Second, outside of one LEGENDARY day last year in the conference tourney and a pair of outings this season against SWAC teams, there is 50 innings of data over the last few seasons that give anyone who pays close attention pause when seeing that Marshall is the listed starter in (like most recent ones have been) the biggest game of the year to this point.
If this information is correct, hopefully it’s a repeat of the 2000 Super Regional when Coach Robe went with Andy Gros out of nowhere and came up smelling like roses.
The coaches are certainly more in tune with the dynamics of the team than we fans are, so we have to trust that they know what they’re doing.
For all practical purposes, with a pitcher here this long, you can find stats and a position which would effectively eliminate him as a pitcher for Louisiana.
I gave a number of rational reasons why the coaching staff may have made that decision. They remain rational no matter how hard you dig into the weeds and attempt to make them not relevant.
The only test that will answer all of our questions will be his performance if he starts tonight.
Then we will all know. Without that experiment, its nothing more than a discussion topic.
I have always tried to put forth a position on this board that supports the decisions by staff and players in each instance.
Support Louisiana, its players and coaches.

You been right, lately. Hoping you right again. And hoping you're feeling the same for the entire weekend... ;-)

Yes you gave reasons why you think the staff may have made this decision. Your opinion that they are “rational” aren’t supported by the data (on the field results). Whether or not you choose to believe that is up to you.
And yes, his performance tonight will determine whether or not it was a good decision, and a “discussion topic” is exactly what it is…hence a discussion on a message board.
I think my track record on here with regards to supporting the staff and players is as strong as anyone’s. But when Coach Deggs preaches having his starting pitchers “get us off to a good start” and preaches “limiting freebies”, then chooses to start a guy who’s been as combustible as any pitcher on the staff for his entire career, and issues more walks per inning than any pitcher on the staff…I think it’s fair to question the decision. There’s no “digging in the weeds” involved, the results are the results, and over a pretty large sample size.
Again, this staff knows WAY more about their guys than anyone on this board does, and this decision may (hopefully) look genius later on tonight. Marshall has had a few great moments in his time here, and I think every Cajuns fan is hoping that he has another tonight. Go get em Blake!
And Geaux Cajuns!

I think the plan here is to tell Blake that the conference tournament starts today with the opener against Georgia Southern ... and that our at-large bid is at stake ... and that we will also let him pitch Saturday and Sunday as long as he has something left in the tank.

There it is! We're good to go.
I hope G.Southern laid down a fresh can of blue spray paint on that chain link fence they call a ballpark.
While on the ballpark subject, D1 has us in the elite 8 ncaa baseball stadiums.

Yeah, pregame at gnats landing, and if you want bourbon over the weekend make sure to pick it up prior to crossing the county line.

Re: Georgia Southern series ...
Josh Alexander, Zach Storbakken, Brendan Moody, & Colton Ryals are no longer listed on the roster

Re: Georgia Southern series ...
hate to see anyone go, however that is one less person that CMD will have to try and get bats for the rest of the way . . .
the other three have contributed little this year and do not foresee that they would have through the end of the season . . .

From the outside looking in, appears they are trying to find the hot hand and ride it as long as possible throughout the series.
The road vs home weekend pitching numbers have to be astronomically different so I get it. Yes the competition has been different but not this much.
Would imagine they’re trying to find 4-5 guys to piece it together. Clearly will need more offense than normal. Still think they have it in ‘em.

Re: Georgia Southern series ...
I think we need to hit the ball very hard today in some empty spots and then run as fast as we can around the bases without getting out. Lots of times. Then, as long as our pitchers miss a lot of bats a lot of times while keeping the ball in the strike zone, we have a good shot of winning.

Yeah I’m starting to think that MAYBE, with the (seeming) dissension with the team this week, maybe Marshall is a senior leader and being given the chance to lead his team into the (now) biggest series of the season.
Whatever the case may be, it is what it is, and the team needs to find a way to win.
