My son played soccer 45 years ago. His generation grew up playing it, and yet, the attendance and tv viewership is only a small fraction of American football. If it ain't happened yet, I don't think it will.

It's not 45 years ago. College football is in the process of killing itself. Hispanics are popping out babies like crazy. US demographics are gonna be very different in 50 years. I stand by my opinion, and if in 50 years I'm wrong please come find me and put me down.

I hope that in 50 years I will know which one of us is right..... maybe in that parallel universe?

In 50 years they will say "in 50 years it will be a bigger sport than American football" and just repeat that every 50 years.

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
I think you will see more growth of american football in other parts of the world than you will see soccer here.
we are just beginning to bring the sport to other cultures and you can see the interest it is generating. we've had soccer here forever now, and have seen no real growth.

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
Boomer mentioned the Saudis investment in golf and whether it would extend to NCAA football.
I suspect the Saudis are more likley to invest in soccer than football.
They can own it while pulling athletes from football.

No real growth? You've got to be joking

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
Soccer in the United States is hotter and more popular than ever.
That isn’t opinion. It’s fact.

Some people just don't want to accept some things. In the last 30 years, we've gone from nothing to the current MLS which is now considered a major American sport.

They would understand if they would go to an ATL United, LAFC, or Austin FC match. The energy is UNRIVALED

EXCELLENT article!!
Things are building rapidly. We host the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino, Pulisic and the boys are going to make a big run.
I so wish we had a MLS club in Louisiana. Maybe some big donors will pump a lot of money into the Krewe?

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
I have more fun at a MLS game than any college football game that I've attended in the last 10 years. It's constant action and you can't take your eyes off of it. American football with its incessant breaks and timeouts is a buzz kill

I do know the MLS cup ratings were down almost 50% in 2024 from 2023. Not a good sign.

Here is a soccer question...why is mls cup in a postseason of the current season whereas most of the european cups arw a playoff conducted throughout the following season

The MLS is the top soccer league in America. The EPL is the top soccer league in England.
The MLS does a very American thing by having playoffs to determine its champion. The EPL simply names the regular season champion as their champion.
In Europe, there are many special tournaments that are conducted throughout their regular seasons. Each country will pause their regular season play to have tournament play between leagues across Europe. Yes, these tournaments are based on the previous year's final regular season standings in each country.
We have tournaments between clubs and countries here from North and South America. It's a little different than what they do in Europe.

Yes i realized it was different, thats why i asked.
So your "why" is because it is an american thing to have current playoffs?
If the growth were to continue wouldnt it need to adopt the same playoff/cup structure as europe?

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
On a global basis soccer is insanely ahead of every other sport. While it hasn't fully translated into the US culture yet it has made tremendous headway over the past 30 years.
A lot of things in play but soccer will eventually become a dominant sport here. The question is will there be anything left to college athletics at all. There really isn't another country where athletics play such a large role at the collegiate level.

Or this year, Inter Miami. Their away games had tickets sold that would rival some superbowls. But many teams had great crowds like Cincinnati, Miami & Charlotte and average attendance was over 23,000 which is better than NBA
