Another group at the time was convinced it was done to appease the NCAA. Another was that the AD thought a black HC would recruit some of the better black athletes we weren't getting. Regardless, he's suing because of race. He was hired because of his race. He wasn't even close to being the best candidate available. This entire saga is pathetic. It's pathetic of Jerry.
