Anyone talking QB that thinks Hunter Herring won't be seriously in the mix when healthy is fooling themselves. If he were healthy this spring he would be right there in the conversation with Chandler and Ben.
Who is LL2, Lance Legendre? I don't think that happens for several reasons. 1) Coach Desormeaux has already stated it's going to be either Fields or Woolridge publicly, I don't think anything from the spring game changes that plan. 2) They've also stated Chriss is the future, he could very well get some looks in that role as a true freshman and play in 4 games without losing a redshirt. From what I've seen and heard of Legendre, he is not the type of person to accept such a role. Anything can change and I would be happy if he is here in the fall, but I seriously doubt it.
You may be right. I know Chriss was not here under Billy but Herring was the QB he spoke most highly of. I realize Chriss should still be in high school and this was his first spring practice here, but he was very slow in reading the defense and processing where to go with the ball. Hopefully that will come. It is possible he could be another Jordan Davis type that had all the physical attributes to play at this level but just never was able to adjust to the college game. Time will tell.
Don't worry, I'm sure the RPCA will have this QB stuff sorted out by the beginning of the season...
Hopefully the freshman is good enough at some point that people stop referring to him as “Zion” and/or “Criss”
The kid’s name is Zeon Chriss
Here's why I disagree with that. IMO, Des is being straight with his players. Let's assume for discussion, LL2's issue is with understanding the playbook and/or making on field reads. Des discusses that with him in their one on one discussions; "you need to improve in these areas before you can get on the field." Now LL2 can put in the work to improve in those areas or transfer.
Either decision helps the player and the team.
I don't know what you are disagreeing with? I never said anything about a post spring meeting with a kid. I simply said like most coaches I wouldn't have narrowed it down to 2 publicly. I would have simply left it wide open. What you tell a kid in a one on one is totally different.
IMO, it doesn't really matter what the coach says publicly. The players know who is getting the 1st team reps in practice and where they stand from that. Des could say it is wide open, but the players in practice know that it isn't. I think a coach being consistent on what they say in public and what is happening in private is the best way to earn the trust and respect of players and coaches.
Coach Des also said a decision won't be made off of one day, meaning the spring game. But, I look at it differently when it comes to talking about the QB position. It he believes the two guys he stated were probably going to be the starter publicly, he's saying it for a reason. These are the two guys that he considers leaders in the QB room and are doing the right things, and who he wants his younger QBs to emulate. While he didn't say anything negative about his QBs, he did say he liked the talent in the room. He did comment on Chriss during an interview on ESPN 1420. To me, it's not what he said about Fields and Woolridge, but what he didn't say about Legendre and leaving him out of the conversation.
Yes, it looks like LL2 didn't do enough to be considered for the starting role or even perhaps seeing the field this year. I hope he sticks and works on the areas that need improving.
If any of y’all listened to coach Leger’s interview with Foote he said LL2 can also we playing time at inside WR and/or safety…. He was saying how fast and talented the guy was and need to be on the field at some point… take that for what it is, but it looks like they have alternate roles for him if he isn’t in the mix at QB. Fields is the guy I believe because he has great moxy and intangibles, but most of all has special arm talent.
I think Fields is capable and I’d like to see him get the first shot (all things being equal). I think “special arm talent” is a bit of a stretch. He has a pretty good arm. When you say “special”…relative to what (or I guess I should say who)?
