WOW Great find RaginRash!!
That is like the ULTIMATE compliment.
Firstly, I think our O-Line is the least of our worrys, there were times we were blowen people off the ball. I didnt see the cajuns get this much protection in a while, and their were holes that we could have driven a school bus through at times. This is gonna be a special team. Anyway, yea, I also saw the entire game, and I do have it Recorded. Laters everyone.Quote:

By the way, Cox is terrible, I watch the entire game on Direct TV. The weather was horrible at my house and never lost a signal.

I just wanted to stop by and congratulated yall on a great game and good effort. Smothers is a great RB and Babb is a good QB. The boys in Vermillion are very well coached and conditioned. I want to wish yall luck against La Tech and I'll be rooting for yall. I was impressed w/the amount of USL fans that came; usually when we play a non-BCS/OOC team, there may be a dozen or so, but it looked like several hundred. Once again, best of luck and perhaps you may slip inti the New Orleans Bowl!!! (BTW, I think it should be called the Crecent City Bowl).
GEAUX CAJUNS!!!
I didnt mind it, it was a promise he had said he would fulfill. He had said before the game that he would give ER a series or 2, and you have to remember at this level, trusting in your coach is important. If the players had heard him saying that he was gonna give ER his chance to go in, and never did, what would keep him from saying hed do something for another one of the players and not come through on the promise. ER didnt hurt us/help us, so I believe theres no way to really hold this against him. The last thing is, it gave Babb a chance to look at the game from the sidelines and see what the defense was doing. Anyway, thats my thoughts.Quote:

Like I said on your forum, Im sold on yall. Im really a gamecock fan for sure now. While it would be easy to say that yall were having a bad night, and it was a fluke, like most BCS teams do when a team scares em, your fans gave us credit and basically said we came to play, and yall didnt. Just look at the class of these your fans, I feel proud for my school by reading your schools message board!
"Lousiana Lafayette gained the respect of our team tonight, and also our fans. So congratualtions to them, and especially their qb, wr, already mentioned, and also the rb, Smothers, I think his name was. There was a good back."
"Sorry dude but your guys were far from little. Your team was a lot bigger than I anticipated."
"I usually do this for teams that beat us but I just have to say congrats to ULL. They were not intimidated, came out and played us tough. Part of the reason I am a little shell shocked is because I thought we should have had a blowout. And the Cajuns had other ideas. Yall have a good ball club and should do well this year.
Congrats and good luck on the rest of your season."
"They are a stand up team. Sure did like when they all knelt after the game and prayed at the 50. The gamecocks then came out and joined them. Great team.....Great coach.."
"they played with a lot of heart i thought. they had a nothing to lose attitude that i respect. great game guys! i hope you get a few upsets this year, but i'm damn sure glad it did'nt come tonight!"
And this isnt what our own fans are saying, these are your fans. Like I said, reading your forum makes me more proud of my team than reading our own heh. Gluck for the rest of the year, finish 11-0 and slap someone around in fiesta bowl...Hey we can hope, better than the LSU Tiggers goin!

i didnt know about the pretense of the promise. i agree about the coach having to come through for ER. i like a man of his word.

:D This guy did very well last night. I was very impressed. On one drive in the second half, he had two sacks and a run stop for little or no gain. Did he start the game? I did not realize at the time he was a freshman. Look for good things from him!
He did not start, Shawn Williams and Daniel Taylor started at DT with Benson, Cutler and Delesdernier rotating in. Floyd, James, Hills and Bass rotated at DE. Ross, Stanley Smith, Fair and Calais (I do not remember seeing Norman but he may have played) rotated at LB. I think the coaching staff did a great job of rotating the front seven and keeping them fresh. Also saw Roberts and Jones at RS, Lamey and Simon at WS, Prater and Wendall Williams at FS. Fenton, Carter, Thomas and Spann at CB. That is at least 23 guys that saw significant playing time last night on defense. Of those 23 only 5 are seniors.Quote:

What's the status of George Benson and Haynes. How serious is Haynes injury. Also, I got that Mad Dog was 6'1" but how much does he weigh? Any other noteable new names from the game?
The o-line did have a good game(Don't want to jinx them for next week). One holding penalty. I talked to Brooks,Hodges,Harvey,Batiste,Cox,and Lloyd after the game and as good as I thought they did in a loss, they were all to a man not pleased at all they did not put any points on the board. Had an empty taste in their mouth. Coach Gibson has done a good job getting this group working together. The temp and humidity made me think I was in the SWAMP. Spent $30 dollars on bottled water(10). Chris Perrone's Mother had to go to First Aid at stadium to get relief, she is ok. Coach Bustle's brother in law(I think) had us a great barbeque spread. Also, there was a group of UL students that helped liven things up before and during the game, I hope they remember what good game it was. PREJUDICE RWCAJUN
RW, are those 6 the only offensive linemen who saw playing time against USC? I did not see any others in the game but thought I may have missed Chance or Perrone play.Quote:

Benson played against USC and played well (knocked down at least 1 pass). Did not see or hear anything about him being injured. Have not heard an update on Haynes but know he did not even make the trip to SC. I read on Delphi that Mad Dog weighs around 265 even though he is listed at 245, don't know what is up with that.Quote:

While we may look like and act like students, it has been 10 years since RaginDave and I was forcefully escorted out of a cheering section as a student... We will take that as a copliment though...Quote:

For all you who like to chat, RaginCajun77 has set up a nice chatroom at the URL below. Tried it out tonight and it works great. Will see you there for the Minnesota game (next out of town game) but some of you who have trouble with the internet feed may want to give it a try this Saturday.

I am pretty sure it was those six for this week. Brooks went out late in the game with cramps in both legs, he is ok today. I am sorry to Pirogue about being a student, made me feel younger too.
Looking forward to the game this weekend against yall. Good game against the Cocks last Saturday. I was hoping we would play Miami better than we did, but they are a great team.

New faces productive despite opening loss
LOUISIANA La. — New faces had a great deal to do with last Saturday’s solid showing by Louisiana at South Carolina.
Despite the 14-7 defeat, the Ragin’ Cajuns showed signs that they have taken steps to improve in coach Rickey Bustle’s second year.
First among those new faces was unheralded junior Travis Smothers, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons star Warrick Dunn who joined the program a week into fall camp.
Smothers gained 113 yards on 19 carries, including a 36-yard escape, to become just the sixth back in Cajun history to exceed 100 yards on opening day.
With his spark, the visitors rushed for 138 yards against their SEC foes. That’s more than double last season’s average of 61 per game and more than all but one game in 2002.

Moving from Baton Rouge to Tampa to be with his brother (then with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Smothers lost ground academically and played just one year of high school football.
But he had enough speed to win the state 200-meter dash title in Florida and headed for junior college. Dunn’s connections with Cajun running backs coach Brian Jenkins led to a tryout with UL.
“I told Brian he could play, and he took my word for it,” said Dunn, who was on the sidelines Saturday night to offer his support.
“Travis came to us a little bit late,” Bustle said. “You can stand right next to him and not even know he’s around, he’s so quiet. But he gave us a spark in our early scrimmages and he’s someone who can make people miss.”
The Gamecocks will attest to that after Smothers helped the Cajuns to a balanced 272-yard night compared to 326 yards for South Carolina against a spirited Cajun defense.
Also due for praise was a UL offensive line that came under fire in 2002 but has clearly gotten stronger this fall.
“The offensive line did a nice job of opening up some holes,” Bustle said. “And, for the most part, they gave us time to throw. I was really proud of them.”
Another new face was redshirt freshman quarterback Jerry Babb, who benefitted from that protection and was solid with 12-of-25 passing for 134 yards. Babb called audibles at the line and generally ran the team well as the leader for all but one series.
“It’s hard to start your first game as a redshirt freshman, much less against a team like South Carolina in one of the best atmospheres around,” Bustle said.
“We had a good game plan going in,” Babb said. “The coaches did a good job of preparing us. There wasn’t much that we didn’t expect.”
Yet another new face was freshman defensive back Michael Adams, whose block of a field goal at the end of the first half produced a 7-7 halftime tie when Patrick Lamy returned the carom 89 yards for a touchdown.
“We came in here with winning on our minds,” Adams said. “This is just going to step our game up a whole ’nother notch. We felt good playing with these guys.”
Adams is trying to find a place in a developing Cajun secondary, which had its moments with crucial hits and last-second deflections.
“Some of the plays they were making, you’re going to see on Sundays,” Bustle said of the NFL-quality efforts.
“South Carolina is a good team, and we hung with them,” Lamy said. “This gives us a lift. We know we can play with good teams.”
Bustle, a South Carolina native and former Clemson player who still has numerous family, in-laws and friends in the area, was drained afterwards.
“This about wore me out,” Bustle said. “About 12:30 this afternoon, I had 21 people in the (hotel) room, all in the family. It’s been good, but I’m glad it’s over.
“I’m ready to get on with it.”
That process starts today, when the Cajuns begin drills for Saturday’s home opener against traditional foe Louisiana Tech, designated as a Sun Belt Conference game.
CAJUN CLIPPINGS — Reserve snapper Marshall Delesdernier filled in on the defensive line in the second half and played well with fives tackles (three for losses), two sacks and a forced fumble ... defensive tackle Kendrick Haynes (knee) missed the trip, as did safety Jamal Smith, causing scrambling by the defensive coaches ... only three of 12 Cajun foes won their openers — South Carolina, Houston (48-14 over Rice) and Minnesota (49-10 over Tulsa).

LOUISIANA La. -- Great start, but now what?
That's the question facing Rickey Bustle and his University of Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns this week in the aftermath of their impressive showing in Saturday's season-opening loss to SEC member South Carolina.
The Cajuns, overwhelming underdogs, had Gamecock fans on the edge of their seats and the outcome of the game very much up in the air until the final play before South Carolina pulled out a 14-7 victory.
"We played hard, we played well," said Bustle, beginning his second season at Louisiana. "Moral victories, I'm not in to those. I told them (Cajuns) if we sit on what we did tonight and don't come out Monday ready to go (we're in trouble) because we're getting ready to play our first (designated) conference game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday."
For a few hours Saturday, Bustle nonetheless basked in the knowledge that his Cajuns stood up to the challenge and didn't fold under adversity.
The Cajuns suffered back-to-back turnovers on their first two possessions -- three overall -- conjuring up thoughts of 2002 when they committed 10 turnovers in losing their opener to Texas A&M.
But this time, the Cajuns didn't succumb.

Special to The Advocate <!--
"There were times when this could have gotten away from us, but the defense always stepped up with a stop or a turnover," Bustle said.
Defense. Offense. Special teams. There was praise enough for everyone afterward and Bustle doled it out.
"It was good to see our running backs get open a little bit and make some yardage and I was really pleased with (quarterback) Jerry (Babb) playing in his first game," said Bustle. "And our defensive football team just played their hearts out ... all the kids did and I couldn't be more proud of them."
The Gamecocks, who outgained the Cajuns by only 54 in total offense, got a 7-yard touchdown run by Kenny Irons with 1:38 to play in the third quarter to snap a 7-7 tie and left it up to their defense to make that stand in denying UL its elusive first victory over an SEC opponent.
The Cajuns are now 0-46 against SEC competition, but have come within seven points of victory in each of their last two games against those teams.
From the performance of Babb, a redshirt freshman making his first start, to the running of newcomer Travis Smothers (113 yards), to the play of the defense led by James Roberts (10 tackles), David Prater (seven tackles) and Marshall Delesdernier (two sacks) to the play of special teams and Patrick Lamy (89-yard blocked field goal return), Bustle saw improvement and encouragement.
Smothers, younger brother of NFL great Warrick Dunn, was especially impressive, becoming the first UL player since Jerome Coleman in 2001 to rush for more than 100 yards in a game.
Smothers, who didn't join the team until the second week of fall drills, carried 19 times for his 113 yards, reeling off a 36-yard run in the process.
"I didn't know he had that many (yards)," said Bustle. "I was really pleased with (running game) because our offensive guys have worked hard and they haven't had maybe the same opportunities because they were banged up so much early. It was good to see us opening up some holes for our running game because we need to be able to run the ball to take pressure off our passing game."
That passing game accounted for 134 yards, all by Babb on 12 of 25 passing. He was intercepted once.
"I was pleased with Jerry. That's always tough to start your first game in front of a crowd like this (82,227)," said Bustle. "He showed a lot of poise and did a good job."
And the defense?
"Our defensive staff did a great job ... our whole defense played their hearts out. They made some plays like you see on Sundays out there a couple of times in that end zone. We've got a little more depth on that side so we're able to substitute a little more people."
Bustle is hoping Saturday's performance will act as a springboard to a successful season.
"If we take this game and come out Monday to get better, I think we'll be all right," he said.
