Catholic BR's top receiver (that had a long TD against STM) is currently a commit to our baseball team

Pretty sure Steve Mocek and Buck Moncla back during the Stokley era were scholarship guys as well.

Small sample size but I don’t think he is much better than Fields with the same tools.

With that said, he makes plays in crucial times.

Maybe we just need the STM coaching staff over the Ascension staff. ;)

Yes we have. We had a Moncla play TE in the late 80’s. Several other guys as well as has been mentioned.

Jerry Babb was definitely not a walk on. He was Coach Bustle’s first signee. Much was made of that.

That is true, Babb was a big deal signee, partially because how rare it was to get players from his high school.

Definitely recommend when Jerry committed, and the signing party. Some of y’all recall those days at the Alumi house, then the convention center, and Moncla indoor facility. Now it’s not nearly as much fun.

I think many are forgetting the TOPS aspect of this discussion. Players may have been “scholarship” level players but a football coach would be dumb to waste a scholarship on someone who has a full ride on tops. Jerry was a great student as well. I don’t know anymore than that but we may have had a lot of stm students that had tops and freed up scholarships for others.

. . . not sure what the academic standard was then, but now a kid with a 32 on his ACT and good grades in high school gets a full ride on the Academic side . . . some get to even pocket some money . . .
