LOUISIANA La. — It's almost a shame that Louisiana's Ragin’ Cajuns were in shorts for Thursday’s practice.
Preseason drills have been conducted largely in hot, humid conditions, with the heat index over 100 degrees.
But Thursday, as coach Rickey Bustle conducted a final day of work before today’s flight to Columbia, South Carolina, it was moderate and breezy with a threat of rain.
It’s a shame to waste such a mild day on light drills.
Regardless, the Cajuns put the finishing touches on the game plan for the 2003 season opener at South Carolina.
They even took the offense down the tunnel to Cajun Field to run plays while noise blared over the sound system. The idea was to simulate the noise the Cajuns will face at USC’s 80,250-seat Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.
When the Cajuns opened the 2002 campaign at Texas A&M, they were greeted by 75,087 fans and promptly served the Aggies a staggering 10 turnovers in a 31-7 defeat.

South Carolina doesn’t have the kind of tradition of A&M, but protecting the ball remains a priority if the underdog Cajuns are to spring an upset of the Gamecocks.
A solid start would be another big step, since UL was outscored 113-26 in the first quarter last season.
So the checklist, as for any underdog, includes poise, protecting the ball and setting a combative early tone to the game.
If, for example, the Gamecocks ignore the warnings of ever-cautious coach Lou Holtz and enter the opener looking ahead to next week’s matchup with nationally-ranked Virginia, a brisk early punch by the Cajuns could rock them back on their heels.
And it’s often one of the hardest things in sports to recapture lost momentum, momentum they would own from the start from their home crowd.
One hurdle is that redshirt freshman quarterback Jerry Babb will be facing a Gamecocks defense that is part mystery for the Cajuns, a group switching from a “33’’ look to a four-man front in 2003.
“There are things you put in, and we’ve exchanged film,” Bustle said, “but it’s hard to tell what they’re going to do defensively.
“You do the best you can. You get a few looks on both sides of the ball and try to prepare your kids for what they may see.
“We don’t know exactly who their personnel are. We know where some good players are and we read what’s been said about what they’re trying to do, but it’s hard to know exactly where you can attack.
“With us not having film and then not having film (on Babb), they may not know what we’re going to do, either.”
As always, Bustle will try to get an edge by using some of his best talent on special teams.
“We’ve had some practices where most of it was special teams,” said Bustle, who saw how well that emphasis worked at Virginia Tech. “We’re going to use a lot of our starting players on those (kicking) teams, and it’s not going to matter where you play.
“We’ll let guys rest on offense or defense.”
That’s why players like Fred Stamps and Bill Sampy are counting on plenty of special teams action.
“There’s no place you can turn a game around quicker than in the kicking game,” Bustle said.
It’s a homecoming for South Carolina native Bustle and his family, but the party would be much happier if his Cajuns get the season off to a poised, upset-minded start.

Gamecocks continue preparation for Saturday's season-opener
Head coach Lou Holtz met with the media Thursday afternoon for the final time this week ahead of Saturday's season-opener against Louisiana. He offered the following comments after practice:
(on preparing for game day)
"We have had good preparation and I think we are anxious to play. I think that in the next 48 hours our legs will bounce back. There is always that uncertainty in the first ballgame and that excitement that you look forward. You always go over in your head "have we covered everything'. I think our coaches have done a good job preparing this team."
(on personnel)
"It looks like Josh Brown will handle place-kicking chores and will probably start out as punter as well. I think there is a better togetherness with our offensive line this year. Lance Laury has done a few more things the last couple of days and could possibly play Saturday. Along the defensive interior line we will start Darrel Shropshire and Preston Thorne but we will play a lot of people there. Unfortunately, Eric Stroman will have to have surgery again on his foot and we do not know how long that will keep him out. I have nothing new to say about Charles Silas."
Injury update: DL Eric Stroman reinjured his left foot on Wednesday and as a result will require surgery Friday morning by doctors Angus McBryde and Jeff Guy to have a screw inserted in his foot. The timetable for his return is undetermined.
South Carolina opens its 110th football season at home Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette. The game is a sellout with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

I'll give you some input, you completely missed the ball regarding our 'backers. Sure Hurley and Slay will be out but with the depth we have at that position, it IS NOT a major concern.
Now, if we were playing Georgia or Tennesse, I would be worried.
Since they (ULL fans) will not respond, I'll give it a shot. They have a reciever, Stamps(?) who is the real deal but Dunta will be on him like a blanket. Other than that I really don't see them moving the ball on us aside from a big play or two.
I think their D is OK but with our Oline out weighing them by an average of 45 lbs per man, I really don't see them stopping Irons, Summers, Turman or DP for that matter. I don't think they are gonna get alot of pressure on DP either.
Add to that, our guys have a sour taste in their mouths after the way last year ended and are eager to show everybody that last year was a fluke.
Gameplan? We are gonna make them try to beat us on the ground by shutting down their passing game. They will not be able to run on us.

And I hope all who are traveling have a safe trip and an enjoyable time in Columbia.
Howdy Cajuns!!!
I want to repeat 24/7's sentiments on wishing yall a safe trip to Columbia for those who are going. If yall are going to tailgate, I want to smell shrimp/crafish boiling, boudin, etoufee, REAL gumbo, etc!!! The reason I say real gumbo is gumbo here in SC is red, and I prefer a dark roux gumbo. Being a native of Texas, I know a little about the fine cuisine that comes from Louisiana.
I want to say by no means am I looking past La-Lafayette (as I remember as USL growing up). I remeber what yall did to Texas A&M in 1996 and I don't want that to happen to USC either. (I grew up an A&M fan as a youngster in TX). Anyhow, best of luck, no injuries and do well in 2003!!!
There will always be room in this world for a SouthernGent. But come on, a red roux? The reciept must have been some mean trick played on a Carolina fan by some Tigger from Baton Rouge.
"Alright guys.............what are your strengths and weknesses?" I don't post often, but since I see no reply let me tell you, I don't know of any strengths. UL lost 36 players from last year. The only experienced players on offense is at pitch and catch and the experienced player at QB is coming off Tommy John elbow and is second string. The receiver can catch but we don't know if the quarterback will get him the ball.
On defnse we have experience at linebacker but they didn't play last year. You have to go back two years to find the experience that they have and that was with a different coach. So that is our strengths, I don't know if we have any weaknesses.
I just left the airport here in Columbia. Just wanted to let ya'll know your team has arrived safely.
If any of you are coming to Cola Town, I hope you have a safe trip as well.
Good luck tomorrow night. Hoping for an injury free game.
Much obliged 1st and Goal. You are truly first rate.Quote:

Jamal Smith is out for the year. Let's hope he can take a medical redshirt and come back next year.
I dont have the vocabulary to express how much that sucks!

1ST AND GOAL.............I hope you are right about it not being a major concern. I know we have some depth but we do have a walk-on LB starting his first game and two of our best are not playing. I would say that is a little cause for concern. These guys are gonna try and run it down our throats and we better be ready to stop it. With a frosh QB, I expect to see a lot of pounding away from the back field. JMHO
strength.. the head coach
weakness.. hasn't been here long enough
last time i was in your stadium was to watch tim couch and the wildcats.. (97 or 98.. slipping memory..grins) it was an impressive place, plus the crowd size was unbelievable as this was even before yalls recent success.. since the arrival of lou..

I have always found it interesting that a fan of one program, which "could care less" about another program, actually finds the time to compile hours of research into 1000 words or more about the program he could care less about.
