There was a basketball player from Africa a few years back with a last name Bamalu (I know its not spelled correctly)

Didn't work out on the court, but name-wise, Kristian Lafayette had promise

You are thinking of Bryant Mbamalu. He was from Houston and one of Coach Marlin's first recruits. He improved greatly in his four years and was MVP of the 2014 SBC tournament.
