His deal is for one year. That tells me that they still hope to bring Rondo back. Elfrid will still play lots of minutes as Rondo is aging and saves his energy for the playoffs. If they did not think Rondo was coming back, they could have signed him to a longer term deal.

Rondo will be back plus they want to take Jrue off the ball a little more and they've lacked good depth at the PG spot for years. Elfrid will help them as he's better defensively than Rondo and obviously younger so he will eat up a lot of minutes for him.

I admittedly did not watch a lot of Suns or Magic games, but I thought Elfrid was pretty poor on defending the pick and roll when I saw him play.
Hopefully Rondo and Jrue can teach him the finer points of the position. I can’t wait to see him in a Pels uniform.
