Coach Bartels stepson (a senior) still plays for the Cougars. His name escapes me though. I got the idea that Eric would love to give some payback to his brother for last years loss.

I appreciate the post. I bookmarked the site.
UH did some ____ where they now charge a fee to listen to UH football games via internet radio. Pretty dumb for a school in re-building mode.
Anyway, thanks much for the info. Good luck the rest of the way....

LOUISIANA La. — When senior safety Jamal Smith went down with dislocated ankle five days before the season opener, Louisiana lost a crucial member of its defense.
The week before the South Carolina game sent the Ragin’ Cajun staff scrambling to adjust the secondary, and the effort resulted in some positive moments in a 14-7 loss to the Gamecocks.
Last Saturday against Louisiana Tech, the Cajuns were called for four pass interference penalties and it became clear there was still much to learn about coordination.
Now that Smith has been operated on and will be lost for the season, the staff knows that those adjustments have to be permanent and that the learning curve must be accelerated for younger talent.

“The thing that got us,” head coach Rickey Bustle said on Wednesday, “was that our No. 1 (Smith) and No. 2 (C.C. Brown) guys both missed that week. Jamal got hurt on the Tuesday before the game, and C.C. had some academic things he had to clear up.
“So James Roberts, who we told would be redshirted, played and probably had more snaps in the (South Carolina) game than anybody. Then, last week was C.C.’s first game, and James was backing him up.”
While Smith’s physical skills were solid, his experience and leadership has been hard to replace with new faces.
“We lost our quarterback on the field on defense,” said Bustle, whose Cajuns host Houston on Saturday at Cajun Field. “He was the one who made sure people were lined up in the right place.
“You have to communicate all the time out there on the field, and he was one who would call it right. He was a solid guy.
“Obviously, now we rely on (senior linebacker) Ross Brupbacher to be right. The other guys are coming along.”
Brown and Roberts are currently 1-2 at Smith’s old rover safety position, flanked by senior Patrick Lamy and freshman Wes Simon running 1-2 at the “whip” safety spot and juniors David Prater and Wendall Williams 1-2 at free safety.

I like what I see. Even though the offense has not been putting up points I like his composure. The points will come.
I agree Chuck, as of today on our depth chart, we have 9 new faces seeing playing time on offense (players who did not play last year for us).Quote:

Young team with a lot of new faces. We shall see this weekend, they have been up and they have been down. Now let's see what they do.
Note: On defense we have 12 new players vs. 9 on offense.

U-HoHo must be running a little short in the old cougie bank. From what I understand the announcers are pretty bad.

LOUISIANA La. — If this 2003 football season is going to get turned around, it needs to start tonight.
After hosting the Houston Cougars at 7 p.m. at Cajun Field, UL faces a formidable trio of road games at Minnesota, North Texas and Oklahoma State.
So, at 0-2 on the campaign after last week’s demoralizing 34-3 home loss to Louisiana Tech, coach Rickey Bustle’s squad badly needs to get in gear tonight.
“We didn’t play well enough to win against Tech,” Bustle said. “We made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball.
“Our attitude has been good this week. We had a really good Monday, probably better than Monday during the last two weeks, and we’ve been focused on getting our edge back.”
Houston coach Art Briles is just happy to be back on equal footing with an opponent after last week’s 50-3 crunching at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines dropped the Cougars to 1-1 on the year.

“In a game like this,” Briles said, “you need good things to happen early. We couldn’t create anything.”
It was 22-0 at half, and the Wolverines limited Houston to 138 total yards.
That was quite a comedown after the Cougars opened with a 48-14 thrashing of crosstown rival Rice in Briles’ first game at the UH helm.
“Houston is athletic offensively, and they give you every look in America,” Bustle said. “Our defense has to be very focused. They’re playing a young quarterback (freshman Kevin Kolb), but he played for their coach and has some knowledge of their offense.
“He’s young, but they’re doing a lot of different things. They use all kinds of motions and group sets and starbursts. We just hope we can give him a look and confuse him some.
“They have good skill people. As much as anything, the challenge is to line up in a coverage. We have to control the running game, which we didn’t do Saturday, but hopefully confuse him a little.”
Briles, the 10th coach in UH history, is the first former Cougar player to return to the school as its head coach. He was a three-year assistant at Texas Tech, but made his mark by guiding Stephenville High School to four Texas state championships in Class 4A.
His 1998 Stephenville squad set a national record with 8,650 yards of total offense, and during a six-year run the Yellowjackets were 90-2-1.
He still believes in explosive offense, although UH was throttled last week.
Kolb hit 17-of-22 passes for 246 yards and a pair of scores in the opener, but his 15 completions last week netted just 64 yards. Anthony Evans had 72 yards on 12 carries against Rice, but just 7 on four tries at UM. Brandon Middleton had four catches for 122 yards and two TDs in Week One, but 2-for-17 last week.
The Cougars won last year’s meeting in Houston, 36-17, as the Cajuns compiled a 3-9 record in Bustle’s first season.
One of the few highlights for the Cajuns was Fred Stamps, who scored on a 78-yard bomb in the final minute to cap a 4-for-139 night. Stamps remains the one constant weapon in a Cajun attack that has yet to score a touchdown.
Freshman quarterback Jerry Babb has been solid in his two starts, but hasn’t been able to finish off a drive in the end zone yet.
For that offense, and the Cajuns in general, there’s no time like the present to get going.
CAJUN CLIPPINGS — Minnesota, North Texas and Oklahoma State won by a combined 148-45 last week ... Houston leads the all-time series with UL, 5-2, with the Cajun wins coming in 1946 and 1948 ... the Cajuns haven’t won their third game of the season since a 17-15 victory over Memphis in 1993.
