UL opened its 2006 football season with a pair of games against nationally-prominent programs, and was popped twice at LSU and Texas A&M by a combined 96-10 score.
Florida Atlantic began its season with four straight road games at Clemson, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and South Carolina, and went 0-4 while being outscored 192-20.
Since then, neither team has lost.
"There are a lot of similarities in the teams we played early," said UL coach Rickey Bustle. "It's been a process of coming back and getting your feet back on the ground and playing like we're capable of playing."
"We never went into a funk in losing to those four teams," said FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger. "We knew we got experience and we learned the velocity and ferocity of the Division I game. Winning two in a row kind of validated that."

The Cajuns (3-2) have won three in a row and take that streak into Wednesday's Sun Belt Conference opener at Florida Atlantic (2-4). The host Owls already hold a league win, having beaten UL Monroe on the road two weeks ago.
The Cajun squad finished its Lafayette preparations Monday with a 90-minute practice, and is scheduled to work out at FAU's Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., this evening after their mid-day travel.
Wednesday's 6:30 p.m. contest will air on ESPN2, the only nationally-televised game this season with two Sun Belt teams.
"It's a great opportunity for our program and for FAU," Bustle said. "It's the only game on in the country, being on a Wednesday night, so it's great for our community and our program and great for recruiting. But we can't worry about those things right now. The game is what we have to focus on."

1.) Louisiana (3-2, 0-0) - Haven't played since last poll, but Houston's close loss at Southern Miss doesn't take anything away from the win one weekend ago. It's still a little early to make New Orleans Bowl reservations, but right now the Cajuns would be a favorite against every team in the league. Last week: First.
2.) Arkansas State (4-2, 2-0) - ASU won on a hail-Mary on the last play of the game at Memphis, but it wasn't a fluke. The Indians dominated their Conference USA opponent (100 more yards, a 10-minute time of possession advantage, 27 first downs). Maybe they are for real, and the game at UL on Nov. 25 might be huge. Last week: Third.
3.) Middle Tennessee (3-3, 2-0) - Should you drop during an open date? Only with the big win by Arkansas State. Middle has played two straight solid games despite losing to Louisville in one of those. And they're going to face a UL Monroe team that's now out of the hunt. Last week: Second.
<center><p><a href="http://www.theadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061017/SPORTS/610170354/1006" target="_blank">The rest of the poll</a>
<!--
4.) Troy (2-4, 1-0) - They're the team that put UL Monroe out of the hunt, and the Trojans have two more conference home games in their next two outings. Troy plays only one game between Sept. 30 and Oct. 28, so they should be rested up and healed up. Watch them closely. Last week: Fourth.
5.) North Texas (2-4, 1-1) - Four of the Mean Green's last five conference games are on the road beginning against a streaking Arkansas State squad Saturday. Will coach Darrell Dickey's heart attack be a galvanizing thread? Stranger things have happened. Last week: Fifth.
6.) Fla. Atlantic (2-4, 1-0) - Maybe Howard Schnellenberger was right, and FAU's murderous early schedule was good preparation. The Owls did go to Monroe and win, and they won at home last Thursday. But judgment's reserved until after Wednesday night. Last week: Sixth.
7.) Fla. International (0-7, 0-3) - The Panthers are going to have a tough time winning at Alabama in two weeks now that 18 players are suspended. Give FIU's people credit for saying the right things ever since Saturday because the same can't be said for Miami. The last five games on FIU's schedule will be the biggest character check in the league. Last week: Seventh.
8.) UL Monroe (1-5, 0-3) - They've been in every league game, but can't make a game-winning play. Who would win between FIU and the Warhawks right now? I still think it would be FIU, but that could change if more brawl-related penalties come down. Last week: Eighth.

Louisiana at Fla. Atlantic Wednesday (line UL -9) - Just by the numbers, this one shouldn't be that close. But giving up an almost double-figure spread in a conference game on the road is a risky proposition. I'm taking the Jerry Babb factor ... he didn't play much against FAU last year and the Cajuns lost. He'll play this year. UL 34-14.
Middle Tennessee at UL Monroe (line MT -4 1/2) - Every time they've needed to come up with a big play or a big win, the Blue Raiders have done it this year. Every time the Warhawks have done the same, they haven't. There's something to be said for knowing how to win. MT 27-17.

North Texas at Arkansas State (line ASU -11) - UNT has lost its three road games this year by a combined 107-23. The Indians should win, especially after getting its offense untracked last weekend at Memphis. If last week's performance becomes the norm, ASU may decide this league one way or another again. ASU 31-10.
LAST WEEK: 3-1 straight up, 0-3 against the spread. SEASON: 33-8 straight up, 16-20 against the spread.

When Florida Atlantic played Louisiana-Lafayette last season, quarterback Sean Clayton's only action was taking a knee to run out the clock at the end of the game.
Clayton, then the backup to Danny Embick, had watched Embick rally the Owls to a 28-10 win by scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
Wednesday, Clayton will be starting when FAU hosts the Ragin' Cajuns at Lockhart Stadium, and he hopes to lead the Owls to another win over Louisiana-Lafayette in a game with major implications in the Sun Belt Conference.
"They are a really good team, probably the front-runner in the conference," said Clayton, a junior whose improved play helped the Owls (2-4, 1-0) win their past two games.
In FAU's first three games, Clayton passed for 215 yards, with two interceptions and no touchdowns, and he ran 15 times for minus-7 yards.
In the Owls' past three games, Clayton has passed for 438 yards with one interception and four touchdowns, and rushed for 155 yards on 19 carries.

Clayton, who lost his starting job before the season opener at Clemson, and then won it back in that game, said he is settling into the job and that was reflected in his play.
"I am feeling a lot more comfortable and more confident, because I have proven to the coaches I am the guy and I don't have to worry about looking at the sidelines and seeing someone else warming up," Clayton said.
Clayton (6 feet 5, 225 pounds) also has proven to be an agile runner, which is why he was switched to tight end when he went to Michigan State after graduating from high school at Poland, Ohio.
But when it appeared he would have trouble getting playing time with the Spartans, Clayton got back in touch with FAU, which had recruited him through former assistant coach Christ Vagotis, who was raised in nearby Canton, Ohio, and still had contacts there.
"They were persistent," Clayton said about the Owls, "so I came down here and liked it. What's not to like about South Florida, other than the hurricanes?"
Clayton got two starts last season after Embick broke his thumb, but then lost out to redshirt freshman Rusty Smith for the starting job before the start of this season.
Coach Howard Schnellenberger praised Clayton for how he handled the demotion and FAU's 0-4 start.
"He's the guy that is the pressure valve. His performance will rise and fall on the play around him. The quarterback is always the guy that is berated or celebrated depending on how it is going," Schnellenberger said.
Right now, a win over the Cajuns (3-2) in a 7:30 p.m. game that will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 would keep everybody celebrating.
"This is the biggest game of our season so far. If we can win this one, it would help us with momentum for the rest of the conference schedule," Clayton said.
HEALTHY HANDS
Who Clayton throws to is cloudy. Starting wide receiver Frantz Simeon is questionable with a separated shoulder, as is Cortez Gent and Casey McGahee, who both have ankle sprains. Chris Bonner has missed two days with bronchitis. That leaves Avery Holley, Chad Wilkes and Conshario Johnson as the only healthy receivers.

Florida Atlantic may be without its top four receivers when they host Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday night as 8-point dogs.
After opening as high as +10 at some books, the line was dropped to 8 early Monday morning.
FAU listed Casey McGahee (ankle), Cortez Gent (ankle), Chris Bonner (illness) and Frantz Simeon (shoulder) as questionable for the game.
Simeon, FAU`s biggest deep threat, separated his shoulder in Thursday`s 32-7 victory against Southern Utah. No line was set for the contest.
McGahee, a senior, has missed the entire season with a sprained ankle.
Simeon and McGahee were listed as the No. 1 and No. 2 receivers to start the season, with Gent and Bonner listed as No. 3 and No. 4.
Gent, a speedy freshman, missed Thursday’s game and has sparingly practiced this week. He has six catches for 66 yards this year.

Bonner, also a freshman, has missed three straight days of practice with an illness. FAU officials would not elaborate as to what type of illness he is suffering from. Bonner has eight catches for 131 yards in ’06.
Freshman receiver Avery Holley, who scored his second touchdown of the season against Southern Utah, would be the likely starter against UL Lafayette. He took snaps with the first-team offense in practice Sunday alongside junior Chad Wilkes, who has started three games of the season in place of the injured McGahee.
"None of this is good," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger told the Palm Beach Post.
FAU is 2-4 SU, 1-4 ATS and has an O/U record of 4-1. UL Lafayette 3-2 SU, 2-2 ATS and boasts a 4-0 O/U record.

wished to say "whoaa.. this is a fun year.."
as we await the game wednesday. and make our plans... i wanted to encourage everyone to gather with a group to watch.. always much more fun i have found.. whether it be a friend's house or one of the many fine sports bars we have in the area.. do get out and cheer with those like minded..
still not 100% sure but am anticipating making a call to florida in the am to do the sportsnote's weekly gig with qb jerry babb.. am 100% sure i will be calling.. just not 100% that our "babb boy" will be answering (smiles)
on to victory and hope to see you out and about for the game.. (kickoff 6:30)
I just hope that our boys and coach are on their toes and don't overlook this team. They could potentially be very dangerous, especially since they'r eon a 2 game winning streak and opened up the season with some tough opponents. As a matter of fact, I won't even be completely comfortable with a bazillion point lead, at least not until the clock is down to zero. That being said, I think our boys are up to the challenge and will do very well. Here's to a good showing on National TV.
God Bless

This has been a popular topic and I have commented on it several times. I seem to have arrived a one final thought. We have never dominated this conference and our games have always been close. That may be changing, but I don't think the guys that have been down on the field losing games by a field goal over the last couple of years are thinking they can sleepwalk through their conference schedule. I think they also know that road games stack the odds and are difficult no matter the opponent.Quote:

Because I'm bored and being unproductive at work (slow day), I pose the following questions.
1.)What do you think about the FAU game? Realistically, what are our chances for a W? What will need to happen for us to get a W? What should we expect to see from FAU?
2.)Also, what is FAU saying about us (fans/players/etc...)? I have no access to FAU boards, etc.. and I was just curious.
Here's to a great game for the Cajuns on ESPN2. I will be obliging my LSU friend to let me come over and watch the game at his place (cuz I have no cable). :p
Peace and God Bless

One thing for sure, most of our starters will remember the game from last year. I doubt they will take this team lightly. I am certain coach has pleanty of film showing each and every player from last years game how many errors they made individually and as a team.Quote:

FAU receiver Simeon questionable for Louisiana
By Marcus Nelson
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic's receiving corps is in pain.
Frantz Simeon, FAU's biggest receiving threat, separated his shoulder in Thursday's victory against Southern Utah.
Simeon was listed as questionable by the school for Wednesday's game against Louisiana.
Also, senior receiver Casey McGahee has a sprained ankle.
McGahee and Simeon, the two most experienced receivers on the team, join freshman Cortez Gent, who missed Thursday's game with an ankle injury and is questionable Wednesday, and Chris Bonner, who is sick and hasn't practiced in two days.
"None of this is good," coach Howard Schnellenberger said.
No decision has been made to who will start Wednesday, but freshman receiver Avery Holley, who scored his second touchdown of the season against Southern Utah, took many snaps with the first-team offense in practice Sunday alongside junior Chad Wilkes, who has started three games of the season.
One word... (or maybe it's two)
UH-OH!!! .~.
Get our boy Babb on the phone tomorrow. I'll call in and talk to him.Quote:

Anything is possible, as the game is played! I, like many want the Cajuns to WIN and continue as they have played the last 3 games and even improve, and that is what it will take for the Cajuns to win.Quote:

Yeah, you don't think Schnellenberger is sandbagging, do you? Although a separated shoulder is pretty tough, I have heard of guys with "slight" separations playing. Same with twisted ankles.Quote:

GEAUX LOUISIANA!!!
My concern is how will the guys perform in a road game with virtually no one supporting them in the stadium. Our last two road wins, ULM last year and Houston a couple of weeks back, were games in which we had substantial fan presence in the stadium and that definitely helped the guys. They will have to encourage each other, especially when we run into some rough periods during the game. I generally don't make predictions as to the outcome of individual game and I am not making a prediction for this game, I am predicting how we react to the adversity we will face at some point will determine our fate.Quote:
