UL's baseball team may have lost two of three games at Southern Mississippi during the weekend, but there's not much disappointment in Tony Robichaux's voice.
That's because the Ragin' Cajuns did a lot of things in the series that Robichaux knows are going to be important when UL gets into conference play - this weekend.
The Cajuns open Sun Belt Conference action at home Friday in a three-game home series against South Alabama at Moore Field. Before that, though, UL goes on the road tonight to face state rival Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. at NSU's Brown-Stroud Field.
UL (11-2) suffered its first losses of the season Friday and Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss., falling 7-4 on Friday and 1-0 on Sunday surrounding a 4-0 Saturday win.

"The bottom line is you don't ever want to struggle pitching and playing defense," Robichaux said. "That's what makes or breaks you. We got some good pitching over there and we played good defense after Friday."
UL gave up only one big inning the entire weekend, a four-run outburst in Friday's opener, and allowed only one run in the series' final 21 innings. Unfortunately, that came in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday when USM strung together three hits and pushed across a two-out winning run on a bloop single.
The Cajuns had won 10 straight before that series, but Robichaux said his squad needed that test before getting into the heart of league play.
"When you're winning 13-1, you can make an error and it's not going to come back and hurt you," he said. "But if it's zero-zero, you have to play what I call 'real' baseball, and that's what we have to get used to and get better there.
"Our hitters have to do a better job of making adjustments, moving runners and having productive outs when we're in that situation."
UL is probably in line for another test today even though the Cajuns took a 10-5 victory over the Demons (6-9) last week. Since then, NSU and coach Mitch Gaspard - a former UL assistant - took two of three games on the road against a highly-regarded Houston team, including a 6-5 10-inning victory Sunday.
"You know they're going to be well coached," Robichaux said, "and they're going to do nothing but get better because of that. That's good for us, because we want to play as high a level of competition as we can. They swung it well here and chased our starter, and we were fortunate enough to score some runs and pull away."
Sophomore lefthander Greg Wilborn (1-0, 7.71) is expected to get the starting nod for the Cajuns, making his third start and hoping to bounce back from early struggles in his last outing when Illinois touched him for five hits and four runs in the first inning.
Northwestern is expected to counter with junior lefthander Jason Grace (1-2, 7.41), who started last week's meeting between the two teams and allowed seven hits and three earned runs in four and one-third innings.
"We're at their place so we know it's going to be tough," Robichaux said. "We'll probably have some of our conference bullpen arms ready."
