Maybe it was because UL's men's basketball team hadn't been in that situation ... holding onto a lead. After all, the Ragin' Cajuns had only one other double-digit advantage all season.
UL had that type of edge several times Saturday night at the Cajundome, and didn't handle prosperity well down the stretch. But some clutch free throw shooting overcame three turnovers in the final minute, and the Cajuns held on for a 74-71 Sun Belt Conference victory over Florida International.
The Cajuns (4-12, 2-4 Sun Belt) led by 14 points both late in the first half and early in the second half, and still were in front by nine at 67-58 with 55 seconds left before things started going haywire for the hosts.
FIU (6-9, 1-4) got a key three-pointer from Johwen Villegas in between Elvis Lora free throws, those made possible by two Cajun turnovers, but two freebies by Willie Lago and David Dees provided a 72-68 lead with 13.4 seconds left.
However, Alex Galindo threw in a high-arching trey over UL's defense with 6.8 ticks left, and Rhett Hebert had to make two more free throws for the eventual winning margin. Galindo had a potential tying three-pointer bound away at the horn.
"On the plus side, we'd really never been in that situation, trying to hold onto a lead, and we didn't react well to it," said Cajun coach Robert Lee. "But we had guys that stepped up and made free throws.

In all, UL was 17-of-22 from the line, and needed every one of them.
"You saw that it was their older guys that stepped up at the end," said FIU coach Sergio Rouco. "We've got so many young guys ... only one guy that really played a lot last year, and when you are in league play you need that kind of experience."
Ross Mouton had 22 points and Dees 18 to go with 10 rebounds to pace the Cajuns, who won a second straight game for the first time this season. One of Dees' rebounds, part of UL's 45-30 board advantage, was a key offensive board with 26 seconds left after an Elijah Millsap miss.
UL also took its second straight league win after a 66-64 win over Denver on Thursday.
"We knew how another loss would feel to us," Mouton said, "especially with the mistakes we made at the end. With those slipups, we had to have guys step up at the end."
The Golden Panthers fell behind by double digits in the first half for the third straight game, with UL using an early 13-3 run to take a 16-8 lead. Moments later, Mouton hit a second three-pointer for a 19-12 lead, and another one with 19 seconds left in the half to provide a 31-17 advantage - the Cajuns' biggest over an opponent this season.
UL's previous largest advantage all season was a 13-point late-first-half lead in the season-opening 76-68 victory over Ouachita Baptist.
UL only shot 36.7 percent in the first half, but that was higher than a Panther squad that needed two late field goals to get over the 30 percent mark.
"We can't score 20 points in a half on the road and expect to win," Rouco said. "We finally started making some shots in the second half, but we've got to get to where we don't fall behind and have to come back."
FIU did come back, cutting the lead slowly until the big rally in the final minute. Villegas had 20 of his game-high 25 in the second half including five three-pointers, while Galindo had 16 of his 23 in the final half. Galindo also had 13 rebounds, almost half of FIU's total.
"The first half they changed up some and went to a zone," Lee said, "and that slowed us until Mouton knocked down a couple of shots."
Hebert had six straight free throws in the final 1:51, the middle two of which provided the 67-58 lead.
"We didn't take care of the ball at the end like we should have," Hebert said. "But we have guys that will step up and make shots. Every day, coach makes everyone make 20 free throws before we can leave. When we have to make them, these guys step up."
