While we are at it, let's start a College Football Players Union. A lot of these things sound good, but the abuse would cause disaster down the road.

roughly 5% of college players have a chance of making it pro. thats draft picks and undrafted free agents
A stipend won't get rid of agents and money in general in college football. The reason they want the stipend is so that the successful programs can gain and even greater advantage over smaller and less successful schools. And to say that an education is a reward to players who don't even want one to begin with...is like giving a blind person a pair of 3D glasses as a gift. Thanks...but...what the hell am I supposed to do with this? They only go the college route because it is the only route. How else are they supposed to get to the NFL?
Baseball does it better than anyone. You think you have what it takes and you don't want to waste anyone's time or money...here is a check...come play ball for money. College basketball has been fighting this for years and they finally struck a blow by getting the one and done rule. One removed from High School...for what? Delaying the inevitable helps no one. How much do you think the NCAA and major universities have in the pockets of NFL Owners to keep that 3 year rule in place?
Very few players could make the jump from High School to the NFL. But those few are marquee cash machines that Universities and the NCAA withdraw from like my grandma on bingo night. Without that...you would see a massive drop off in attendance and TV Dollars. They keep these kids indentured long enough to keep that kitty nice and full...with no care or worry about the well being of these kids in general. They are just pawns. But god forbid they try to get any pieces of that pie!! Sauce for the goose I always say...if those Universities can plunder the players...why can't the players plunder the Universities?
95,000 people pay for the facilities, equipment, coaches, etc. Taxpayers pay for the free tuition.
I said paid it back if they don't graduate. There are two very easy answers to this.
1) Graduate from college, which is the goal right? Take advantage of the opportunity of getting free education and do something with it.
2) Take your million dollar salary and pay the money back. Surely Jadeveon can take a portion of his guaranteed contract and repay the academia side for giving him a free ride.
You missed the point. Those people show up because of who is on that field playing. People like to say they are there for the name on the front of the jersey but everybody knows it's really because of the name on the back. It wasn't that long ago you could have an entire row to yourself at Cajun field, now not so much. If it was all about the name on the front, then the stadium would be sold out even if the team didn't win a game.
No the goal of college athletics is to get to the next level, the education is a back up plan and anybody that tells you differently isn't telling the truth.
So the money they made off using his name, his likeness, and jerseys with his number on them wasn't enough to cover the cost of his scholarship?
So you're telling me that every fan can name every player on the field for their favorite team? I bet every one of the 23,108 people at our game Saturday could name the starting left guard, right? 1/3 of people at games couldn't name the skill position players. They are going to the game because their TEAM is winning. Looks to me that South Carolina is doing just fine with or without Clowney. He is not bigger than the name on the front of the jersey PERIOD. If Clowney went to Alabama, USC football would still exist and fans would still go. Is he a special player? Yes. Does he deserve special treatment? Absolutely not. You signed a letter stating that you would play football for the University of South Carolina. Honor it!
I believe that athletic scholarships are on 1 year renewals. In other words the school can pull the scholarship after each season, with no repercussions. While if the athlete wants to leave and go play elsewhere he usually has to burn a year of eligibility. Now, you can say that's the deal they knew they were getting when they signed up. And that is true. But as Hawk pointed out it's not like they have another option. I don't think Clowney (or Spurrier) has handled the situation well. And letting his team mates down sucks. But the system is screwed up...and it's screwed up in the schools favor, particularly the big schools.
No...but every South Carolina fan knows the name...Jadeveon Clowney. Just like everyone at Clemson knows the name of Sammy Watkins. Just like every lawyer in Baton Rouge knows the name of Jeremy Hill. They go because they are winning but why are they winning? Causality...without those players who could jump straight to the next level...no one comes out. These players are bigger than the jersey. Without them...those Jerseys aren't sponsored by Nike, Under Armor, etc. Without them it's a see through high school jersey with South Carolina on in white stenciling.
I agree he doesn't deserve special treatment...but he will and does get it on a regular basis. I do think he deserves a little bit of a wide berth when it comes to the health of his body. Without it...the guy would lose out on a fortune...which he will prolly lose by the time he is 35...but that's besides the point. Those letters they sign...aren't worth the paper they are printed on. They lock players in...but allow coaches to roam free. That makes it a tool to keep these players from feeling to...free. No honor among thieves.
There are serious potential repercussions. There is now a big premium on graduating players that are not going pro. You start running players and they fail to graduate you start losing scholarships and even being able to participate post season.
Having said that a school should not be able to suggest, a student athlete would be better off transferring. If they do, then they should be docked a scholarship from the 85, or the student should not be forced to drop down in order to play the same season.
