Coach John Szefc 2003-2008

... for the 8th straight year the sportsnote radio show is lucky enough to have a weekly segment with an assistant baseball coach.. once again, John Szefc going into his 6th season with the Cajuns will be joining us to alert all what is going on with the team..

after a few years of his segment being on wednesday's.. we are moving back to our original day of doing his segment on monday's.. i like this as it will enable us to talk about the past weekend's games with the hit's and plays still in our mind and the dirt still in our jocks.. (tee-hee)

today is his 1st at bat (whoaa the cliches are striking out, ey? grins) John will be with us at 2:05 for a few minutes as the Cajuns will be on the field getting ready for the opening pitch.. only 11 days away as they will be traveling to San Antonio to take on Army.. and the 1st home game being the following week.. Fri, Feb 29th vs Southern Miss

seriously things can and do get murky when looking back in time.. i came up with the 8 in that i think i had wade on for 2 years.. and this will be john's 6th year with the cajuns.. hence the 8.. if only 1 year with wade before he went to tech then only 7.. and if true.. won't be the first time i would have to apologize for no memory.. i'm just glad i got the ph # right.. (friday's show reference)

ps. although, i thought it was questions for John, not me (chuck-elzzz)

Will Coach Szefc be on at the same time every Monday @ 2:05? Or will it just depend?

maybe not quite so early, yesterday was unusual because they had practice at 2:15.. which (2:15) should be the normal time for him to be on the show every monday, give or take a minute or two.. thanks

I love Coach Szefc. What a great guy he is! He just says it like it is, no fooling around. He cracks me up. Those of you who do not know him should really go shake his hand one day. Tony has done a great job hiring outstanding coaches who are also quality people.

Thanks for the audio Turbine. I hope you can continue to post those for us in case we can't listen live. I wish ESPN 1420 had podcasts.

got off the phone with john about an hour ago and tony has asked him to "pinch hit" for him with a speech i think he said at the petroleum club.. so the good news is that we will get to bug him after the game friday vs army..

no doubt about it, i may have to type a tad "clearer" .................................. nahhh (grins)

hey dad2, coach szefc and the sportsnote have been able to show their flexibility this week.. having moved from monday (funeral) to wednesday (speech for tony) til (God willing) i call him friday afternoon.. they will have 1 game under their belt, so it should be pretty good timing for a "radio" visit

ps. i didn't hear tony

okay cajun baseball fans.. less than 2 hours til 1st pitch.. i like the day game !

in any event, write down all your questions about the army game, as coach szefc is scheduled to answer his phone during the sportsnote and review and preview the the games in san antonio ...

Ask him whether or not he thinks Army has an unfair advantage with their rifles and humvees.

Also, TTUs macot has pistols, so for two days in a row, we'll not only have to worry about opposing hitting and pitching, but also their weaponry.

Question:

I have noticed that over the last few years we strike out a lot and that our hitters are usually taking a strike or two before swinging. Is part of the hitting philosophy to be very selective while looking for one pitch? Do you think this makes the hitters tend to be less aggressive when they do get a pitch to hit?

He said, and I'm paraphrasing, "That's a good question. Actually, in most situations, our philosophy is just the opposite. With the exception of our leadoff hitter of the game, and possibly the leadoff hitter on an inning with a new pitcher, we tell our guys to swing early. We don't want them getting in a hole by looking. The problem is that philosophy is one thing, actually getting your players to execute that philosophy is another thing. That's where the problem has been. These guys are still trying to get their eyes used to the velocity of the ball and picking up the spin on pitches like a hard slider. It's almost impossible for these guys to see the spin on a hard slider at practice or in intersquad scrimmages. They just have to get adjusted early on in the season. Hopefully it won't take them long to warm up."

That's pretty much what he said regarding your question. Hope that helps.

great re-cap.. couldn't (really .. grins) have done it better myself .. he also added he hoped if anyone asked any of the players that they would say that was the hitting philosophy.. (be aggressive and not get behind in the count)

ps. on a lighter side.. was i the only one who heard jay walker say that he and scott farmer could beat, a specific player, in a race? (big smiles) .. or at least come close? jay says i heard wrong

I may have that lighthearted exchange recorded . . . my recollection of the comment is the race would be close with a specific player winning . . . but not by much.

It all goes back to a certain coach saying a certain player had his jeans . . . his running jeans. :)
