That little addition on the home side in the north end zone was also part of the project to balance the east/west sideline seating.

It could be an optical illusion, or I'm just looking at it wrong but it seems like the 1980's addition was designed for a steeper grade and wasn't fully considering the bowl aspect.

You are partially correct. The original "seating capacity" was 24,000 (I think the exact number was 24,640). Later, they re-numbered the bench seats closer together and the the same configuration now "seated" 26,000.
As you mentioned, the expansion in the 80s to 31,000 was necessary to stay in 1-A because as an independent we had to have 30,000 minimum.
