TROY, Ala.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns (27-8, 12-4 SBC) baseball team opened a three-game road Sun Belt Conference series with a 13-3 victory over defending conference champions Troy (19-15, 7-6 SBC) on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
After being shutout for the first four innings, the Cajuns broke the game open in the fifth inning as they scored seven runs with two outs in the inning.
Offensively, the Cajuns collected 11 hits on the night compared to just six for the Trojans.
Four Ragin’ Cajuns collected multiple hits on the night and Scott Hawkins made his only hit of the evening count as he hit his 10th homer of the season.
Jonathan Lucroy extended his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games as he collected a pair of doubles to go along with three RBI.
The Cajuns kept the Trojans at bay with a pair of superb pitching performances from Buddy Glass and Danny Farquhar.
Glass (7-1) worked 6.1 innings scattering six hits and not allowing an extra base hit. He surrendered three unearned runs. He walked three batters but struck out five to earn his seventh win of the season.

Farquhar entered the game in relief and was masterful. The sophomore worked 2.2 innings and did now allow a hit. The only Trojan player to reach base against Farquhar came by way of a walk. Farquhar fanned four batters and was just one-third of an inning shy of picking up his team-leading seventh save.
Neither team could get anything going in the early goings.
In the first inning, the Cajuns were retired in order, while Troy got a one out single for the first hit of the game. The Cajuns turned the inning-ending double play and after one inning of play both teams had faced the minimum.
Nolan Gisclair collected the first hit of the game for the Cajuns with one out in the top of the second inning. The Ragin’ Cajuns were unable to do anything as the a double-play ended the Cajuns threat.
In Troy’s half of the second, Glass started the inning by striking out the first batter. A ground out recorded the second out. A two-out single did nothing for the Trojans as Glass struck out the next batter of the inning.
In the third, Matt Hicks started the inning with a single, but a fielder’s choice erased Hicks from the base pad. A strikeout recorded the second out of the inning and a caught stealing retired the Cajuns in the third.
Troy’s half of the third started with a fly ball and was followed by a strikeout. Troy was the first team to have a player reach second base as the next batter walked and then stole second. A ground ball ended the inning and saw the score knotted at 0-0 after three complete innings.
The Cajuns put a runner in scoring position in the fourth inning, but were unable to do anything after that. Josh Logan doubled to left centerfield, but a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a ground out stranded Logan at second base.
The Trojans were the first team to scratch the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. A Cajuns’ error allowed the leadoff runner to reach safely. Glass worked the count full to the next batter, but ended up walking him. Back-to-back fly balls recorded the first two outs of the inning. A wild pitch allowed the two runners to advance and a four-pitch walk loaded the bases. An infield single plated the first runner of the game and broke the scoreless deadlock. A single to centerfield plated two runners and a Cajuns error allowed the runners to advance to second and third. UL worked out of the jam by inducing a ground out to end the inning, but the damage had been done and the Cajuns trailed 3-0 after four innings.
The Ragin’ Cajuns did not waste any time as they responded in the top half of the fifth inning. Following a strikeout and a ground out, Hicks drew a four-pitch walk to start things off for the Cajuns. Xavier Alexander doubled to right field as the Trojan’s right fielder lost the ball in the lights. Hicks came around to score on the play and cut the lead to 3-1. Devon Bourque walked to give UL runners on first and second. An infield single by Josh Logan loaded the bases for the Cajuns. Jefferies Tatford was hit with his team leading 11th pitch of the season to trim the lead to just one run. Lucroy doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and put the Cajuns ahead 5-3. Hawkins followed Lucroy with his 10th homerun of the year. The seven-run inning put the Ragin’ Cajuns ahead by a score of 7-3.
The Cajuns put up a six spot in the top of the eighth to cushion their lead. Lucroy doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. After falling behind 0-2, Hawkins worked the count full before drawing a base on balls. A Gisclair single through the left side loaded the bases for UL. Justin Robichaux entered the game as a pinch hitter and reached base on a fielder’s choice that erased the lead runner. Hicks drew a walk to plate a runner. A double by Alexander scored a pair of runners and extended the UL lead to 10-3. Bourque drew another walk to extend the inning for the Cajuns. A sacrifice fly by William Long plated Hicks from third base. Alexander advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Tatford singled through the right side to score Bourque from third.
Farquhar was able to shut down the vaunted Troy bats and preserve the win.
The Cajuns and Trojans will continue the series at 11:00 a.m. The time change came about because of projected weather concerns in the Troy area.

They may have scored in only two innings, but that was more than enough for UL's baseball team to open a pivotal Sun Belt Conference series in a big way Friday night.
The Ragin' Cajuns put up seven runs in the fifth inning and added six more insurance runs in the eighth, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to post a 13-3 victory over defending Sun Belt champion Troy in the opening game of a three-game weekend series at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Ala.
Starting pitcher Buddy Glass and reliever Danny Farquhar didn't allow an earned run while checking the heavy-hitting Trojans on six hits, while UL's offense lit up Trojan starter Joe Hallahan for seven runs after two were out in the fifth.
The top five spots in the batting order combined for eight hits, but Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux credited seven-eight-nine hitters Matt Hicks, Xavier Alexander and Devon Bourque for their roles in the big innings. Hicks scored twice and knocked in one run, Alexander had two hits and three RBI and Bourque scored twice and drew three walks.

"Early this year when we were really rolling, the bottom of the lineup was turning it over for us," said Cajun coach Tony Robichaux. "Our last few games, we hadn't been doing that and we'd been striking out a lot. Tonight instead of striking out, we were drawing walks and setting up big innings."
The 23rd-ranked Cajuns (27-8, 12-4) drew seven walks from Troy pitching, and three extra-base hits in the fifth helped give UL the lead for good.
Hicks' two-out double that Troy right fielder Steven Felix lost in the lights ignited that rally, and the first of two Jonathan Lucroy doubles cleared the bases moments later off Hallahan (2-4). Scott Hawkins followed with his 10th home run of the year, scoring Lucroy ahead of him and putting UL in front 7-3
That was more support than Glass (7-1) needed. The junior scattered six singles and fanned five, getting in trouble only in the fourth when an error and two walks loaded the bases. Beau Brooks' infield hit broke the scoreless tie and Shohei Fujita followed with a checked-swing bloop single that plated two more for the Trojans (19-15, 7-6).
"We made mistakes in that inning and Buddy left a slider over the plate," Robichaux said. "Other than that, he pitched great in a very small park where a game can get away from you in a hurry. He just eats up innings."
Farquhar didn't allow a hit and fanned four in two and two-thirds innings, giving up only one baserunner on a walk.
UL blew it open in the eighth off reliever Rob Brown when Lucroy doubled and Nolan Gisclair singled, Hicks drew a bases-loaded walk, Alexander followed with a two-run double, Josh Logan lifted a sacrifice fly and Jefferies Tatford had an RBI single.
Junior lefthander Hunter Moody (4-2) is slated for today's start for the Cajuns against Troy senior righthander Clegg Snipes (2-3). The game will start at 11 a.m. instead of its scheduled 6 p.m. first pitch because of anticipated late-afternoon rain in the Troy area.
