FULLERTON, Calif. - UL's softball team made its first outing in the prestigious Judi Garman Classic a successful one Thursday afternoon, following the pitching of Brittany Cuevas and a three-run second inning to a 3-1 victory over Fresno State.
The 15th-ranked Cajuns (25-6) are 1-0 in pool play and will face two more highly-regarded pool opponents tonight. UL will face second-ranked Arizona State at 8:15p.m. and Notre Dame at 10:30 p.m.
Teams are placed into championship brackets by their records in pool play, with bracket play beginning Saturday in the tournament formerly known as the KIA Klassic. UL is a former champion of the nationally-known meet, having won the title in 1994, and nine former champions are in this year's field.

Cuevas checked Fresno State (20-9) on three hits and struck out eight in a complete-game effort, with the Bulldogs' only run coming on Kristin Sylvester's solo homer in the second inning. That gave Fresno a 1-0 lead, but the Cajuns came back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Fresno starter Merryann Barr (6-3).
Desi Chatman's double and an RBI single by Lana Bowers, coupled with an error on Fresno shortstop Haley Perkins, helped the Cajun assemble the three-run inning and extend what is now a four-game win streak. UL only managed two other hits in the game, but Cuevas (15-3) made the two-run advantage stand up.
Arizona State is also 1-0 in pool play after taking a 3-0 win over Notre Dame in one of Thursday's opening games. ASU pitcher Katie Burkart tossed a perfect game against the Irish, retiring 21 straight batters and striking out 13.
