When it comes to defense, UL's football team has suffered through an identity crisis at times this season.
The worse experience came in a 51-21 loss at Southern Miss to open the season. The Cajuns allowed USM to gain a school-record 633 yards, including 427 rushing, in the win.
Fortunately for UL, its young defense that starts only two seniors has improved over time.
After allowing an average of 34.7 points and 458.5 yards in their first six games, the Cajuns have given up only 21.5 points and 302.5 yards in wins over Arkansas State and Florida International.

The defensive improvements have helped put UL (5-3 overall, 4-0 Sun Belt) atop the conference standings. Now the Cajuns can become bowl-eligible by beating UTEP (3-5, 3-2 Conference USA) at 6 Saturday night at Cajun Field.
"I honestly think it goes back to the way we have been practicing," linebacker Daylon McCoy said. "A lot of guys have been watching extra film, doing extra lifting and just practicing a lot harder.
"We put a lot of emphasis on getting to the ball and practicing fast."
UL got to the ball plenty of times each of the past two weeks.
On Oct. 18, the Cajuns slowed Arkansas State's potent offense in a 28-23 comeback win. The Red Wolves finished with two turnovers and a season-low 100 rushing yards - 146 yards below their per-game average at the time. They entered that weekend ninth in the nation in rushing and averaging 35 points per game.
UL also broke up seven passes despite playing short-handed. Starting linebackers Brent Burkhalter, Grant Fleming and Richard Brooks all missed the game. Burkhalter was dismissed for violating team rules before the ULM game on Oct. 4. Fleming suffered a season-ending knee injury against ULM. Brooks tore up his knee at North Texas on Oct. 11. Starting strong safety Derik Keyes was limited with a deep thigh bruise.
In his second start of the season, McCoy made seven tackles (including two for loss), one sack and one fumble recovery and was named the Sun Belt's co-defensive player of the week. In the fourth quarter, his sack on second-and-6 pinned the Red Wolves near their own goal line and ultimately led to a punt.
UL scored on the ensuing series to take the lead for good.
The inspired defensive play continued in last week's 49-20 win over FIU. The Cajuns allowed a season-low 270 yards, forced three turnovers and stopped the Golden Panthers on 3-of-10 third-down conversions. The 20 points allowed tied a season-low total.
"The defense played hard, the defense played fast and most of all they played physical," running back Tyrell Fenroy said. "They came out and smashed the offense in the mouth with everything they had.
"That (defense) is where it all started."
Indeed.
With the game tied at 14 early in the second quarter, McCoy forced a fumble by FIU running back A'Mod Ned. Free safety Gerren Blount picked up the ball and returned it 22 yards to give the Cajuns a 21-14 lead.
On the next Golden Panther drive, Keyes picked off a Paul McCall pass and ran it back 63 yards before getting tackled at FIU's 4. Two plays later, Fenroy scored on a 3-yard run.
UL scored the next three touchdowns to push its lead to 49-14 late in the third quarter.
Holding a big lead, the Cajuns went with their back-ups in the final quarter. The Golden Panthers gained 97 of its 270 yards in the last 15 minutes. That included a 95-yard scoring drive with 5:01 left.
Some more good news: Most of UL's young defense will return next season. Keyes, defensive tackle Lanier Coleman and linebacker Antwyne Zanders are the team's lone senior defensive starters. But Zanders can get another season back if he completes 80 percent of his coursework by the end of the academic year.
"Great practice pays off, that's all I have to say," said McCoy, a sophomore who had a game-high 10 tackles. "We have had some good practices over the past few weeks."
That's a drastic change from the early season struggles.
UL got burned for 45 points and 470 yards in a loss at Kansas State and 35 points in a narrow win over ULM. The Cajuns also gave up 528 yards in a win at North Texas.
While UL is middle of the pack in most overall defensive categories, the Cajuns are second in the league on third-down defense at 35.1 percent. In conference games, UL is first in third-down defense (27.8 percent), so the stops are coming at the right times.
The Cajun defense will be challenged by UTEP, which has topped 30 points four times this season and has one of the nation's top young quarterbacks in Trevor Vittatoe. The sophomore has thrown for 1,895 yards, 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions for an offense averaging 33 points per game.
UL coach Rickey Bustle remains confident in his defense.
"They are doing a great job of covering their responsibilities and covering their gaps," he said. "They understand that they need to do their job and not worry about making plays for everyone else on the field.
"We are challenging the ball down field and not giving up the big play."

This is great. I hope these things are publicized heavily. Fenroy being nicknamed the T-Train with the train horn during the game along with this, although people may not believe it, will help with recruiting. Just imagine a RB prospect in the crowd hearing the train horn every time Fenroy busts one thinking "that could be me." I'm not for recruiting "me" guys, but to make it in D-1 football you have to have some kind of arrogant chip on your shoulder.
this is getting old now
Hey its working. Why change it now?

If I were Dr. Savoie, I'd put out a challenge to students- Fill the red zone (and I mean FILL- every seat taken by a student or a student escort ticket) and you get your free tailgating back.
I agree with others who stated that students have NO idea how lucky they are when it comes to free admission to sporting events at the university. Even student escort tickets are a complete bargain. When I was an undergrad back in the late 80s, student escort tickets cost 5 bucks. Today, they cost only 8 bucks.
Here's what the students aren't telling you.........
Student tailgaiting IS free.
The entire east side of the stadium is reserved for student tailgaiting on a first come-first served basis.
The moaning and _____ing is coming from the areas that have been used by students, but were available to everyone on a first come first served basis.
The problems arose when folks started showing up to claim those spots before the time set up by the university, which was causing a cluster.....
In retrospect, the administration agrees that they should have done this prior to the start of the season.
But this business of screwing the poor poor students is bogus. They still have the whole east side of the stadium. And, it's free.
Southeastern New Mexico State @ EL Paso (the're so far away from Austin they can't still be considered Texas, can they?)
I'm still deathly afraid
