Yep the footprint is advantageous for the school and the fans.
The fans already there, and those traveling.

Right now $2 million of Louisiana's budget is from Conference TV money.
What would it be in the destination conference, then add or subtract what Louisiana's overall budget would be with the move.
TV money is virtually equal for the SBC and new AAC members. The old guard AAC teams are getting their previously agreed-upon payments. Once you include the SBC exit fees, I just don’t see justification.

Finally, we would have instant rivalry with Rice. Football game last year had A LOT of jawing back and forth on the field. Baseball series had that as well, including the fans. Actually, them being private would probably add to that rivalry.

Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
I agree. It's easier to build your fanbase in the AAC. Much easier travel to Memphis, Philadelphia, Houston, and DMV as compared to Huntington, Boone, Monroe, and Statesboro.
We also need something new to excite the fanbase again.
If the AAC falls apart, the Sunbelt will be there or we get our natural LA Tech rival by joining C-USA.
Make the move if invited.

Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
If new funds in a new conference are not there then they are not there, but you should never look at them from a one or two year view.
A 10 or 15 year view, after the existing teams make their grab is the proper view.
Exit fees are a one time on recurring blip that can be paid over time so they should "almost" not even be considered.
But if there is no TV money to be had after the dust settles, that should be considered.
-
Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
Y’all are nuts! The Football and Baseball are EXTREMELY better in the SBC. For the love of god avoid the new AAC at all cost.

I’m not worried about academic alignment. I’m worried about being in the most athletically competitive conference.
There is juice with TXST on the diamond. We just own them in Football so it’s not there. I’ll give you the alumni base in H-Town. That does hold some water.
Do you not agree that the SBC has a clear advantage heading into the ‘24 expanded CFP? If so, you must see the value in staying in the SBC.

great point, it would be nice if the ncaa stepped in and said no school can “move up” to P5 unless they are R1, and for those already in P5 if their academic rankings drop (set an amount of slots, maybe 75 spots? but certainly if they lose tier 1 or never had it) they get a warning and then are out if it continues.

No. I don't agree.
The group of UTSA/SMU/Tulane/Memphis/ECU/South Florida has just as good a chance of producing a Playoff team as does the group of UL/USM/stAte/MU/App/CCU.
There will NEVER be a clear favorite among the G5 conferences as to who produces a playoff team. There is just too much parity going forward. Schools that take care of their own business will have the best shot.
I have always felt that if we are not in a P5 conference, then our best home would need to be in a Division/Conference made up of the best/most important G5 schools in our region.
For us, that is Rice, SMU, Tulane and Southern Miss.

We can agree to disagree. Remember, SMU is all but out of the AAC as it looks like they are heading to the PAC.
As a side note, I’d personally rather be conference foes with LaTech than Tulane. Overall better athletics and I absolutely hate the Bulldogs.
IMO, top to bottom, the SBC is the strongest Football G5. But I respect your opinion as we both want what is best for the University of Louisiana.

What if I told you we can recruit Houston without Rice in our conference.

My thinking as well.
Worth it just for publicity sake.

All good points Mr. Boomer.
It definitely would not hurt to keep lines of communication open and ask for feedback, but I don't see anything possible here until we rebuild the stadium and get out season ticket sales up.

100%, Boom and I’m all for it! I mentioned earlier on this thread that unless we get a P5 invite, the SBC is the best possible option for Louisiana.

…..So we need state money as it was state funded and seems it would be some state monies for fixing or rebuilding…..We need local money like the 6 month sales tax to put in for our ACADIANA SCHOOL…..THEN ITS TIME TO CHALLENGE THE STUDENTS FOR THEIR VOTE ON A SMALL FEE! Let’s get us all in the project!

Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
I don’t know how to get a poll thread started, but I’d love to see how everyone feels about staying in the SBC or moving to the new AAC once SMU leaves. Assuming an invite is extended of course.

This will not be funded on the backs of students. Tuition is already $6,000 plus a semester! Time for community to step up. Time for University to get serious about athletics.

With all these moving pieces, sometime I wonder if we shouldn't just make a public declaration that we are going to be in the Big 12, then see what happens.

Running a poll is excellent idea. I understand and agree with your view the current version of the SBC is a good place to be. However we may see as much realignment, media money driven change over the next 20 years as we have the past 20 years. We're lucky the SBC stabilized and landed on its feet during the most recent big change. Its unlikely the SBC nor other conferences' membership will remain static for long in this environment. I'm under no illusion the SBC East schools could be 'Atlantic 18' schools down 10 years from now. Babb/Heisman said it best in a previous post, these are 20 year decisions. We need to be flexible and ready in case a better opportunity arises just like any other ambitious school.

Maybe just put up a big 12 banner and the flags of our big 12 colleagues

Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
I firmly believe that we are low-hanging fruit in the conference realignment discussions. Arizona State, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Oregon State and Washington State will eventually be part of the Big 12. We do not have the resources to make that jump. Mountain West leftovers will merge with PAC-12 leftovers. Oregon and Washington will go to the Big 10. We stay where we are. American is the only move we might have. Sorry to burst your bubbles.

Pac-12 TV contract will decide all of this. Rumor out there Apple is a likely landing spot. That would likely force Oregon and Washington to bolt

Re: If SMU Is Invited to Pac 12 . .
One thing no one has mentioned is leadership. Apparently, Aresco doesn't have the power and/or trust that he once had as AAC Commish. When you build a conference solely based on market size, this is what happens. Keith Gill has proven to be a dynamic, proactive Commissioner. This matters, imo.
Unless a P5 situation opens up for UL, I'm in favor of staying put, especially considering our budget crunch at the moment.
We can foster rivalries with LaNeck, Tulane and Houston outside of conference membership. That's where relationships and savvy scheduling come in handy.

This is a great point. And honestly there are good arguments for both. However, there are too many moving parts and unknowns before we could even consider that move, or even be chosen for that move. But one thing is true....in the meantime, we PUSH as hard as we can to elevate the program. Because regardless how it shakes out, we will have put ourselves in a prime position. We CANNOT just sit idly by and wait. No one likes stale bread. GEAUX CAJUNS!
