Utah Bobcats (or maybe Cougars?)
Re: Saints owner Benson buys NBA's Hornets
now that sounds right....those 3 names....heard something on TV today that they may get the name Jazz back in New Orleans
