A unified brand goes a long way towards that end.
He's too busy seeing where "Chitimacha Charlie" fits in his "poll" to understand the VALUE of branding to a university. Using his logic, we position ourselves alongside of :
Austin Longhorns
Chapel Hill Tarheels
Reno Wolfpack
Berkeley Bears
Madison Badgers
Urbana-Champaign Fightin Illini
OH, WAIT!!........

If your mascot is not a physical representation of your nickname, then it must be a background figure. It should be lost to some.
The Catahoula is the epitome of unique. It is a 100% Louisiana product. It will have a page in the program with it's ties to Louisiana and the Cajun people in detail. It will roam the stadium on gameday. People will love it. End of story.
Anything more than this will create confusion, and the temptation will prove too great in marketing the you know what out of a gator. I predict that if we ever adopt a gator mascot, it will be only a matter of time until we change the nickname from Cajuns to Gators.

And we don't want to lose any cheerleaders when they have to catch it every Saturday at Cypress Lake. :D
Re: UL taking time to get it right with Cajuns mascot
I would love a masked Mamou type Mardi Gras person "Cajuns Sideline Mascot" walking a Catahoula Curr Dog. That'd be on par with TAMU, UTenn, etc.

Is the prime resident of the campus jewel background enough?

Official State dog further strengthens our marketing initiative as Louisiana.
The story of the Cataholua reads like the story of Louisiana.
It has a history of hunting big game in the Swamps and backwoods of Louisiana along side our ancestors.
Kids love dogs. Chicks love dogs. Alpha and Beta males love dogs.
We had a dog as a mascot, an English Bulldog, when we were USL. Need to move on to our oldest, 118 year tradition of a gator in the swamp and in The Swamp.
