Interesting Statistics Through 17 Games

Through 17 games I have discovered several interesting, if not important, statistics.

The Cajuns are 0-6 games in which we scored 3 runs or less. We are 11-0 when scoring 4 or more.

We have given up 11 unearned runs. Strangely, those are not more or less evenly distributed. 9 of the 11 have been scored when Sam Ryan was pitching. In total runs allowed, she has allowed only 1 more run than Wheeler or Noble. 17 compared to the 16 that each of them has allowed.

Since none of our pitchers are strikeout oriented, it is almost inevitable that we will commit more errors, since more balls get put in play. Right now we are averaging 1 error per game.

We are also averaging about 3.9 free bases [walks plus HBP] per game.

If we can clean those two areas up it will help a lot.

Offensively, we have 6 of our 11 regular position players with OBP higher than .400. We need the other 5 to reach that threshold in order to increase runs scored and reduce runners LOB. Smith [.393] and Credeur [.385] are very close. The others are all over .300, so it is not like we are as bad off as it sometimes seems. White [.413 OBP] and Liscano [.485 OBP] have been very pleasant surprises offensively.

I guarantee they are doing this analysis and more. It is their job.

Just as an aside, this season, which some have called a "rebuilding" year, the Cajuns are playing 16 P4 games, 11 of which are against the SEC, 4 vs the Big 10 and 1 Big 12. Right now we are 4-4 vs the P4. I fully expect no worse than 6-10, and possibly as good as 9-7 at season's end. Then again, I am an relentless optimist.

Love the effort, but this is clearly a rebuilding year.

I do like this team. They are doing what they can with what they have. Couple individuals need to get going if they are going to compete for a conference title. But they are setting the groundwork for what Coach Habetz is trying to do, and given what they were handed, I think it is going as well as can be reasonably expected.

At the beginning of the year, I would have totally agreed with you. That being said, we are 2-4 vs the top 25 [as of this week] with 3 of those losses to Top 10 teams. There have not been that many years with that good a record vs quality competition.

We had one bad loss in week 1 and 1 in week 2. Our other 4 losses are all to Top 25 teams. I do not expect either Houston or Ole Miss to be Top 25 by seasons end, but I do expect them to be Top 50 teams. Auburn won't be # 1 for long, but I fully expect them to be Top 25. Texas will be Top 10. I do not think we will be swept by the SEC this week, and I would be surprised but not shocked if we won 2 of the 4 SEC games and swept the 2 Iowa games. Our OOC SOS is strong, and we have a chance to do fairly well against it.
The SBC is better top to bottom than I ever remember it being, but is not strong at the top. In any event the conference will not hurt us, though I do wish we did not play Marshall. We do not play GaSt or ApSt, the other two weak teams in the East, and we do play both Coastal and JMU. Coastal has a great RPI now, but I do not expect them to hold up against Troy, Texas State, Louisiana, Georgia Southern and James Madison.

I believe the conference title will be won by a Western team, and that it will be, as usual, either the Cajuns or Texas State, though ULM and Troy are also capable.

I need to follow your posts more. While I do not fully agree, I see your point; however, either way, you might be the most optimistic/positive poster on this board. Well done!

Thanks. I try to be realistic in my projections, but it is sometimes difficult. This is one of those times. The fact that our remaining non-conference schedule is so tough, and that there is a very real possibility that 7 of our 8 conference series will be against Top 100 RPI teams, and 2, maybe 3 of those against Top 50 RPI really has me pumped up. Assuming that even only CCU and TxSt are Top 50 and ULM does not make the cut, we still have 12 games remaining against Top 50 Opponents and 20 against RPI 51-100.

The SBC is VERY close to the point that the individual teams in the conference will end the season with better RPI than when Conference play begins. I cannot possibly overstate how valuable that would be to UL and to the conference as a whole.

Another point which will positively affect us: The teams we play in conference have played or will have played 71 games against P4 schools, including 10 games against ACC top 50 teams, 7 against Big 12 top 50 and an astonishing 24 games against the SEC, all of whom are Top 50. Of those 41 games, 33 are in the top 25 RPI today. That is a ton of wins on our Opponents-Opponents portion of our RPI. Even better, 15 games are vs top 10 teams in today's RPI. Our own schedule includes 15 games against P4 opponents, 10 of which are top 25 RPI today and 5 are top 10.

Plus 6 of our 8 conference series are against top 100 RPI, and a seventh should be in the top 100 by the time we play them. Our remaining non-P4 non conference games are one against McNeese [75] and 2 against LTU [68].

If we do anything remotely close to what we have done in any year in the past 15, we willl be fine.
