Releasing a bat or a golf club or a tennis racket on the back-swing has a lot more to do with an over-kill attempt than anything else. I, like all of us, have seen bats wind up all over a field when they have slipped out of the hands of players and yes, some end up in dugouts. I don't recall any of those players in all the games in all the years being accused of doing it on purpose and there is a reason...one would never know if it was gonna hit the 3rd base coach, an on deck guy, the ball person, a fan in the stands.................

Any message wanted sent is a lot easier to send by hitting the ball. imo

The game should be a good one. Lets all enjoy the event and may the better team on that nite win. :)

If I remember it was the timing of the bat being thrown and by that particular player that really heated things up. But that was back then this is now and let the best team (UL) win.
