The important thing is... Which uniform color combination we wear. All else is trivial.
We were down to programs that have to fly in anyway. What's the difference? I actually like it being SDSU. We win and we've seriously accomplished something. We are going to bring some fans and it will be a NO Bowl record. Get fired up Cajuns!
It was possibly going to be Toledo, Temple, Marshall or even Illinois with some other teams like Tulsa being tossed around. Do you suspect a MAC team will travel better after we've had several years of poor attendance from those fanbases? How does attendance suffer with us essentially playing a home game against a solid 8-4 team? Isn't that better than FIU and Ohio?
I agree. Great challenge and a team and fanbase that are in a similar position as we are. From their boards, their fans are pretty happy to be playing as they remember recent years with 1-2 wins and the bottom of the MWC. They haven't been to a bowl in a while and I think their fanbase will jump at the chance to travel to one of the funnest and most unique cities around.
I don't feel like the New Orleans bowl took advantage of their unique situation of having a local team in the bowl game. A regional team or a team from an AQ conference would have created a better atmosphere that both teams would enjoy. Now, it will just be 20k Cajus in a 70K seat stadium. I doubt SDSU sells 10K tickets. A non-AQ team within the region or evan a AQ team would have been better than SDSU. All of their fans have to fly in. The product may not be worth the price to them. SDSU does not have a fan base that travels like an AQ. A regional non-AQ teams fans could at least drive in for the game. I just feel like the Cajuns got the short end of the stick here. Geaux Cajuns!
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think there were a ton of the teams you speak of available to be picked. Please list some.
Maybe in the Mountian West Conference.
Ouch. That can't help attendance. Time to start mass-mailing "Visit New Orleans" fliers to the San Diego metro area.
Just show them the Popeyes commercial where they talk about all the great "Cajun" food over there
I think artificial turf in S.D. would melt :)
The Aztecs play on natural turf. The same turf that the Charges play on at Qualcomm Stadium.
Hea guys, Aztec here. Congrats on a bowl game. As pointed out above, we play on grass (same stadium the Chargers play in), and actually most of the other teams play on turf in the MWC.
A little about us: run pro set. Ronnie Hillman is a super soph that has over 3k yards in 2 years, smaller back but quick and can battle a little for extra yards, explodes through holes. Our Sr. qb holds basically every passing record but is wildly inconsistent and inaccurate, we lost two wrs to the nfl last year and that hasn't helped. But, we're a balanced offense, lots of power-0 and play pass. Lost Brady Hoke to Michigan and maybe more importantly Al Borges as OC to michigan so playcalling has suffered a bit.
Defense: 3-3-5, Rocky long the head coach basically created the defense and it's predicated on blitzing most downs, corners are physical and on an island. Haven't created a lot of turnovers the last few weeks after creating a lot the first 3/4 of the season
Special teams: punter has a big leg, place kicker is god awful, 5-12 on the year, missed a pat and 2 chippies vs WYoming in our most disappointing couple point loss
Last 10 weeks we've started absurdly slow, spotting teams 3 scores before rallying back. Defense is quick, but rocky sometimes over blitzes particularly early, o-line is experienced but maybe not as good as last year, dropped a lot of bombs for tds.
Good luck, a lot of us are trying to get flights together, so hopefully we'll have a decent turnout.
Go Aztecs
We are 8-4 for the season and lost most of our games against real tough competition. Lost at Michigan, at home vs TCU and Boise State.
We averaged 41,000 per game and lead te MWC in attendance. Yes, more than TCU or Boise State.
Ronnie Hillman is the real deal. One of the very best running backs in the nation.
We know very little about your team, but 8-4 tells us you are fairly tough and will have a home field advantage. The Aztecs do not travel well (or haven't in the past) to Bowl games on the road. In fact we have only been to about 4 D1 Bowl Games ever and have been playing D1 football since 1969 or so.
This should be a real good game.
Hey, is this the school that "Bo" Lamar attended? That guy could shoot lights out.
Sweet, I like the UL reference.
