One year ago, Michael Desormeaux was redshirting and wasn't happy about it.
This week, he's realizing more than ever what a good decision that was.
"I really, really didn't want to redshirt," Desormeaux said Sunday, minutes after his first practice as the Louisiana starting quarterback.
"I probably thought in the back of my mind that it was the best thing, but I wanted to play."
It's not the way he wanted to earn that slot, but he's getting his chance now, and he'll be under center Thursday when the Ragin' Cajuns open Sun Belt Conference play in a televised contest against Florida Atlantic.
The former Catholic-New Iberia standout was pushed into duty Saturday when Cajun regular Jerry Babb suffered an injured shoulder five plays into the Central Florida contest. Even though UL lost a last-second 24-21 heartbreaker, Desormeaux showed much of the athletic ability that so impressed Cajun coaches during recruiting two years ago.
"He stepped in and took control," said Cajun coach Rickey Bustle. "I think that's what impressed our other kids, the fact that he showed he was going to go out there and fight along with them."
Desormeaux finished up 14-of-26 throwing for 119 yards and rushed for 76 yards, with most of those numbers coming in the second and third quarters after his abrupt entry.
"Jerry's such a great person and athlete, losing someone like him is tough for the team," Desormeaux said. "It's not easy to come in when a guy like that goes down. You don't want to get your first start under these circumstances. But you have to put that aside. You try to be as prepared as you can be."
He now realizes the importance of watching and learning the system last year.
"It's sure better now," he said. "I know I've still got three and a half more years."

It's not like he was awed by his college surroundings in his 2004 natural freshman year, according to the head coach.
"You never felt like he ever was a freshman," Bustle said. "He walked around here last year like he was 30 years old. He's a competitor, and Saturday was a great experience for him."
Three times Saturday, he broke option runs for gains of 10 or more yards, including a 19-yard touchdown called back on a holding penalty well behind the play. Those bursts were carbon copies of many of his exploits at CHNI.
"There's a lot of things very similar to what we were doing there," Desormeaux said of the option running game. "I thought I made some pretty good reads on the zone runs ... that has a chance to be a big play every time if the quarterback reads it right."
"We tried to put him in some of those situations, because that's what he likes," offensive coordinator Rob Christophel said. "He likes running the ball ... it's part of his background. And I think being able to do that may have settled him down some in the passing game."
Babb was in street clothes for Saturday's second half, but kept a running conversation going with Desormeaux every time UL was on defense.
"He had a different perspective from where he was watching," Desormeaux said. "He gave me his point of view, and I was asking him for it. He helped me a lot."
Babb, who is definitely out for Thursday's game and is questionable for at least two weeks, will likely be helping even more this week as Desormeaux prepares for his first collegiate start in a game that's arguably the most important so far for the Cajun squad.
"He's definitely different from Jerry," Christophel said. "He's a little looser. Each of them have their own character, and that's what I like about them. I like that the other kids have rallied around Mike. They know they have a chance to win with him there just like with Jerry."
Up close with Desormeaux:
All-around talent
Desormeaux earned 16 sports letters at Catholic High - five in track, four in football and basketball and three in baseball.
In football, he was his district's offensive MVP as a senior and was a Class 3A All-State selection after throwing for 2,447 yards and 27 scores and rushing for 656 more yards and eight touchdowns.
It's the hair
Desormeaux's curly black hair is longer than most of his teammates, and much longer than he wore it at Catholic High. "You had to have it the right length since it's a Catholic school," he said. "(CHNI) Coach (David) Comeaux likes to clown around some about it now, but I kind of think he likes it.
"The guys here don't give me a lot of flak. Mostly, it's guys that I played with in high school that get on me about it."
No more punt duties
Desormeaux had been playing on both the punt team as the personal protector and on the punt return team through the first three games. He won't be now.
"They took me off of both teams," he said. "I probably won't be back there for at least a while."
Tunes
Part of Desormeaux's game-day routine involves a CD he burned, one full of alternative rock with a healthy dose of Linkin Park and Papa Roach.
"It's pretty upbeat music," he said. "It helps get me focused a little."

This kid deserves a start with the way he played Saturday...Good luck Mike...
Now....If Dez-Mo Begins to win.....Do we yank him when J.B. is healthy? Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Is it Desormeaux?? or Desameaux?Quote:

Babb should get his position back. Desormeaux will get his chance, he's only a freshmen. The QB position looks good for the future.
Which one is it. Should you not lose your position or should the better qb play????????????Quote:

Winning cures everything if we would win three straight games with D-Mo not one person on the field or in the stands would disagree with D-Mo staying at QB. Go Desormeaux .~.
Hopefully it is a very tough decision for the coaches to make. That would mean that we've been winning. But just for argument sake; exactly what "wasn't working" with Babb leading the offense? Seems to me they were starting to click very well (ref: NWSt game).Quote:
