LAFAYETTE - Darryl Blappert has already helped resurrect one football program, and he thought it would be fun to do it again.
The 6-foot-6, 265-pound defensive tackle, a preseason junior college All-America pick this year at Pearl River in Poplarville, Miss., gave a verbal commitment to the UL Lafayette program and coach Rickey Bustle over the weekend.
Blappert, who will enroll at UL Lafayette in January and go through spring drills with the Ragin' Cajuns, had been recruited by Memphis, Temple, Marshall and San Jose State as well as getting inquiries from powers such as Nebraska and Oklahoma.
"The program there is kind of like it was at Pearl River," said Blappert, who became the Cajuns' 11th verbal commitment. "We came in there and they hadn't won in a long time, and the first year there we went 7-2 and just missed the playoffs. It was exciting being a part of that, and I kind of wanted to be a part of it again."

Blappert's team at Pearl River under coach Tim Hatton had its first winning season in several years in his freshman campaign, and this past fall Pearl River went 7-3, went to the juco playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons and won the South Division title for the first time in 15 years.
Blappert, a native of New Orleans who played his prep football at St. Amant High, was a big part of that success with 58 tackles including four sacks and two fumble recoveries, one of which he brought back 80 yards for a score.
He earned All-State and All-Regional junior college honors and was named as Pearl's Defensive Lineman of the Year.
"I played pretty much everything from end to nose," he said, "but the people there (at UL Lafayette) pretty much want me to play at tackle. They run the same style of defense we ran at Pearl River, so I pretty much know what's going on there."
Blappert's prep teams went to the Class 5A playoffs in each of his final two years under coach Bill Stubbs, and he was a second-team All-State selection along with making the New Orleans Times-Picayune's prestigious All-Metro squad.
Blappert is the eighth defensive commitment out of the 11-player group after visiting the campus one week ago.
"I liked the atmosphere," he said. "It was a real college campus with things to do, and I liked the staff. They seemed really enthusiastic ... I had talked to coach (Shawn) Quinn and coach (Carey) Bailey several times and coach Bustle once before, but that was my first chance to really talk to most of the coaches."

Blappert appears to be a great pickup in a desperately needed area. Way to geaux. :)

Historically (for schools used to this type of thing) some guys get last minute gitters and change their mind from their non-binding oral committments. For others it is the formality that seals the deal from a handshake that may have taken place way back when UAB was in town.

Louisiana, which has already signed five junior college prospects that will be a part of the team in the spring, received commitments from New Orleans-McDonogh 35 offensive guard Chris Clark (6-foot-5, 250) and Dallas-Skyline High's defensive tackle Travis Ferguson (6-2, 285).
Clark, a first-team All-District 8-5A selection as a senior, also received interest from San Jose State, UL-Monroe and McNeese State. His high school coach said he is academically qualified with a 3.9 grade point average.
"He likes computer science and they have what he wants," McDonogh 35 coach Wayne Reese said. "With what he wants out of school, they had the thing he wanted and he was happy."
Clark was a two-year starter for McDonogh 35 at guard and could project to play tackle in college because of his long arms and ability to add weight. He was also the district's shot put champion as a junior and also participated in the javelin and discus.
Ferguson's stock dropped in the eyes of some schools such as Texas A&M, TCU and Baylor after he suffered a broken ankle in Skyline's opening game of the season.
But Ferguson, his team's leader in tackles for loss and caused fumbles as a junior, repaid the loyalty shown to him by UL-Lafayette with his commitment after a weekend visit, Skyline assistant Derick Roberson said.
"They were the first one to offer him," Roberson said of Ferguson, who, according to Roberson, is academically qualified and ranks 44th in his senior class of more than 800 students. "And after the injury they stayed with him, while others schools dropped off of him. That left a lasting impression that they were committed to him regardless. In my opinion, they got a steal because the kids never takes a play off and is always going 100 percent."

Ferguson, a National Honor Society member, had scheduled visits to Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin and had offers from New Mexico, Texas-El Paso and UL-Monroe.
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA: Three more local/area football players have committed to play football for Southeastern Louisiana University next fall.
Kicker Hess Crockett of Catholic High and two St. Helena Central of Greensburg players, linebacker-running back Marcus Thompson and safety Robert Berglund, committed to play the Hammond-based Lions as they field a Division II program in 2003.
All three players said the recruiting efforts of SLU coach Hal Mumme played a key role in their decisions. Earlier in the week, Redemptorist receiver Josh Wilson announced he had committed to the Lions.
"I really like coach Mumme," Thompson said. "He came here to our school and started drawing things up on the board. When he did, he put me in the offensive backfield and I liked that."
Thompson is a 6-foot, 190-pound linebacker-running back who compiled 86 tackles and also rushed for 922 on just 87 carries, earning All-District 7-2A honors. Thompson said he also considered Southern University.
Crockett (6-0, 180) was an intregal part of Catholic's system the last two years. Crockett made 30 of 32 extra points, put 83 percent of his kickoffs in the end zone and made 5 of 7 field goals with a long of 38 yards. Crockett said he also considered Ohio University.
"I liked the idea of going to a place where I might get a chance to play four years," Crockett said. "Most guys only get to play maybe two years at big schools. Coach Mumme stressed that fact that I'd get the chance to prove I can play right away.
"I also like the idea of being in on a program that's starting. We (SLU players) will get the chance to be part of building a team."
Berglund (5-11, 175) had three interceptions for the Hawks last fall. In addition to crediting Mumme, Berglund said the fact that SLU is close to home was pivotal.
TULANE GETS TWO: The Green Wave went out of state to increase its commitment total to 16.
Quarterback Richard Irvin (6-2, 185) of Pasadena, Calif-Muir High selected Tulane along with defensive end Elijah Robinson (6-3, 255) of Camden, N.J.-Woodrow Wilson High.
UL-MONROE PICKS UP SAFETY: UL-Monroe added a commitment from Kilgore (Texas) High strong safety James Williams, who chose the Indians over North Texas, TCU and Memphis. He was a first team All-District 13-4A performer as a junior.-->
