I'm not even saying we need to move on. I don't think Bob deserves that. We should be outlining our expectations with every single extension he does get though and we should collectively have a higher winning percentage floor than 55-58% especially when played through our schedules.

I don't believe this university can afford to do that right now for two reasons: 1) What message do we send out to potential coaches when we fire a coach that won 27 games the year before you terminated him? 2) We are not at a point where the buyout in his contract is affordable right now. I don't think we are going to find someone to buy his contract out considering we have to delay football stadium upgrades because enough money has not been raised for that project.
Coach Marlin has a contract extension in place with goals attached to championships, amongst other goals. Short of terminating for cause, such as NCAA violations which have not been alleged, he will be the coach at UL until otherwise notified. Let's see what happens the next two years.

When you say next two years, are you including 2019? After reading the contract summary, I don't believe any consideration will be given to making a change until 2021. Almost 900 grand for a buyout after this year, over 600 after 2020, and almost 500 grand after 2021. As you stated, there are lots of other athletic department needs that have to be considered right now. When I say that, I presume a losing D1 season will not occur. If that happens, anything is possible.

Mike, what I mean is either Coach Marlin is going to achieve those goals in his contract or not. This year and next year will give us a good indication of the direction of this program. As for what consideration will be given, if he is costing the athletic program money in the long haul, a buyout might be more reasonable decision at that point.

Remember, we all heard the same thing on Coach Hudspeth's contract. Who's going to buy him out? The bottom line is money, and the fans fire coaches. If the Cajun Dome is empty and season tickets are down in a couple of seasons, I believe Dr. Maggard will make a tough financial decision just like he has with Coach Hudspeth. He's hired his own football coach and eventually he will hire his own basketball coach, whether Coach Marlin leaves for another opportunity or he is terminated from his current position. Time will tell us which, how well the program is performing and how much money is in the coffer will decide the time table.

Truer words have never been spoken!! I still hope Marlin turns things around and realize we need a "BIG" in the middle and basketball players just not athletes who play the game.

No, I have not heard anything about being given latitude until 2021. That was just an opinion based upon the buyout. One thing that needs to be clarified is the length of the contract. It actually is for 5 years and goes through 2023. I don't think that means much as the buyout is affordable as you get towards the end of it. You are right in that people said a buyout was something that could not be afforded in Coach Hud's case and a way was found to make a change. In fact they paid him much less than owed due to a lump sum arrangement. I am sure something similar could be done for any coach when a change is made. Reasons for a change with Coach Hud were three straight losing seasons and off the field issues. In Coach Marlin's situation, that is not the case. Granted many fans are frustrated with the good but not good enough results of recent years. However, comments made here are not necessarily representative of the entire fan base. Season tickets have gone up the last two years. More walk up sales are needed. Play like we saw last year and more reasonable pricing is needed for that to happen.

They are looking for JUCO post players. It is the primary focus of spring recruiting. I am confident we will get one. I am not so sure it will be someone who is a quality player. Time will tell.

Nothing is certain or guaranteed when it comes to projections. I don't expect Coach Marlin to have any losing season records, the bottom of the league is just to bad for that. But I don't see 15 or 16 win teams getting the job done either in this league. Both are very possible considering youth on this squad next season and how well we finish this season. I hope that neither will be the case and we will be talking about better results. My only point to you is when a coach becomes more expensive for the program to keep in comparison to the buyout, they usually get terminated. Dr Maggard will make the right decision for the program in either case.
