Re: Game Thread: Louisiana vs. App St.
We played a Top 30 team, on the road, to a 10 point loss.
App has beaten stAte by 26, Charlotte by 36 and South Al by 45.
2 teams have scored double digits on App, Penn St and us.
Nunez was off today. You guys can crucify him if you wish. I'll thank him for his efforts and continue to hope he wins a few more games for us. He's the best we got.
Re: Game Thread: Louisiana vs. App St.
Guys played hard.
I am never happy when we lose, I don’t care what the circumstances are.
But, if you can’t see this team is getting better every week, you don’t know what you’re looking at.
Proud of the effort. Proud of DLine and Corners especially.

Re: Game Thread: Louisiana vs. App St.
Defense played better, Hill & McCaskill are important to have. Manac comes back and it gets even stronger. DBs are getting better, Garror & Jacquet are playing smart & aggressive. We continue to take that bubble screen away on a regular basis.
The bad, we continue to struggle with the QB running, which Hansen can do a lot. We need more athleticism in general, but at LB specifically. Boudreaux is fine north & south, but is a problem wide and in coverage. Not sure we have a better option, just like at QB.
Nunez is our best option, but he isn’t instinctive back there at all. Our O line isn’t as good as advertised. It is above average, but I wouldn’t term it good.
Our offense is like a one pitch pitcher. If that pitch is working, all is good & it makes his other average pitches look better than they are.
This week will tell us a lot about this team. Under Hud’s tenure, we were an up & down team, because he relied on playing with emotion, which is difficult to do on a weekly basis. Nap is banking on preparation, which is easier to duplicate, but requires discipline.
Let’s see how disciplined we are.

1) Agree with you comments concerning the defense. Also the continued development of Riley and Moncrief.
2) Boudreaux has gotten better playing between the tackles, he does not have the speed to scrape. The problem is when we assign the QB to the safeties, the aren't making the plays either.
3) I agree Nunez is still out best option, but his problem is not setting his feet to throw because he doesn't have the arm to just whip it out to a receiver. Lewis has no feel for the pocket and is only effective outside of the tackle on set plays for him. As I said, we have no FBS QB on the roster right now. I had hoped Nunez could rise to the challenge of playing against a better defense this week, he couldn't get to ball to his play makers.
4) This week the plan is the same as it was for App. State, we must move the ball consistently, play sound defense and special teams, no turnovers. The difference this week is Hansen can beat you with his arm and legs. But Arkansas State's defense is not great against the run and not as good as App. State's.
The staff has already proven they can game plan well, let's see if they athletes will respond this week in front of the home crowd.
Re: Game Thread: Louisiana vs. App St.
Agree, our offense matches up better against St’s Defense, but the same is true for them. Think it is a shoot out.

We can talk about a 3 year rebuild until we are blue in the face, but today's game indicates to me we are 1 QB and a few more solid defenders away from challenging the top of the conference.
As for Nunez, it's not all of his fault, give the App. State defense some credit as well. But to say he was off is saying that he hasn't done similar things this season in other games. He is all we have, but hasn't been able to deliver the football to his play makers consistently this season. No one is asking him to carry this team on his back, but to be more consistent in managing the offensive game plan.
Re: Game Thread: Louisiana vs. App St.
T ... I have been one of the biggest voices on the 3 year rebuild, but let me clarify what I mean by that. I think we are 3 years away from competing for one of the top spots in the G5. As far as the Sun Belt, I had us at 6-6 or 7-5 at best. After today, I think we have a legit shot at the Western Title this season, and am not scared to go back to Boone in early December.
In one of my posts, I said to really wait to judge this team/staff until the 2H of the season. It wasn't a win, but the 2H of the season is off to a good start, without getting a win. Going on the road and putting that performance up is a good start. To make it impressive, would be to follow up with another strong effort, that results in a win against Ark St.
We absolutely should be competing for Sunbelt championship next season and G5 power in year 3.

Being 1 QB away is huge though. I don’t know how long it will take for Napier to get a QB up and going but it certainly could take more than a year.

A transfer would be huge until someone comes along more capable. At a minimum , he could be really good back up.

A transfer could help and we definitely need some depth next year. Counting on a true freshmen is a long shot. I agree with T, in our current QB assessment. Napier must make it the highest priority, his career will depend this, his ability to fill this critical position with an effective passer.
