It is a mascot. It is only seen a few times a year at games, and I'd be willing to be that it doesn't scare children. Ohio State understands that a mascot and a logo are not the same. Hence, Ohio State doesn't have brown apparel and merchandise created with an acorn on it. The Houston Rockets have a grey bear named Clutch as a mascot, The Phoenix Suns have a black Gorilla, and The Tennessee Volunteers have a dog, as does the New Orleans Saints. All of those entities understand the difference between logo's and mascots, and understand how to brand themselves. Thus, merchandise is only produced the way they want it produced.
UL, on the other hand, doesn't understand that a mascot and logos are different. They don't understand the importance of branding and how the wrong “brand” can make the President of the United States appear as the Mayor of Butte La Rose and a Large, Accomplished University appear as a Single-A baseball team. Because of the pepper's "colorful" appearance, they've created a problem in which companies produce crap that's outside of UL's traditional color scheme of Vermilion and White. When asked why I saw a yellow and red UL sweater at a Lafayette store about a year ago, UL's Top PR and Marketing Person responded that, in addition to producing merchandise in the school's colors, manufacturers produce “fashion lines” that incorporate the latest fashion colors. She was obviously full of it because I haven’t seen any LSU stuff in anything but P&G&W and I haven’t seen any UT stuff in anything other than O&W. So either UL is really "lucky" in that these manufacturers think so highly of us that they chose to limit these fashion lines to UL, or she knows how bad they’ve messed up UL’s Identity and Brand and was trying to play it off as someone else’s fault. She did try to make me feel better by saying that when the University buys things for giveaways and the like, that they stick with the official university colors of red, white, and BLACK. So, I guess she was trying to say that at least they get it right half of the time (which in itself is an admission that there is a problem and that they’ve lost control of marketing and branding) but since Black really isn’t a University color, I guess “half of the time” is a little too generous.

Count me in on liking the pepper. I think it is a marketing asset for the University. If I was in charge I would take yellow and grey out of the color scheme and run with what we have. On uni's I would go back to a more traditional look. UL on the helmet, Louisiana on the Jersey, and peppers for the "good play" stickers. I would do this because people watching us know the Ragin Cajuns are on the field. What you want is for them to identify UL and Louisiana as our name.

Count my wife in she likes your living walking pin headed dildo mascot.

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
Let me clarify. I like the pepper, not that horrible, pathetic, scary abomination that is our mascot.

Maybe you need to be more sensitive to her needs.

He is right. The pepper mascot is rediculous. The ONLY place for the pepper is the accent on Ragin. We need a real mascot to go along with Ragin Cajuns. That should be either (a) bullgator, (b) catahoULa (state dog)or (c) pelican (state bird). Remember, we are The University of Louisiana. Let's have a mascot reflective of our university. We need to revise our color scheme and logo and go back to red and white. Once this is done, we need to remarket ourselves with our new logo, new mascot, new color scheme and ONLY with UL and Louisiana. Then, license new gear by the university and watch sales soar.

I think we should go back to the bulldog personally. i don't think the pepper is the best mascot but it isn't the worst either.
I mean I understand the pelican b/c it is the state bird, but how scary / intimidating is that? You think people make fun of the Pepper but won't make fun of a pelican?

What's scarier than an Allligator? Florida doesn't have too many problems with that. Or, what about a Longhorn or a Buffalo? How is a Pelican scary but not these other greatly recognized and loved mascots? It is all in how it is marketed, something obviously foreign to UL.

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
I could live with an Alligator I guess. How would you make it / cloth it so that it is associated with THE University of Louisiana without looking corny or stupid?

We had a thread a few months ago about mascots. Someone had a great bullgator mascot, cartoon character, named Fideaux, if I remember correctly. Given that we have bullgators in the swamp on campus, that mascot appeared a good fit for UL. Could whoever posted that before do so again? It would be real easy to make that into a costume worn on the sidelines.

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
When I was finishing at USL in 1995 they had decided to go with a bulldog named ragin cajun as the mascot. Seemed like a good idea, tied into the old nickname, while keeping our cooler than cool current nickname. I left the state for several years and didn't do a very good job of keeping up with the goings on here. When I got back in 2003 the bulldog was gone. What happened? It's definitely better than the walking tampon.
I'm sure this has been hashed over here, but I just didn't know the story....

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
UL has 24-7 BullGator representation on campus with the world’s most valuable campus mascot habitat. Priceless.
Now then, the pepper is both a homerun and a dismal failure. It looks great embroidered and in print but simply does not translate well into or onto any other venue real or pretend or as mental imagery.

i found the thread and here is one of the pictures....which I vote for. If you can get a costume made that looks this fierce I'm in.
I agree that the pepper looks good embroided and in print, so I also vote for keeping it as the "comma to the top" at the end of RAGIN.

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
The secret to a great mascot with personality is the beak or snout or choppers.
If it is pronounced when it turns or just looks in a different direction it conveys action and personality.
This is part of the failure of pepper design, the person inside is at a real disadvantage to express personality. If you can’t do that you will never serve the purpose of getting the crowd into the game.

That is it and it is nice looking. I would put a UL on the state "L" and on the back have his name, whatever it would be called. We could have a name contest, starting with Fideaux.

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
We need the guy that did the video on finding the store in Cameron Parish to be CAJUN MAN he could stir up some stuff pre game with his old hat and white Cajun Rebock boots and shotgun!!!!

Re: The Spice is wrong!!!
Why are we missing the boat.... gator is ok and there's really nothing wrong with it except we would share a mascot with Florida all while not actually being the gators....... Identity??????? We are the ragin cajuns and our colors are red(vermillion) and white. What's red(vermillion)? Crawfish(boiled). What is the Lafayette and Acadiana area known for? Peppers, I mean CRAWFISH!!!!! It's not rocket science. It's so freakin painfully obvious, that we're affraid to do it.
It would be a cool costume also. But the mascot would have to belly crawl always!!!!!!
