Actually, San Marcos is a college town (lots of fun) and not a major city like San Antonio (not a lot to do and some BIG GIRLS) or Austin (traffic is horrible and $$$$). Anyone from the area will tell you that there is a lot of people who live in the hill country areas ( San Marcos, New Braunfels, Gruene, etc.) and work in San Antonio or Austin. So when you say "between where you really want to be" then you don't know the area enough to make an intelligent comment....

I like the New Braunfels/Gruene area. We've made a weekend trip to camp and tube on the Guadalupe river for the past few summers.

I second that. San Marcos is a fun town. The Gruene Music hall is pretty sweet… Ziggy Marley either recently played there, or will soon… I know A&M is in the SEC and all, but I'd much rather be in San Marcos then Bryan/College Station...

Been to Gruene Hall a few times. Saw Willie Nelson and Ryan Bignham there last year it was crazy...tiny crowded place, but fun. Still bummed this game is on a Tuesday night..could have been a great weekend in hill country
Re: Louisiana vs Texas State
But, do not bring your wives or girlfriends with you to San Marcos. They have the biggest outlet mall I've EVER seen. If mama comes with you, leave the credit card at home.
If you're into different cuisine, check out New Braunfels. Heavy German influence and several really good German restaurants.
